Synchronized diving is stupid. What's the point? If adding more ppl doing the same thing is so amazing, why stop at 2? Why not 6 synchronized divers? Or more?
Same with track and field...50m, 100m etc who cares? It's the same thing, same athletes.

Is it just me, or are the swimmers built a little differently than 5-10 yrs ago? When I saw them on the weekend, they seemed to be a little less bulky in the chest/shoulders than the past, and maybe less cut, but overall taller and lankier looking?
the girls didnt look very cut at all...some of their arms seemed to have very little tone more than an average girls.
are they working out differently, or maybe less drug use than the past?

I think, at least in the case of the women (I have watched maybe five total minutes of the Olympics and that five minutes was swimming), those Speedo suits are so tight that they compress the body in funny ways and cause the remaining flesh to spill out, so they look bigger in the shoulders but have tiny waists/legs. I could be wrong though.

Everyone is famous for trying to skirt around the rules. Canada had Ben Johnson, I am sure people in the inner circle new he was doping and just looked the other way. Marion Jones in the US a few Olympics ago, who was never actually caught and she was the most tested athlete in the world at the time. She just had to admit it to the Senate or congress because they found evidence she was using. - I think her husband was caught too for weightlifting, but I could be wrong.
People on the substances are ahead of people testing, they are now keeping the tests for what 8 years or something so they can retest once methods improve.
I don't think this has anything to do with jealousy, we live in a new world if you shatter records as an unknown and aren't doing it on the normal improvement curve (not sure what this is but they were talking about it on CTV last night), you are going to be questioned by the public. This girl apparently just jumped to levels never seen in humans. before.

Again, she did the test and nothing came out negative.
You do live in your small imaginative world, everything can happen in last 50 meters, according to her, she thought she was the last one swimming and that's why she speed up in the last 50 and only realize she won when it's over. Her swimming in semi-final 200 meters also another proof that she is an excellent swimmer.
How do you know which country I love? I am talking about speaking truth with evidence not using malicious speech to hurt an athlete who's working so hard for the Olympics.

well.. the truth remains... she shaved 5 seconds from the last official swim record in short amount of time. She is currently swimming faster than best male swimmer in the world. And Chinese doping record speaks for itself.
I'm not saying she's guilty. it's just 'incredible' swim. For a game where millisecond gain is unbelievable, I can see why there are 'whispers'.

Regardless, it's just not classy in sports to openly suggest that someone is cheating. If you have suspicions, you keep quiet until you have solid evidence. Otherwise, it sounds like a lot of sour grapes.
BTW, she's 16 years old. It's not surprising that she's going to improve her previous time when she was 15. Another thing, the Chinese doping record is old news, as old as Ben Johnson news. It would equally be classless to bring up Ben Johnson if a Canadian won gold in track and field this year.
PS: Why can't a woman be faster than a man?

name in 1 other sport that a woman is faster than a man. ;), It's not a sexist comment, it's just body built. I'm not talking about her being faster than an 'normal' man, but the best male swimmer in the world?

Except you people forgot she still swam 23 seconds slower overall than Ryan Lochte who was faster than her throughout the first 350m, and still had the strength to almost equal her in the last 50m. Who is faster than who? The one that came in 23 second later is faster? What doping?

Note that Ryan Lochte is not that fast in freestyle. In the Men's 4 x 100m Relay, the US team was in the lead until Lochte's turn. French swimmer, Yannick Agnel, beat Lochte by a full second to give France a gold.

