Hi all,

So I was at a Rogers Plus store to add data sharing for $12/month to get data on my iPad the other day (Markville Mall). Everything took about 10 minutes to process and activate - and at the end of the deal, he found out that they were giving away a $100 bill credit on activation of data sharing.

I asked him if there was any term commitment to get the $100, and he confirmed with me that there wasn't. I had to sign a service agreement, on which we both confirmed on paper that there was no term. He also said I could cancel at anytime and still retain the $100 credit - just that I needed to give 30 days notice.

Definitely a hot deal, regardless of whether you need it or not. Free money!

For reference: I have a 6GB data plan and a retentions plan. This was done at the Markville Rogers Plus store - but I'm sure it'll be available everywhere else.

Data share between devices for personal use or data sharing between family plans? Thanks!

Instead of paying to share that data, you can make your phone a wifi hotspot, connect to it with your ipad, andorid device, etc and use your own data for free.

Battery life on the phone usually an issue if you use your tablet alot.

Just curious, but if you have an iphone why don't you use it as a hotspot and connect your ipad to it, and save yourself the $144 annual cost for data sharing? This is assuming you have all apple products.

iPhone will create a hotspot so any device can connect. If you are worried about battery life plug in the iPhone to your laptop and tether instead.

Yeah this would be a bit better if your concerned about battery life, hotspot generation sucks alot of energy usually. Data Sharing would conserve power...

and that's why this option is good if the wife wants to take the ipad today and the iphone is not on her...most rfd are intelligent enough to enrol this $12 option if the 2 devices are not together.

btw...doesnt have to be a wife...could be a present for your mom...etc.

I have a $10 data credit on my older 3G 6gb data, afraid to lose it if I switch to LTE share, and add the $12 data share.

Ok, I am planning to get the 16GB new iPad LTE tomorrow at Staples for 10% off and was always planning to get the LTE data sharing for $12/months.
$12 is really a ripoff, they are just making money as its really being shared with your cell phone limit. But hot spot / tethering kills battery life. My fully charged iPhone 4S will shut down after 6 hours with another device connected. So if you need this, its worth it.

martinwales28

Well you can stay tethered to an outlet or pay a small fee for convenience of not spending your day finding AC. My phone will just last all day because i make alot of calls, wifi hotspot kills battery. I hate being in a situation where I cant use my tablet because my battery on my phone is getting low and im going to need it to last the rest of the day. Its all up to the individual, I use my devices for business so the small fee is nothing compared to the convenience it offers.

Here's the official promo?

http://redboard.rogers.com/2012/new-to-rogers-the-6-gb-super-plan/

"Data Sharing with the 6GB Super Plan

As you can see, 6 GB is a lot of data, especially for just one device. So why not use it to also enjoy internet on the go on your tablet, Rocket mobile hotspot, or Rocket stick? Just activate a Shared Device plan for each additional device to get the freedom of a separate SIM card and secure wireless connection. Rogers no-term Shared Device plans are now just $2/month for the first 10 months (regularly $12/month). You can activate up to 4 mobile internet devices to share your smartphone data plan and stay connected when, where, and how you choose."

you, my friend. need to read some more. get yourself updated LOL you can tether from your phones now (well the new data plans- you just have to make sure its the right data plan)

here's the dilemna, its the double drain situation. are we really gonna tie ourselves down to wall outlet and tether? if you tether from your phone and you are using your tablet, you are draining both batteries as we speak. But with with both mobile devices - say tablet and mobile- you can make sure you can use your mobile smartphone later on knowing you have a good portion of battery left on it.

$12 is a lot of money, which i'm sure they raised it from $10 before I believe, but hey, more flexibility with your mobile devices. AND if you really have two mobile devices i.e. tablet and phone, that are both GSM/network ready, why ***** about $12?

I have this.

Here's the simple breakdown.

There's a "6gb Super Plan" and there's a "6gb Super Plan Sharable"; make sure you get the sharable one.

Once you have that you can add the $12/m LTE sharing option ($10 credit a month for 10 months = $2/m). For those confused, this will essentially give you an extra SIM card. You can plug this SIM into any tablet or internet stick. And it's correct that there's no term/contract for this.

