View Full Version : People using elevator to go just one floor

Doesn't this piss you off? I always see this at work. People take elevator from ground floor to floor 2. There is a stair case right next to the elevator. You shouldn't use elevator unless you are going at least to floor 4. It really annoys me when I get on the elevator on groudn floor and someone else gets on the elevator and then they press 2 and then I have to wait for it to stop on floor 2. It also annoys me greatly when I'm going down to the ground floor, and the elevator stop on floor 2 to pick up some lazy person who can't walk the stairs down one floor. It's different if you're disabled or carrying something heavy but all these people using the elevator for 1 floor are just lazy and should get more exercise. I notice women are much more likely to do this than men, I guess females are lazier. I'm wondering if I should start saying something when people do this, like if someone gets on and press 2 I'll turn to another person and sigh loudly and say something like geez lazy people can't even take stairs for 1 floor.

This happens to me very often, its perfectly alright for disabled people or if they have mobility issues but the ones that can walk and take it for one floor are the worst. There are many ways to deal with these people such as blocking the door and not moving. There are other ways as well

If you look at the shoes some women wear - lets just say they would not be safe on the stairs.

How can you block them preemptively before they've pressed the floor button?

Yes. I couldn't understand why until I saw the shoes.

I think some women may also choose not to take the stairs if they are wearing a long dress/skirt. I recall the wife telling me that a couple guys at work had bugged her for taking the elevator one day (she usually takes the stairs). The reason? Fear of tripping.

I used to live in a condo where if you kept pressing the "close" button repeatedly on the inside, the elevator would not stop at other floors called from the outside. It would slow down but the doors would never open. Of course once people figured this out it took even longer for an elevator to come.

They might have just used the stairs to go up and down a lot, and now they are tired and want to take the elevator.

I saw this lady who weighed about 300lbs, get on an elevator with me, holding a 6 pack of "diet coke" and take the elevator up what is literally half a floor. She was wearing an under armour t-shirt & a nike headband. LOL

Be a nice person. If you are on ground and you are going to 4th floor, stand by the buttons and be nice and ask what floor they would like. When they say anything between 2 and 4 always push 4 again. Just block it with your body so they can't see. By the time they realize it's not stopping on two you'll already be getting off on 4. Say 'oops, I don't know what happened! I pushed it for you!

Sometimes i've had to wait 20 minutes for an elevator to show up (I'm on the 10th floor).

Running up 13 steps is much better than waiting 20 minutes to save the effort.

Holy cow! Whats your beef? You said she had a six pack...
The elevator could only muster half a floor when she got on?

Anyway in some business towers and some condos if you take the stairs your @ss is locked out and you will end up downstairs, in the rear of the building, outside, with a long walk around front to the lobby. Check to see if the door locks behind you or you will regret it.

Wow, some of the replies in here are ridiculous. What gives you guys the right the prevent people from using the elevator how they wish? The elevator is there for everyone's use. If people want to use it for one floor, that's their prerogative. I understand it can be annoying, but to belittle someone and literally block them from using the elevator is ridiculous and childish behaviour. Sometimes people have injuries or other inconveniences that are not easily visible. It's not fair for you to judge someone for how they use the elevator.

Someone who's not fat and lazy?

Also what about the power you're making the elevator consume when you could easily use the stairs, or the wear and tear on the elevator that will make it need to be replaced sooner at huge cost to the environment, unlike some people I care about the environment.

Happens all the time at my school, people often make comments directly to the idiot that gets off at the 2nd floor. I hate waiting for a crowded elevator, so Ill often climb 6 to 7 stories worth of stairs, with a 50lb backpack attached to me. I consider it exercise. Where I live however, the first floor of units are on the 3rd floor and there are no easily accessable stairs to take you there, so nasty comments aren't made.

The answer to the OP. I am high net worth!! I don't want to go up the stairs then be sweaty in my Armani suit ok? What would I do if my boss sees me all sweaty in my high power suit? Or let my gfs see me all sweaty in my Armani suit.

You take the stairs Mr high net worth but want people to take the stairs.

