we live in a nice condo in brampton. when we moved in here things were great, friendly neighbours, quiet, you wouldnt even know people lived on the other side of the walls.

in the past 5 months 2 families have moved in on either side of us. both are same ethnicity (will not name), and their cooking is driving us absolutely nuts.

it always starts when we get home from work, me after 6, my wife at 630. its gotten so bad that, if you took the stairs, you could start smelling it from 2 floors down. the thing is they have big families, i think one of them is about 8 or so family members in a 3 bedroom, and so they cook a lot.

im hesitant to complain to the building manager since they are also same ethnicity and i dont want to seem racist. what do i do? we have trouble sleeping at night bc the smell is so powerful

Common problem nothing you (or the building manager) can do - the smell will be pervasive, better get used to it or move away.

Yeah I hear you.

But if they're courteous, clean and don't make noise, then consider yourself lucky.

I've ridden my bike down some streets in the past and the whole street smells. Can't imagine what that would be like confined to a condo building.

No point stressing about this 'cuz nothing you can do.
Instead, join the party. Tell them you love the smell and ask what it is. Maybe they'll make you some and soon you'll be getting a free meal once a week!

Indian cooking is notorious for this.

I'm pretty sure my neighbours can smell our cooking at all times of the day, lmao.

8 families in a 3 bedroom + Brampton + Strong cooking? I think we know the race.

It's not racist to not like someone's cooking. Unfortunately buildings subject to this specific type of cooking will smell forever.

Sidenote, when house shopping with my friends we ran into several houses own by people cooking this type of ethnic food. We couldn't stand the smell, it soaks into the house you can't even get rid of it. Unfortunately it limits the type of people who would purchase their house, because only people from the same ethnicity would want to live with that smell.

It's not racist but there's nothing you can do to stop people from cooking food.

Bonus story, A Realtor friend had a client who told an Indian family that she doesn't want to rent to them because she doesn't want the unit to smell. She got sued haha. She deserved it for being so stupid. However,it's understandable since once you get the smell you will never get rid of it. It would be hard to rent to other people...

As others have said nothing you can do to stop them from cooking. Consider sealing your unit tight as possible like weather strip the doors and windows. Maybe you can burn incense.

seal them doors n windows.

I can tell you that this smell kills me literally, and I can't stand it! For me there are no words to describe it lol. I lived with room mates from the same ethnicity, and after continuous efforts, they stopped making food with that smell lol

Actually some condos do have cooking smell by-laws. My condo is fairly strict. If your cooking is going to smell, your front door must be closed, vents on until smell is gone and windows open (weather permitting).

The Indian family beside me was evicted. It was rumored that their cooking was the reason (they used to leave their front door wide open). But I suspect that it was the multitude of other condo laws they broke. They let their kids use the hallway as a play area (toys scattered everywhere), left their trash bags outside their door when the garbage shoot was not available, hung laundry on their balcony, tossed water over the balcony, etc.

I was forced to seal my front door on my unit with industrial sealing tape and it worked great. It also doubles as a great noise filter.

In time, you'll find that the cooking smell is the least of your problems with your specific neighbours. If I'm wrong then consider yourself lucky.

Those reasons don't sound bad enough to me to get a tenant evicted

Building management might limit the number of people living in a condo based on the number of rooms inside. I dont know if 8 people living in a 3 bedroom would break condo rules. But you can explore that avenue provided you understand your life will be more hellish if they retaliate against you later on.

Your best bet is to have a talk with them with a suggest to put duct tape around the door to keep the smells in. You will have to do the same to your own unit.

find alls resident sin the building who you think could be bothered by the smell and collectively make a complaint with the manager

Also dont be a wuss. Who cares if the building manager is the same race? If enough people complain then they have to do something about it. Alternative is get the hell out of Brampton.

No need to read after that. And I did not read " dont want to seem racist. what do i do?"
It is tough one. Moving is going to be expensive or even house. But that is the only solution.

And this too. I stopped going out with my friends because their smoking smell I carried home.
Like NDP I hate smokers.