Maybe you should have watched how each of the races went down. Here is a quote for you from the G&M comments regarding this case.
If an American, Canadian or basically anyone from a Western Country did this then it'd be praised yet because someone from China did it suddenly it must mean doping. The bias is pathetic.
If she were doping then why would she wait until the end to make her move while being behind for the other 3 lengths? I am sure someone will say
"to make it seem like she wasn't doping"
yet that is totally backwards because the very act of her making the charge at the end is why these Americans and western media people are wondering. The logical thing for someone doping would be to have just a bit of a lead throughout the race.
I also find it funny people bringing up how she swam a faster final 50 than Lochte. Umm, he was on a world record pace going into his final 50 and then seemed to run out of gas or slow down so it isn't like that is some smoking gun comparison since it isn't like his final 50 was the fastest ever since again, he fell a good bit behind the world record. Plus, his final 100/50 in the 4x100 relay where he blew that lead and was beat by ONE SECOND also showed that he shouldn't be some standard to compare to. Why can't it be this girl just went full bore for the final 50?
Maybe she is doped up yet until that is proven, people should just lay off and give her credit for her win. Again, if she were an American or Canadian the idea of doping wouldn't even be mentioned. Sick of the bias people in this society I live in have against countries like China and Russia where EVERYTHING they do must be bad. Talk about media and western governmental brainwashing for people to have such bias against those countries and their citizens.

That is the most stupid reason ever. By such logic Maple leafs should have won the NHL over and over again. Americans are jealous end of story. The western media would not have opened their mouth if it was an American. This Phelps guy had some special suit last olympics and won medals after medals. No suit this time and he sucks. can't believe i'm gonna comment on this but here's my thoughts for those who care.
1) She's not faster than Lochte. She was 20 seconds slower. It's also a known fact that Lochte swims the last leg of a race like a little girl (ask the french, twice)
2) She wasn't a nobody, her wins date back to 2010
3) I don't know swimming, and i don't pretend to know swimming, but a 400 meter race means that there are 8 laps. if a swimmer can improve their performance by only half a second in a lap, that equates to a 4 second improvement. it's not an impossible scenario
4) Ian Thorpe improved his time by 5-8 seconds when he hit 16 years of age too. Growth spurts happen.
5) Innocent until proven guilty. We are in Canada. That is a core value we should all hold. Until then, congrats to her.

Except you people forgot she still swam 23 seconds slower overall than Ryan Lochte who was faster than her throughout the first 350m, and still had the strength to almost equal her in the last 50m. Who is faster than who? The one that came in 23 second later is faster? What doping?
The reason people "forget" this is because the media was focusing only on the last 50 m of the race to create a story out of nothing, so now there's a whole bunch of morons who suddenly think they are swimming pundits and think she swims faster than one of the fastest men in this olympics. Refreshing to see most people, at least on RFD, are not morons though.

Loose a battle to win the war.
And what the heck if the crowd disapprove. The objective is to win gold, within the rule, even if it means loosing strategically.

