I have a friend that is looking to buy a used car. She has a MAX budget of $9000

She has read the 'buying a used car' thread and all that, so she's aware.

Can someone reccomend what the best car she can get for $9000 or less?

-input on the amount of KM she's looking at the car for $9000 budget
-brand of the car
-good sites she can use for used cars
-maybe even private sellers

I think she mentioned she would head the japanese or german direction.

Thanks,

How much driving will there be? City? Highway? Fuel economy important? Cargo space important?

Does she wear one of these on a frequent basis?

It's a well known one.

Other places include Kijiji, Craigslist, Carpages, I think even Toronto Star has one.

Really hard to recommend a car without knowing what she needs it for. All we've been told is $9k and for all we know she could be looking for a pickup truck or sports car.

Is it for herself only or does she have a family? Why is she replacing her current car? What will it be used for? Does she need a certain # of seats or cargo capacity?

Shes' 22, needs to car to get around from A-B. she doenst want to get a car that will crap out in a few years. She needs a reliable and a fuel efficient car.

she'll drive on the highway most of the time and if she's not on the highway, she's in DT Toronto.

Number of seats: 2 atleast :D

Don't think a sports car is fuel efficient.

maybe a sedan or a hatchback. just not sure which brand to look at for her.

Obviously the OP wants us to go to autotrader and just start linking to everything in the $9k price range.

I'm in the same boat as the OP's friend so I'll hi-jack the thread a bit. So I'm also looking for a used car. I'm looking to spend up to 14k at most, ideally 10-12k. I will be driving to work for 3 months (35km one way) and then it will be a weekend car when I go back to school (in January). The car is for me.I want something cool/sporty if its around 12-14k OR something to get me from A to B that's reliable and under 6k ideally. I don't want a car that has 14L/100km and cargo space isn't important. Any sugestions? I've looked at Rabbits, Jettas, Civics, RX-8s, Accents, Lancers. Any other suggestions and/or comments on the cars I've looked at? Also I live in Montreal where insurance isn't bad (85$/month for a Rabbit and I'm 20 years old) and there's lots of snow in the winter as you fellow Canadians must know :P

Edit: I drive my dad's Camry and I don't like it, it's too big and I won't be able to drive it to my job so I need to get my own set of wheels ( public transit is not an option, it would take me 2hrs to get there)

This is the toughest type of request there is "just get me something for $X that is reliable, I'm just looking for a deal". Reality is that a car is the biggest personification of oneself and you will be driving it for a while so you may as well try to narrow down the style / model you like, then look at the age and mileage range that will fit your budget. Look at AutoTrader for everything within your budget, see what kind of cars are out there, if you like the look, make and model, then add it to your list. Lots of sites out there that provide safety recommendations and stats (mileage, cargo space, etc). Look at each car on the list so filter out the ones that raise concerns. Then prioritize remaining ones on the list to what you like best, second best, etc. If you can't find your plan A, then go to plan B, etc. If you don't follow such a methology, you can drive yourself crazy looking and getting tons of opinions.

There is quite a variety of selection for $9000, sticking with only Japanese and German:

- Acura RSX, year 2004 - 2005 or so or older with 120-130k+ km mileage
- Honda Civic/Toyota Corolla, year 2006 - 2007 or so or older with 80-90k+ km mileage
- Volkswagen Jetta, Golf
- Year 2002 or older BMW 320i/323i/325i/328i with 100k+ km milage, depending on the trim. The 325i/328i will probably have 150 - 180k at that price range
- An old Audi A4
- Toyota Solara

And some others...

It's better to narrow down your choices since the list can become quite long.

Oh, didn't see this when I first posted the above...

In that case just look for an old Toyota/Honda/Volkswagen that she likes then. An old Civic/Accord, Corolla/Camry, or Golf/Jetta should suffice.

Does she wear one of these on a frequent basis?

Function wise, I dont see the visor thing as too much of a problem. I forgot my sunglasses once, so I tried one of these. Its effect is actually quite nice, not only filtering out light into your eyes, but also light onto your face. The only problem is, people cant really see your face through the visor, so you look like an Astronaut with half a visor.....IMO, the merits of the hat outweights the styling disadvantages, so I am ok with it lol

Re: topic

Most likely you may want to check 2002 - 2008 Corollas, Civics, Sentra/Tiida(Versa here), Mazda 3 (note: watch out for rust), Ford Focus, VW Golf/Jetta Mk4 or Golf City/Jetta City (same car, refreshed interior/exterior)......