Many places I worked at in the past block off the entrance to the stairs on the first floor for security reasons. However, if you wanted to go from floor 6 to 7, you can take the stairs.

But my current place of work, even though the company I work for owns the building (so no other tenants), the stairs are not to be used at any time. The fire alarms will go off... and has a few times.

Hmm. Not sure. The stairs exist, the doors are just locked so you can't get at them from the outside. I suppose they are unlocked by the concierge when there is a fire. The last time we had a power outage, they had to post a security guard in front of a propped open door so ppl could walk up.

So you can walk up then. In a fire the firemen would simply break the doors down if necessary. No way would they wait even for a second for a concierge to show up with a key.

I can see preventing stairs access for security but there will always be a set of stairs and access to the stairs if required.

But the residents are not given a key to the stairs because the door is on the side of the building (i.e. you don't walk past security), so you can't actually get to the stairs from the ground floor. I use the stairs to get out, but there is no way to get up from ground (or the basement, for that matter).

Obviously if you can't access a certain floor, or there's an injury/health reason as to why you can't do it, it's understandable. But in the example I used, you literally walk up about 10 steps to get to the next floor, to me that's just being lazy. It's like those people who circle a parking lot looking for 10 minutes trying to find a spot closest to the door, when you can park a little further back and walk there in 1/10th of the time.

LOL @ knee arthritis

In my experience most people who use some medical condition to excuse their laziness are just faking... There's even a medical term for this: malingering. It means to invent or exagerate a medical condition in order to gain sympathy and attention and justify behaviour that would normally be frowned upon (like laziness). You remind me of this kid I knew in high school gym who always had a medical excuse for why he couldn't participate... He spent almost every class sitting on the side watching instead of participating. What would you do with your "knee arthritis" if you lived in a time before elevator was invented?

This pi$ses me off to the point where now, I won't even wait for the lifts unless it is 3am or so. I also make my kids use the stairs instead of waiting. I have even gotten to the point where, instead of waiting with laundry or groceries, I go up the steps all the way to the 7'th floor. It is hard right now with this oppressive humidity, but it is a great way to get some bonus exercise.

So you can walk up then. In a fire the firemen would simply break the doors down if necessary. No way would they wait even for a second for a concierge to show up with a key.

I can see preventing stairs access for security but there will always be a set of stairs and access to the stairs if required.

At the sound of any fire alarm, Security's jobs are (usually in this order)
1 - Bring ALL elevators to ground floor with Fire Key
2 - Unlock (manually or automatically) doors that Fire Department may need
3 - Go to the front door, and make a brief announcement over the PA
4 - When the Fire Department arrives, tell them what floor the fire is on, and remain at the front door.
5 - Make any announcements the Chief tells you, and be ready to turn off the alarm when the chief tells you (we are NOT allowed to turn it off unless HE says so.)

THUS, if the doors are Mag Locked, they are usually automatically demagnetized upon fire alarm activation. This is done, because 99% of the buildings in Toronto that have mag-locks, have digitized fire alarms and the two systems are interconnected.
These same systems begin to draw air OUT of the building via the elevator shafts, and stairwells (thus removing oxygen temporarily), and also control the wet and dry sprinkler systems.

Standard rule for stairs is "Up one down two"

 Cause I'm going to the 4th floor. If I went to the 2nd floor I would use the stairs every time.

Why take the elevator if you're "only" going to the 4th floor? I'm sure someone as athletic and physically gifted as yourself could make it to the 4th floor before waiting for the elevator.

Small, petty man is small and petty.

I can't access the stairs in my Condo unless there is an emergency or I'm going DOWN. So there would be no option for using the stairs to go up to anyone in the building.. I'm on 10th floor so doesn't matter to me anyway

But the residents are not given a key to the stairs because the door is on the side of the building (i.e. you don't walk past security), so you can't actually get to the stairs from the ground floor. I use the stairs to get out, but there is no way to get up from ground (or the basement, for that matter).

my condo is like this. even worse, you can't open the lobby entrance to the stairs from either side. you can't go up but coming down, you have to exit from a side door that takes you outside. sucks in winter since you have to go out in the cold to enter the lobby.