Here is an article from a British coach commenting on Chinese swimming team training:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2012/jul/31/chinese-athletes-olympics-train-harder
Although not head coach, I am in the Olympic Village with the Chinese team. I must say, taking aside the performances for a moment, the vast majority of comments on this (and many other sites I am sure) are riddled with inaccuracies and speculation.
I am certainly not aware of any talent ID programme – I am coaching five swimmers on this Olympic team and three of them I selected myself when they were 13 years old. No one "advised" or told me who to select – I just used my experience and "trained eye" to spot the guys I thought would be good.
Chinese athletes train incredibly hard, harder than I can explain in words and as a coach who has placed swimmers on five different Olympic Games teams, I have never seen athletes train like this anywhere in the world.
They have an unrelenting appetite for hard work, can (and will) endure more pain for longer than their western counterparts, will guarantee to turn up for practice every single time and give their all. They are very proud of their country, they are proud to represent
China and have a very team focused mentality.
Let's also not forget that this is their only avenue for income; most do not study and sport offers them a way out or a way up from where they and their families currently live in society. If their swimming fails, they fail and the family loses face.
This is not an attitude shared by athletes in the west, who – generally speaking – come from comfortable homes with average incomes, one or two cars per family and four weeks or more paid holidays per year. Your average Chinese family does not live this way.
I could list countless other differences, but the main point is that these are professional athletes, salaried to train and perform – much in the same way Premier League footballers are paid to perform in England, except they train way harder and way longer than these footballers for far less financial reward.
Many people here are asking me why I have lived in
China for seven years – three simple reasons:
1 Facilities: I have access to both 50m and 25m pools in the same building 24 hours per day seven days per week – there are no NOPs, EOPs, red tape managers, lifeguards, public swim etc getting in the way of my training.
2 Athletes: unlike in the UK (where I worked in both a top university and high performance centre) I am able to select any athlete I wish, coach them how I want to, when I want to for as long as I want to. These athletes give me their total attention, time and effort every day.
3 Funding: my athletes are salaried and receive bonuses for performance; I am salaried and receive bonuses for performance. We all want performance, not mediocrity, not sport for all, but gold medals – and they are not afraid to say this. If I want a foreign training camp, money is available; if I want high-altitude training – money is available; if I want an assistant coach – money is available; if I want some new gadgets or training equipment, guess what? Money is available.
For these, and countless other reasons I am very happy I moved to
China; it is the future both financially and in terms of sporting ambition. I am proud to be British, but for myself as a coach, I want to be in a position where I can maximise my ability and realise my potential in my field of employment.
I hope this brief explanation helps to inform the vast majority of the British public out there, who had no idea such
vast differences existed. A former well‑known colleague of mine once said we need to be out of our comfort zone more often. Well, Chinese athletes do not have a comfort zone; life here is challenging and often uncomfortable and they are now prospering because of it. There will always be "rogue" individuals in many countries who turn to "the dark side" for assistance in training, and many countries have a history of such practices, but people must realise how far these athletes push themselves every day, how much they sacrifice in terms of living away from home, with reduced education opportunities. Simply put, they want it more than everyone else.
Enjoy the rest of the Games and "Jia You".

I watched CTV for about an hour and I only heard one short mention of it proclaiming 'BADMINTON CONTROVERSY' with about 3 seconds of footage, because they were saving it for their nightly news recap.

KAZAKHSTAn = 9th CANADA = 29th position What a laugh! Canada can't compete!
Summer has always been too easy, its not nearly dangerous enough for Canada to care.

simple fix...
1. cancel all Canadian sports programs.
2. focus all the funding for 1 program... say, table tennis or beach volleyball.
3. dominate that and you can guarantee yourself gold in 10-20 years.
heck, works for Kazakhstan.

Uhhh good for China? Man you must really hate Canada judging from your posts. Please move to Kazakhstan or China if you wish to bask in gold glory.
For the gold vs total medal count, read this: http://sports.nationalpost.com/2012/08/03/medals/
According to Canadian TV viewers, Team Canada closed out the Olympics’ first week nestled between New Zealand and Romania in a comfortable 12th place. Check the BBC, the Sydney Morning Herald, the Telegraph or even Google, however, and Canada is in a distant 29th place, just ahead of Colombia.
The reason for the disparity is an obscure medal-tallying metric pioneered by the U.S. and scorned by much of the world: The “total medals” score.
But then again, Olympic medal rankings are all somewhat arbitrary. “The bottom line … is that most countries spin the results to give themselves a boost,” Bruce Kidd, a professor of Kinesiology and Physical Education at the University of Toronto, said Friday.
For the first four Olympiads, the Games followed the Ancient Greek custom of only recognizing the first place competitor; the silver and bronze medals were not introduced until 1912. These “winner take all” origins likely explain why gold medal rankings have long been the standard for Olympics medal tables.
The “total medals” system first garnered international attention — and suspicion — at Beijing. China’s 51 gold medals represented not only the most gold medal victories since 1988, but a stunning end to the United States’ 18-year domination of the category. Even before the closing ceremonies, state television giddily reverberated with news of the Chinese victory.
Team USA, however, returned to find The New York Times and USA Today both proclaiming U.S. supremacy, with 110 total medals to China’s 100. Two years later, the U.S. media used the same math at Vancouver to claim victory over Canada’s record-breaking (for the Winter Games) 14 gold medals.

