Hi All,

I'm looking to share internet with my brother. His house is approx. 100 feet away (2 houses in between). I'm able to pickup pretty good internet signals from his house (only in the top front rooms of my house). However I don't get any signals in backend of my house at all. I want to see if I can spread it across my house. Should I get an extender and install it in my house or get a better wireless router for him with better range or both? If so which router do you recommend with the best range? I am looking into the Netgear N900 or R6300. Any other suggestions? Thanks!

what is the current router?
does it have antenna(s)?
if you are technical person, you can make larger antennas which will boost the signal.

My brother has an older router. I'm not a technical person either. I was told I can setup some sort of a vpn through 2 access point, but I have no clue how to set that up.

Get a wireless repeater. For best signal you should also get 2 directional antennas (one for each of you) and set up them along the line of sight.

As you mention to get 2 antennas, do I need to get a wireless router at my house as well and attached the antennas to it to pickup the signals at my brother's house? You need to get a range extender; it can be a router too (like implemented in ddwrt) but router functionality is unnecessary in your scenario. For best results you connect one antenna to your brother's router, and the other to your wifi extender. Of course, you might get away with just one directional antenna, or even none at all.