Now rogers gave me new iphone 4s

Here is my question
Im using the sg3 as my phone

Will i be able to use /share my data to my old iphone 4s?
The old iphone 4s will act like just an Ipad,
Just to surf the net, and use VONAGE for calling, use i-message for texting

Would that be possible?

As far as I know this personal data share can only shared between smart phone and tablet/rocket stick. Otherwise, what's the point in paying a much higher amount for a family data share plan if you can share data between two smart phones this way?
I inquired about this last year with your question and they told me no but maybe they changed it now. Worse case, you can ask a Rogers rep.

The share plan basically gives you an extra SIM card that only has a (shared) data plan. That's why the rep said it wouldn't work with another smartphone.

But if all you want is data and don't care about voice/text then it would work fine in another smartphone.

Instead of paying to share that data, you can make your phone a wifi hotspot, connect to it with your ipad, andorid device, etc and use your own data for free.

.. because my iPad will be separated from the iPhone with data probably 70% of the time?

Just curious, but if you have an iphone why don't you use it as a hotspot and connect your ipad to it, and save yourself the $144 annual cost for data sharing? This is assuming you have all apple products.

You could do that, but it's a hassle to start up tethering every time you want data access and also a power drain. That, and you won't get push updates when the iPad isn't in use.

.. but the real reason is because my brother has the 6GB plan, and I don't on my iPhone. I didn't want to pay for the 6GB on my own iPhone (nor my iPad) - so it was much cheaper for him to share his data with me instead. I am almost always separate from him location-wise. Why this is hot, is because you can now share data with your friends and family instead of paying for data plans separately (assuming your friends are trustworthy of course).

do you have credits on your data?

I have a $10 data credit on my older 3G 6gb data, afraid to lose it if I switch to LTE share, and add the $12 data share.

Yep. I have the same data credit. Everything was fine after the data share addition.

its $12/month but you get $10 credit each month for first 8 months. so basically $2/month for first 8 months.

i agree $12 is probably not worth it, but now only $2 a month, I am definitely in this. most likely cancel after 8 months though

It's because you are activating a new line (new SIM with a new number) and they always do the papers when that happens. The agreement does force you to give them 30 days notice should you want to cancel though.

The $12 is a "convenience" fee.. personally I don't think it's fair to charge for data you've already paid for..

I tether regularly and can say that it sucks. You have to spend a few extra minutes setting up your phone (sometimes it doesn't always instantly connect in busy wi-fi areas) and it burns your battery like crazy (~15%/hour). People (like me) don't always have their phones charged 100% before the start of a long commute. The convenience of having an "always connected" iPad with proper push/email and instant connectivity when you need it (and on LTE, too!) is very nice, but it's definitely very hard to justify an extra $100+ on the cellular-ready tablet models and $12 every month.. $2/month is a steal though!

That is incorrect as this deal stipulates that a customer bring their own device and receive no discounted hardware. The deal is available in store only this is why care reps are unaware/misinformed.

As mentioned you can tether through Wi-Fi Hotspot. However, you can also tether through bluetooth. Got it to work on my ancient iPhone 3G and Nexus 7 tablet. Bluetooth tether consumes less power for both master and the slave device. Bluetooth PANs are secure as a WPA2 without the need for passphrases. I don't see the value of paying $12/month vs the carrying extra battery packs or extended battery chargers and tethering.

Yeah, would rogers do any IMEI checks and then screw you because it isn't a tablet?

Hey $2 so I don't have to waste battery on my phone is worth it, not like I spend the $2 a month on anything else that's useful. I waste more money pressing the gas pedal on the STI going to the GO station.

So anyone who has REAL info, please tell me if this deal is valid in store only?

If you NEED a sim and/or wants the actual paperwork walk in. If you HAVE a sim and/or don't care about the paperwork call in.

I don't want to pay for the SIM, I need one for each of my accounts. If I go in and just get the datashare enabled, can I call in to get the credit, it seems like Rogers reps are so out of the loop on this when the company advertises this....

So is this deal still in effect?

