20 bucks (same price as US) is awesome for an os upgrade, use the reduced itunes cards and it's even cheaper.

Anyone install the upgrade, i never upgraded apple os before, does it wipeout the HD like an iphone upgrade, anyone know?

As far as I know I just ran it as an upgrade and there was 1 software update.. Not very different from OS X Lion, notification center is nice and it's nice to have the reminders and notes integrated. I find the dictation software pretty useless though...

So your pics and movies remained on the hard drive after the upgrade?

Did an in-place upgrade, no problem. Everything was still there.

Yes because last OS upgrade was 29.99 and now it's 19.99, that's pretty good for a full OS release.

That can be said on pretty much on any software, right.

So a .1 release qualifies as a full OS release these days? All it adds is a few features. Many of which are not even welcomed by most reviewers, even at $20.

Regardless, this is the full, regular price of this version. Thus, this is not a hot deal, it is the regular price.

Perhaps i should have quotes apple "major release" and not "full release" for those who want to be technical: "Apple today announced that OS X Mountain Lion, the ninth major release of the world’s most advanced desktop operating system, will be available in July. It's attached to your apple ID so as long as your other Mac is setup with your Apple ID you should be good to go. Just check your downloads, it should be in there.

If the other computer is not with your Apple ID, "lifehacker" suggests to create a new admin user, log in your Apple ID, install software, delete the newly created admin user.

Try? Log in with your apple id and install it on the other machine.

So uh, full regular retail price is considered a hot deal now?

It started when the pre-order/release of Android tablets started popping up in hot deals. No sale or discount just plain old MSRP and massive threads would be created. It seems the mods thought it was OK to keep them here and not move them to the Computer and Electronics forum where they belong.

please move this to "computers and electronics" section. Not a hot deal at all. As a Macbook owner, I am not even sure if it's worth the $20 looking at the new feature list.

If you think so, then don't waste time by posting in this thread and ask the mods to move the thread instead.

Back on topic...I guess it's a good time to look for those 20% discounted iTunes gift cards.

It didn't start with the Android Tablets (Nexus 7 tablets, which were an actual 'hot' deal, even at regular price), it has always been happening every time any Apple product launches, is announced, etc.

Maybe more like 3 features and 197 'tweaks'. I don't see any actual features in the list below. ;)

Leave it to Apple to charge for service packs.

Apple's OS version numbering is different from that of Windows. Consider Windows 7 and Windows 8. Apple just puts a "10." in front of the OS version number. Lion was 10.7, Mountain Lion is 10.8

Apple's equivalent to Service Packs are sub-versions; the most recent version of 10.7 Lion is 10.7.4, indicating that there have been four free OS patches since the operating system was shipped to customers.

Apple can release the iPhone 2g for $300 today and fanboys will say its a hot deal.

Technically no, since there are newer iPhones out. But you're right...they do usually go for the newest product regardless of the price.

And it's not just apple fanboys...it's like a status symbol thing in some places. http://micgadget.com/16645/iphone-4s-selling-at-crazy-prices-in-hong-kong-thousands-line-up-for-cheaper-iphone-4/

Did the update yesterday, I'm not really sure it's even worth the $20. There doesn't seem to be that many new features and the ones that are there are just bringing it in line with iOS (Notifications, Messages, etc..).

I could have stuck to Lion but I am a sucker for having everything at the latest. Plus knowing Apple Lion will not be left out to the pasture in terms of any new features and updates.

Mountain Lion feels like a service pack, nothing has changed... same old features.

Of the 200 new features, I can't think of any that I actually want or would use on a regular basis. It's a good price but not much point to it. OSX Lion killed my MBP battery life by half! I am afraid what update would do.

Ah Apple, the only company who can successfully quantify an update by measuring "features", most of which aren't actually features...

Lol. Apple is so lame, Windows ftw.. Also 19.99 normal price consider a good deal? Then Windows update would be hot!!!

No it does not happen every time a new Apple product is released. I don't care what you consider is a "hot" deal, it's still MSRP and belongs no where in the Hot Deals forum. It seems that every Android tablet released is a "hot" deal even at MSRP. No need for threads that are hundreds of posts long that just discussing the tablet itself and no actual deal or savings on the MSRP. Those could easily be placed here like this thread has.

Duuuuude
Jul 28th, 2012, 01:20 AM
So the most powerful tablet in the world is only $199 and that's not a hot deal because you say so? And this thread belongs because that one exists? Oh boy....

I've been around here a tad bit longer than you so I think I've seen a few more Apple launches here on RFD than you might have. There are about 9 threads created for every iLaunch by overzealous Apple fans who want to "spread the word". But this one takes the cake for something that doesn't belong in the hot deals forum.

But be sure to let us know when Apple releases a $199 tablet, but we all know it wont be that cheap. ;-)

FYI A deal doesn't have to be discounted to make it a deal.