What is the point of counting population, .3 billion people as you say, when 299,999,471 are not participating and 99.99% of people in both countries having zero realistic chance to be selected for any Olympic sport? Indai has 1 billion people but only 83 are participating in only 13 events.
China has sent over 100 less athletes, 396 to 529 for the USA so therefore China is doing much better. And that's fact not IMHO. You are suppose to go by number of athletes at the games sent by each country rather than count joe public sitting at home reading and rebutting your nonsense.

http://www.examiner.com/article/olympic-beer-throwing-beer-bottle-thrown-at-100m-athletes-seconds-prior-to-race
The beer bottle was hurled from a fan only seconds before the starting pistol was fired and fell close behind Jamaican sprinter Yohan Blake. Seen by fans around the world watching the event of the London Olympics, the bottle was a small distraction, but still a major concern for spectators who were supposed to be behaving themselves.
Police arrested the alleged culprit who was drunk and a court date is expected on Monday. However before the authorities got involved, some athletes got a chance to rough up the spectator. Dutch judo bronze medalist Edith Bosch punched the culprit as she was sitting very close to the moron who allegedly didn’t seem to care about his fate after the bottle was thrown.

I agree that the face she was making was in poor taste, but keep in mind she is only 16 or 17 years old? Also not only was she favoured, but she is the best in the world by a SIGNIFICANT MARGIN. She completely fell on her second vault and still got silver!!! All she had to do was just land on her feet for the second less difficult vault, and it would have been a landslide victory (probably by like 6 tenths!). So for her in this particular event, the silver is more like a participation ribbon.

Canada faces FIFA action over Olympic ref comments
LONDON - FIFA is considering disciplinary action over blistering comments by Canada's coach and players about the referee after their semifinals loss to the United States in the Olympic women's football tournament.
FIFA says its disciplinary panel is "analyzing incidents that occurred after" Canada's 4-3 defeat after extra time on Monday.
Canada forward Christine Sinclair, who scored all three goals, later said "the ref decided the result before the game started."
The Canadians were upset by an indirect free kick awarded against goalkeeper Erin McLeod for holding the ball too long late in normal time.
The resulting passage of play saw the Americans get a penalty which Abby Wambach scored to equalize at 3-3.
Wambach says she counted out loud when McLeod held the ball.

Anyone else find the lack of men's medals for Canada to be a bad thing? That's more concerning than the lack of golds tbh. The reason is cos our women have an advantage (which won't last as other countries develop women's sports programs or become more progressive) but for mens it's a more even playing field and we come up short when that's the case.
Imo I don't really care much about the olympics anymore because I love sports but we don't watch these sports except once in every four yrs. I'd personally prefer we spend our $ and time on international team sport teams like maintaining our hockey team and improving soccer/rugby/cricket/bbal but the lack of mens medals is just something to think about.

I count 9 of our medals coming from men, which is half of our medal count so not sure what you are talking about.

Croatia got more gold than Canada
Ethiopia got more gold than Canada
Silver = Loser #1
Bronze = Loser #2
alternatively maybe there should be more medals
Copper for winner #4
Tin for winner #5

There were a lot of cameras going off during his dive. I'm iffy about it because how are you able to see the cameras when you're going into the pool so fast. The rest of his dives were excellent though.
I'm okay with medal count for Canada but I did feel some of our athletes did let us down...especially the ones for medal contention. All the big names were kind of a disappointment (Whitfield, Despatie). Van Koeverden was alright though I really felt like he could have won a gold medal for Canada.
The trampoline girl was a meh for me...if China didn't have the slip-up we would have gotten silver or bronze.
It's unfortunate our summer olympians weren't able to carry on the success from Vancouver.

Whatdo you think is better, more total medals, or fewer total medals with more golds?
Just wondering, cuz if you look at Canada, we have a pretty good total amount of medals, but almost all of them are bronze, lol...and on the charts I've seen, we're ranked below some other countries like Iran with very few medals, but a handful of golds.