This happens to me very often, its perfectly alright for disabled people or if they have mobility issues but the ones that can walk and take it for one floor are the worst. There are many ways to deal with these people such as blocking the door and not moving. There are other ways as well

You wanna know how I would deal with "those people" who try and stop me from using the elevator? Who are you to decide who gets to use it?

Heh, 'those people' will not do anything, they will quietly grumble and then complain on the internet while you ride the elevator like a boss.

I saw this lady who weighed about 300lbs, get on an elevator with me, holding a 6 pack of "diet coke" and take the elevator up what is literally half a floor. She was wearing an under armour t-shirt & a nike headband. LOL

I loled in my office when I read this. But it doesn't bother me at all when people do it. It is so petty that it's not worth wasting my time to health to become agitated over it.

Uhh no. If it pisses you off then you can take the stairs to avoid them.

Maybe they can't access their floor from the stairwells? Not every single floor is accessible from the stairwells. I know that in a building I used to work at, every other floor was inaccessible for whatever reason. You could get out, but not in. Same with the building I'm in now. Sometimes people get into the elevator on my floor, and take it one floor down. I always wondered why they would stand and wait for the elevator vs. walking when it's quicker, but then someone explained that not every single door opens to let you in.

Chill out man. So what if it's just one floor. Just wait a bit. You gotta be patient.

You sure live in a closed little world.

I wonder how you'd react to living with constant joint pain and swelling. Where it hurts like a bugger just to get out of bed sometimes. Where you need pull bars to get out of the bathtub. I'll wager you couldn't.

Arthritis is a very real condition especially among the 50+ crowd. Oddly enough, the knee feels fine when walking but not sitting. Walking down stairs is an exercise in agony in the winter. Upstairs is better, but not by much.

Besides, I never said I can't walk up or down stairs, it mostly (but not always) hurts to do so. Escalators, elevators and moving sidewalks are a godsend for me at my age.

But whatever, hopefully you'll never get this particular affliction. It's no fun at all and will eventually prevent me from playing my favorite sports, Golf and more Golf

I go on a lot of cruises and there are a LOT of obese people cruise ships. It always amazes me when people wait 5 mins for the elevator to go down 1 floor to the buffet...

I'm just glad I'm mobile enough I have no issue running up/down the stairs. Really helps when you need to beat the crowds onboard the a cruise ship!

Although I will admit... I use the elevator to go to/from the gym at work...

If you look at the shoes some women wear - lets just say they would not be safe on the stairs.

OP, ever try going up the stairs wearing stiletto's and in a dress/skirt? Yeah, not going up the stairs and if you try to block me then you'll hear about it from me and rip you a good one.

I am sure Mr OP Bao wouldn't bother taking the elevator if you were going up the stairs in your stiletto's and in a short skirt. He be right behind you look up. :)

Impossible Fire-code will never allow this..

Because firemen need to go up.

In my office building, only a few floors you can get into. The doors are locked to deny access from the staircase to the floor. People can go from the floor to the staircase but not vice versa. The doors may be unlocked when fire alarm sound but I don't really because I work on the floor that does not have the locked door.

We have a few false alarm in the past 20 years. Guess what the firemen used. The elevator.
People in the building walk down using the stairs and the firemen go up using elevator.

What is wrong with you using elevator? I walk up 6 down 6 so that those in the 10th floor won't be delayed. Of course, since I walk up 6 and down 6, people like you who "misuse" the elevator won't bother me.

Sure you do... see my reply to the other liar above...

I would love to see you use the stairs regularly after having your patella kicked out and broken in a soccer match. Mine healed kind of improperly so it swells easily and sometimes the joint clicks, and stairs really aggravate it. I said I don't mind (even like) walking for a long time, but I'm lazy because it physically hurts me to use stairs? That's ridiculous.

I don't see it as a problem at all. They're entitled to use the elevator as everyone else. Where do you draw the line? Oh it's only two floors so he/she can take the stairs or 3 floors. Bleh
