Without the free lifetime maps, most if not all Garmin GPS get at least one free map update (within a specified time period after one turns on the unit in vicinity of the satellites...that is what happened with my Garmin 1350). This is an older unit.

IMO, one is better off with a newer Garmin model (refurbished) that has lifetime maps...for $20-$30 more. Check for the frequent sales at Visions.ca
