View Full Version : Compact, light umbrella stroller for traveling

Going to take my kids overseas for the first time and looking into stroller options. This will primarily for the younger son who will be 1.5 years old. But I expect the older son (who will be 3.5 years old) to be able to use it as well if needed. Many umbrella strollers I've checked out so far folds in such a way that the length does not diminish significantly. I'm wondering if there are strollers out there that will fold in half as well so that it is compact for carrying and traveling?
So ideally, the features we are looking for are:
- Compact once folded
- Light weight
- Seat can recline for sleeping
- Comes with cover/case for travelling
Any suggestions?

Have you checked out the Combi strollers? I think they have strollers with the "tri-fold" and it might be a little smaller than usual umbrella strollers.

We bought the Peg Perego Si for our daughter and have been pretty happy with it so far. Pretty much fits all your criteria except it doesn't come with the travel case/cover. You can buy a generic one though.

We had the Quinny Zapp & it was an excellent travel stroller, but it didn't recline. The wheels are amazing for malls and aeroport terminals & it folds up relatively small & comes with a case

It definitely travels well and is easy to use as we have the same one. We have a travel bag for it that was designed for the p3, but works for it (it's just slightly larger). We are actually thinking of selling it so if you do pick up the stroller and still want a bag, PM me.

http://www.pegperegocanada.com/babyproducts-catalog/2012/SI+CLASSICO+WITH+FRONT+BARI checked out the Si and it's still too big of a stroller, but Peg Perego does make the Pliko Mini which seems to fit the bill even better. 13 lbs. and folds to 37"x13"x13". I have a PP Switch and the Aria Twin so I'm leaning towards the Mini since it does have all the features I'm looking for.

Is the bag you have this one?

If so, how much are you selling it for? PM me as I would be interested if I end up getting the Pliko Mini.

We have the Si, and have travelled recently with a 4 month old all through Japan.
This stroller is very good, easy to push, not too big and has a big basket.
I don't think I would have wanted to go with a smaller stroller, it would not have felt as sturdy.

Quinny also has the Zapp Xtra, which does recline but doesn't come with a bag and you have to remove parts to fold it.

We use the Quinny Zapp as well for travelling. We fly at least 3 times a year to Europe, the only disadvantage is that it does not recline. It fits very nice in the travel bag (comes with it) and we are sometimes even allowed to store the stroller in the plane since it is so compact.

I was also looking for a lightweight stroller travel unit myself for the past month and decided on the Quinny Zapp. It folds compact and maneuvers well in tight spots and easy to push with one hand. It doesnt recline but at long as your child can sit up on their own, they should be fine. THe seat is wide and deep for your child to grow into.
A few cons though, The wheels are slightly noisy but you will get use to it and its not really light as its around 16-17 lbs.
I did look at other strollers, but they were all big and long when folded. The Zapp has them all beat in terms of the size when folded.
Canabee Baby online has it on sale right now for $149.99 and comes with all the accessories (carry bag, rain cover, and maxi coxi adaptors for a baby seat) No free shipping, but you can have it delivered to the store for pickup at no charge.

i'm also thinking Quinny Zapp or Xtra from Canadbee too. They actually free delivery for $150 or more. so, get one of the cheapest item from them, then you get free shipping ;-)

Uppababy G-Luxe is another one to look at: 11lbs, 12x16x42" when folded. I was going to get one, but ended up getting the a great deal on the G-Lite

I've narrowed the search to about 4 strollers:
Peg Perego Pliko Mini
weight: 12.5 lbs.
folded size: 37"x13"x12"
~$249
Chicco Capri
11 lbs.
folded size: 42"x10"x8"
~$94
Maclaren Triumph
11 lbs.
folded size: 41"x10"
~$230
UPPAbaby G-Luxe
11 lbs.
folded size: 42"x16"x12"
~$200
Will go to my local baby store to check them out soon for comparison.

One thing I noticed for the UPPAbaby G-luxe (from looking at photos & videos online) is that when the stroller is folded, the front wheels seem to stick out a bit (to the point where the folded stroller makes a "V" shape, instead of folding together completely). Is this by design (to balance it so that it can stand on its own)? And can you fold it/lock it more compactly if need be?
This is what I'm talking about...

There's a reclinable version of Quinny Zapp, but it doesn't fold into a compact square like the non-reclinable one.

Which one did you end up deciding on?
We're looking for something compact as well for travel, but I don't like how the Quinny Zapp doesn't recline since they won't be able to sleep in it if we are out somewhere. For those who have the Zapp, did you wish it reclined so they can nap in it?
We're considering the following that can fully recline:
- Uppa Baby G-Luxe, 11lbs, $200
http://www.canabeebaby.com/product_info.php?products_id=3167&osCsid=b3bb7f562d907b5c94108eecad646e34
- Peg Perego Pliko Mini, 13lbs, $230
http://www.dearbornbaby.com/product.php?productid=4438&cat=0&page=1
- Hauck Turbo Deluxe, 14 lbs, $130
http://www.toysrus.ca/product/index.jsp?productId=12696710
The Hauck seemed pretty similar to the Pliko Mini when we tried it at babiesrus. Just not sure whether the wheels will hold up in the long run because the floor model seemed pretty beat up.
Our main stroller is a Bugaboo Cameleon so it feels like most umbrella strollers have unstable/wobbly wheels...?

I checked out the Uppababy G-luxe and Peg Perego Pliko Mini extensively and for now, have ruled out the Uppababy. I don't like how it folds up with the front wheels sticking out like that. I like the way the Peg Perego Pliko Mini folds up as it is similar to how our Peg Perego Switch stroller folds up as well. We're actually thinking about selling our Peg Perego car seat & base, plus our Switch stroller and use the money towards the Mini, since from this point on, the Mini may be suitable for our all-around stroller. We also have the PP Aria Twin when we know both our kids will want to restin the stroller (like going to the Zoo).
The only thing holding me back right now is the price of the PP Mini. So for now, I'm waiting for a sale on the Mini and if I do find one, I'll probably jump on it. We won't need to travel until Christmas, so it gives me a few months to keep looking and trying to find a sale.
I haven't seen the Hauck stroller at BabiesRUs... maybe the next time I'm there, I'll take a look.

We went with the Maclaren Triumph. Comes with a raincover. Travel bag and cupholder are extra. The stroller is nice and light, reclines too. The biggest negative for me was the after sales service. A damn rivet came loose, which holds the bracket for the sunshade. We waited 2 months for even a proper response to have the stroller repaired. This was after numerous emails and phone calls. We finally resorted to negative posts on FB to have any sort of decent reply.

....
No problems with the zapp non recline. My 14 month old was able to sit in it and sleep comfortably . Its slightly angled back so they are not in an upright position. Kids sleep in any awkward postiton anyways when they are dead tired LOL

I did look at the Pliko mini as well but for $100 less for the zapp and it being more compact when fold and comes with all the accessories eg rain shield and carry bag. I opt for the zapp.
Maybe some stores might have the 2011 minis at a clearance price as the 2012 models are currently out but i had no luck finding them.

I got 2 Maclaren on Kijiji used
Triumph for $100
Quest (better model) for $80
We just washed them thoroughly and all is good
bought rain covers in US for $20
Happy so far after 1 year
funny that we got asked in US Target stores by other moms where to find Maclaren... I would've thought it's easier to find in US instead

Hey, just bumping this thread as we have been looking for a travel stroller. Where did you see the Chicco Capri for that price? (Just found it at Walmart.ca but they are out of stock)
Thanks!
