I think it's a convenience of location...

probably 'cause the merchant rates for CCs in Canada are amongst the highest in the world (http://www.thestar.com/business/article/1174904--credit-card-issuers-set-up-perverse-system-competition-bureau-says). with the razor thin margins on items at convenience stores it just isn't worth the aggravation. i can totally understand.

I get what you say.
But convenience stores can't afford the CC transaction charges. It cost anywhere from $3000+ each month for them.
And Cash is king. Other side effects is no HSt goes to government in many cases, underhand/illegal transactions/income.

Its their convenience and not yours.

I am similarly outraged at Toblerone chocolates. Triangular shaped chocolate might cut the inside of my mouth. If they didn't want a lawsuit from me, then do not make your chocolate in a deadly triangular shape!

If you want me to eat this for breakfast, please make it slightly less abrasive than your average cheese grater.

You'd be surprised if you knew how much some convenience stores don't claim in sales. I posted a while back on the many ways these shops can make the register appear like it's ringing in a sale, but in reality it isn't. Like giving you a sub total, but then hitting cancel, so it doesn't show up on the daily sales. Or pressing the paper up button so it sounds like it's printing the sale to the daily records... And even having the key in the register and turning the key to make it appear like the register open after the transaction.

I've personally know store owners in the past who said they didn't claim upwards of 80% of their sales. BTW, I'm the son of former convenience store owners.

I can totally believe that.
Sometimes looking at these old registers makes me thing they're not registers at all and just some arbitrary makeshift mechanisms constructed in a basic "mechanics 101" course to make some noise.

+1 Even if they could afford CC transaction charges in a given time, those charges are open to increases. Wasn't there some hullabaloo recently about CC companies increasing fees and businesses throwing a stint? Or it might've been a story (-ies) about businesses souring to accepting credit cards because transaction fees vary with the card, and having someone come in with a card that has a high fee attached to it was unappealing (to say the least).

Convenience stores have a lot of transactions for very few items - a chocolate bar, a pack of cigarettes, a can of chips and a bag of pop, etc. If a convenience store of that nature accepted credit cards, they'd would be spending more money on each credit card transaction than what it is worth it to them.

Maybe if they had high volume sales or sell things in a wide price range - like a convenience store attached to a gas station, all at a well-visited location - it would be worth it to them. Then they could just bite the difference because the large volume of sales and/or net profits far outweigh the work and money associated with CCs.

But a basic convenience store that doesn't do anywhere near that volume of sales? Not worth the trouble. The money and stress you save by not accepting CCs outweighs, clearly to some owners, the "money" you get from people who use their CCs at a store because they can.

It is true! Convenience Stores should not call them convenient. None of them are next to my house and neither are they opened 24 hours!