In a way, I don't. Not many of our athletes were expected to win gold....they just aren't considered that dominant in their sports on the world scene. Despatie or Whitfield not winning gold isn't the same as phelps or bolt not winning gold.
So, I kind of think we performed at about par for what we should have expected, and how much money/priority/effort Canada puts into it as a nation.

Who cares, I'm glad it's over. Anyone who can get deep into a boring, corrupt sport like the Olympics, surly needs to analyze what they find important.
Well, I don't care much for it either, but it's on during what seems like one of the worst off-season tv schedules I've ever seen...nothing interesting whatsoever so far this summer, so I've enjoyed it as background noise to working around the house, or while I was on vacation in BC staying in hotels.

Even numbered years are crazy for sports fans. It's either the World Cup along with Winter Olympics, or the European Championships along with the Summer Olympics. For fans, there's a 2 year recuperating period. For athletes, that's another 4 years they'll spend training to be even better.

Toronto could never pull off something like this because you'd have the Rob Fords of the world crying because more than a crisp five bucks was spent on the proceedings.

Nah, itd be just as much of a joke if Miller, Lastman, Hall, Eggleton or Smitherman (haha) were running the show.
Its just out of our league.
Toronto didnt just get small-time the day Ford took office, the same way the US didnt just gret wrecked the day Obama took office.

Well the people that scream about spending ANY money on ANYTHING (lots of them on this board) didn't appear when Ford took office, that's true, but they certainly got a whole lot louder since then when one of their own started running the city. It wasn't so much a comment on Ford as these kinds of folks that seem to understand the cost of everything but the value of nothing, as you intimated in the other thread.

Ford is not running the city. lefties are still running the city

fair enough. I thought your post was just trying to politicize the issue too much, when IMO the problem has much more to do with the mindset of ppl, as well as 50 yrs of poor urban planning and lousy infrastructure design, moreso than whatever douches are in office that show up for ribbon cutting cermonies.

It's a thread about the London Olympics ...so ' why ' is there even any mention of Ford ?
Who gives a rat's behind about Rob Ford...he's irrelevant to the topic of the London Olympics.

Again, I used Ford as an example of the TYPE of person who whines about the cost of this kind of thing, then complains when the five bucks they spent didn't get them a five million dollar return. Vero would be another.

I don´t know exactly, but this Olympic Game was boring from my side. I watched only two sports- cycling and swimming were certainly exciting.

let see which country takes #1 for Paralympics.
Mahatma Ghandi who said, "A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members."
canada sent 149 paralympians with a population of 35million
China has sent 282 paralympians with a population of 1.3billion
interesting.

Obviously, not Canada.

Wow
This is really different from the Olympic Closing Ceremony.
There's actually a proper theme for the Paralympic ceremony (changing of the seasons)
It's steampunk meets Cirque Du Soleil meets flamethrowers with Coldplay/Rhianna/Jay-Z providing the music for the visuals.

Anyone else watch the Paralympic closing ceremony on Sportsnet? Like Madchester said, it had a theme to it, "steampunk meets Cirque Du Soleil meets flamethrowers with Coldplay/Rhianna/Jay-Z" being an almost dead-on description.
There actually wasn't much of Rhianna or Jay-Z. Their involvement seemed almost superfluous, but it was a welcomed break from just Coldplay. Simply put, the closing ceremony was a Coldplay concert on steroids in an alternate universe. How much you would have enjoyed it probably depends a lot on how much you like Coldplay (a band this big always seem to have an equal amount of fans and haters). I couldn't help but think that there was probably a little too much Coldplay (and I like Coldplay, heaven forbid).
Having said that, I enjoyed the ceremony. Paul Romanuk co-hosted the coverage and stated something like that it blew the Olympic closing ceremony out of the water. I have to agree. The "four seasons" theme as it played out wasn't all that comprehensible, but really, do these things ever make much sense? Let's just say that it was wonderfully bizarre.
You can watch the whole thing here (the world feed, not Sportsnet's coverage):
