Price is not reflected online so check your nearby stores! Remember, there are two USB ports so I think this is the right selling point at $13.99 for a decent bar to charge your cell phone, MP3 player, etc. without using an outlet.

For something that regulates power I'd want something approved by UL/CSA. DX isn't going to offer that.

Having said that CT sells a lot of junk merch and the product page doesn't list a brand name so it could be a no name job that fakes certification.

+1 My classmate is an electrical engineer and from what I've heard very few of these small electrical appliances/tools are tested to meet safety requirements and often don't meet those requirements. Why risk burning down your 500k house to save $5-10 dollars? Do people seriously think Canadian Tire actually actually cares about only selling quality products under their brand? ***** no, just look at this (http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/browse/4/Auto/PressureWashersAccessories/PressureWashersElectric/PRDOVR~0398561P/Simoniz+1800+PSI+Electric+Pressure+Washer.jsp?loca le=en) or this (http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/browse/4/Auto/Towing/HitchesTrailerAccessories/PRD~0401102P/Locking+Hitch+Pin.jsp?locale=en#tab_page_reviews_l i) for example.

Guys, before you guys bash, at least do a little research or check it out. The brand of the power bar is NOMA which is made by Wirelinks. Not sure if they are good or not.

If you want it from Dealextreme or monoprice, you're seriously buying no name and the quality reflects that. NOMA does offer a 1 year warranty. Canadian Tire sells 80%-90% NOMA products in their extension cord and power bar aisle if anybody bothered to look before posting. The other 10-20% are even worse brands than NOMA.

To ijustgotadeal, what are those links suppose to present? All I see is a power washer that you've probably never done any research about. If you want to bash CT about selling crappy merch, you can see that almost every retailer will sell crappy stuff so I don't see the point you're trying to make.

This thread is full of speculation who have zero evidence of calling it a crappy power bar where they have a. no idea what they are talking about because they don't even know the brand of it, and b. no first hand experience using it. Kids these days...

I also purchased this surge protector from CT over a year ago on sale but a bit cheaper then.
In white & "Noma" branded with the exact same code 052-2460-8 on box.
Works OK

The usb slots are very fitted so that standard usb cables with metal male endings will fit;
I have some ipod cables without usb metal male fittings
& any extra width on plastic housing with the usb connectors then it will not fit into slots.
The usb charging light seems to flicker a bit when charging my ipod.

Gotta keep something in mind, most people don't use these things with protection from power surges in mind, they really just use them to plug in more things. Sure maybe someone told them it's good for your computer, but they are not gonna go looking at brands, stats, and spend like $50 on one when the local stores has some for $15.

For those talking about fire risk, are you really worried about that? I have personally never seen a power bar, surge protector, or anything like this ever come anywhere close to causing a fire. I've seen some that stopped working, and that's it. Remember, millions of households have such cheap crappy surge protectors in their homes, whether it's from CT, Walmart, anywhere. As I said above, average person probably goes to such stores and buys the cheapest one that has the number of outlets they need.

Personally, while I might not trust a cheap NOMA product to offer great protection for my devices, I have no fear of it burning the house down. Oh, I should mention though that I live in Windsor and houses average probably under $200k here rather than the $500k someone else eluded to, so maybe that's why I don't care :).

Technically one could try to get support from their ?possible? parent company, UPM Marketing, but it seems unlikely. For example, they state on their website

DEFECTIVE PRODUCTS:
If your product is defective please return it with proof of purchase to your local retailer.

Furthermore, their BBB page (http://www.bbb.org/kitchener/business-reviews/home-automation/upm-marketing-in-markham-on-1218397) suggests they don't respond to customer complaints(they haven't responded to 5/7).

Lastly, here is what others say:

I'm trying to reach UPM's customer service: 1-888-468-6876, but talking to some minimum wage earner in India who has a very thick accent isn't going to be fun.

On the NOMA UK website

Please note: we cannot assist with international enquiries (from North America, Europe etc.). We have no connection with companies of the same or similar name in North or South America.

Enquiries of any kind relating to Noma in Canada should be addressed to the Canadian Tire Corporation who is the Noma licensee for Canada except for items such as power blocks and leads, timers, Moonrays garden lighting; enquires about these items should be made to Woods Industries of Scarborough, Ont.

Noma Lites Ltd of the UK do not supply goods to any companies in USA or Canada, nor can we deal with orders, complaints or queries. Please see above for contact details.

The 'Woods Industries' company which was at www.woods.com now redirects to http://www.colemancable.com and colemancable doesn't list NOMA under their brands (http://www.colemancable.com/products/brands/)

Tough to tell who actually owns the NOMA brand but it would be safe to assume that Canadian Tire owns it because they advertise NOMA as being exclusive to Canadian Tire.

http://s7d5.scene7.com/is/image/CanadianTire/hmmb_Noma342_en?wid=795&hei=160&qlt=85&resMode=sharp2

Basically from what I can tell. NOMA was a reputable brand but the North American operations went under, according to Wikipedia, "But by the early 1960s, the company faced increasing competition from cheaper, imported light sets, and it filed for bankruptcy in 1965". Fast forward, Canadian Tire now owns the brand licensing in Canada and that is probably all they own of NOMA. Canadian Tire basically runs the brand as a store brand but as a separate shell. They source the products from various companies: UPM Marketing, Woods, etc which in turn source their products from China. Products that should cost dollar store prices are heavily marked up with a 'fake' brand name. The quality of the products are so bad that NOMA operations separate from NOMA in the western world have had to post notices saying they aren't affiliated with the junk. No company seems to want to take responsibility for the junk and Canadian Tire is just hoping that consumers will just go out and buy a replacement. Ultimately, suckers will still buy NOMA products because frankly, who researches before buying a surge protector? And even if one was to research beforehand, a new model will come out and Canadian Tire will remove the old model's listing which includes the reviews.

The only problem with that unit you linked is it doesn't say the output voltage to the usb. If its anything less than 1amp then its basically useless as it will take hours to charge just your phone.
I bought one of these Noma powerbars yesterday and have it all hooked up. So far I don't really have any issues. I have 5 devices connected to it, and I have charged my phone with it as well.
Overall, I'm happy with it so far. If it dies I'll just toss it. For $14 i'm not gonna complain or expect too much out of it.

Thank you!

APC is a reputable power supply company.

NOMA is not. And there really is no such things as a "Canadian Tire warranty." You buy it, it's yours. It's at the discretion of the manager if you get a refund once you walk out of the store. Some are good. Some aren't. But if anything goes wrong with a NOMA product, you are (literally) toast.