My dad wants data on his iPad and he'd be sharing 6GB with my iPhone plan. We are barely ever in the same place so being able to access 3G while distanced would be a big help. Is the 10$/month credit still going on? and would reps know about this

Yes the discount is still active, I just setup an iPAD through my 6GB plan.

You can definitely get the SIM card credited, depends on the rep you get though. I activated in store, and h said for activations they give you the SIM card free, even if a sim is activated for data sharing purposes.

can you get credit per phone by calling Rogers or it needs to be in stores ?

Becareful, if you have an older 6GB plan it won't be shareable (god knows why) so they will be forced to change to the shareable one, which WILL drop your credits associated with it. Pain in the ***** to put it back on and more trouble.

Weren't all the data plans somewhat swapped over to 6GB LTE? Or are you saying that that is incompatible with the deal

this isn't new... back when the Promenade Mall had that Black Friday deal, i added my iPad to my plan for the same deal... the credits come at over a period of time so that you can't cancel it within that period. I didn't share the deal because I didn't realize there was an appetite for this... and the whole sharing idea can be confusing (as mentioned above, only on eligible plans)

if you squeeze the rep there a bit, you might get an extra $50 credit (which I did - and would mean $150 credits for 12 months x 12 = $144)
But now that i say that, maybe the rep got me lol... PM me if you want more info and goodluck!

This is very true. Not all credits get dropped, but some certainly could. Make sure you have the rep make note on the account about credits and always take a reference number

Right ON! I was in a PLUS store this afternoon and guy there was so nice to help me. He wasn't going to charge my sim card. When he about to confirm my order on SALES CENTRAL he was not able to do so as my 6GB plan was NOT a share one. He did not force or suggest me to switch. He realized it was a grandfather plan and not recommended me to change though.

Too bad... can't do it anyway.

Which Black Friday deal are you talking about? This thread was started back in the Spring/Summer of 2012...

I just added 2 tablets to my 6GB Super Plan. At a net cost of $2 per month, it's a no-brainer for the first 10 months. After 10 months, I'll call Customer Relations and see what happens. I was using Virgin's flexdata previously. If I sneezed too hard, I was paying $15 per month for 250 MB. So this is a great deal.

So apparently corporate plans aren't eligible for this data sharing plan...

Anyone else have issues doing it with corporate data plans or was I just getting the run around ?

I thought it was $2/device. How did you get 2 devices for $2/month?

It definitely was eligible on corporate plans. I was offered that option 2 months ago, but it may have changed. I'd try in store, or calling again.

I have a corporate plan and was able to set it up without issues. As mentioned before, you just need to have a Shareable Data Plan.

it all depends on the rep you get, some are clueless on promos, others know all the promos

also with this promo, your supposed to get it ONLY if you buy a no TERM tablet from rogers, which makes sense as why would it be so cheap to use LTE speeds on a tablet?

Keep in mind, if you still prefer to tether, just get a juice pack/battery pack for your iPhone - that's what I do to keep it going.

FYI, anyone else using the datashare on a Corporate voice plan? I called in to activate LTE on the iPAD and was told I am not eligible for the $10/month discount because I am on a corporate voice plan (+ 6GB data).

I am. But it was several months ago. Did it in rogers store and the rep is very helpful. They converted my 6g plan to a shareable plan firstly then everything is fine. I am using it on an iPad mini lte now.

Does it say that anywhere on the website? Because when I called and did this they tried to tell me it didn't apply to me because I needed to activate the iPad AND a phone at the same time. I then quoted the website and read the fine print, and nowhere did it say that, which I told him. He then put me on hold for a few minutes, and said that the credit was applied to my account.

I just saw this thread. I'm currently using a corporate plan and have my 6gb data plan shared with my ipad that my dad uses. I actually activated this over a year ago and am only paying $10 a month. At first they didn't approve it but i argued and told them that you guys approved it for one of my friends and his plan is the same corporate plan as mine. They dug up the file and checked that it is allowed so then they proceeded with my request. I've been paying $10 a month extra on my existing plan for about 14 months now and no extra hidden charge.

Hi, Is it possible to share a tablet data plan (500MB for $20) with another tablet? Robbbers told me data sharing is only allowed on smartphone plans (voice + data), my plan doesn't have voice.
