Hello, so I'm getting a 2008 Civic DX-G from a family member's dealership in Ontario. Unfortunately it turns out that I'm gonna need an out of province inspection. I called 2 different ok-tires and a honda dealership, and they told me 130$, 160$, and 200$. I'd be okay with the 130$ but if I can save more on this test it would be great. It's 100% unmodified and the close family member I'm buying it from is a pro mechanic himself that tells me the car is 100% so I don't want a shady mechanic that's "willing to let things slip" and might ruin things.
Also, does anyone know how much the actual inspection request form is gonna cost from the registry? This is my first ever car purchase so I very much appreciate everyone's help.

A cost of $130 sounds about right....that's what I paid for such inspections.

It's always nice to save more money though! I read somewhere that someone got it for 65$, does that seem realistic? And any idea where he might have got it?

It's been a week and you're still trying to save $60 on a potential $8k+ purchase?

Na, when I imported our two cars from BC to Calgary, we went to Ryanco, and it was less than $100 each. One car had to have the brakes and rotors replaced, but I knew that already before going to the inspection, so the fact that it passed everything else means they didn't try and scam me (although I remember the rotors themselves was at a slightly higher price than if I just went to CT and bought them myself).

Out of province inspection is listed as $90.47 currently on their website, which is basically what I paid years ago.

It's still gonna be another few weeks till i get the car, what have I got to lose if I keep searching for cheaper while I wait?

Thank you, that's the cheapest I've found so far... And as long as you say they're trusted then they might be the ones I go to.
And as I said I'm completely new to this... When I get the car am I allowed to drive it to the registry and to the mechanic? Or do I have to find some other way to transport it?

As long as the car is registered and insured from another province, you can drive it in AB for a certain amount of time (can't remember exactly how long, 60-90 days or something like that, but don't quote me on that as it's been a while).
If when you get the car and it's not registered or insured already from Ontario with plates, then you must find alternative means of getting it to and from the garage.
Once you have the out of province inspection report, you then have to get it insured. I recommend TD Meloche as I called around to many companies and they had the best rates by far, and their service is pretty good as well.
It's not until you have the inspection report plus proof of insurance plus proof of AB residency can you finally get the car registered at the registry office (and that's assuming you already have an AB driver's license, since if you don't, you have to get that first as well).
Watch out for your timing though. The out of province inspection report has a time limit on it and expires after a certain time frame from when you get it done to when you register the car.

First of all thank you for explaining it all to me, makes a lot more sense now.
Unfortunately the car is not plated, registered, or insured in any province right now. Is there some kind of temporary registration/insurance I can get? I'm going to have to drive over to the auction company's area that the car was shipped with and pick it up from there.
As for insurance, I'm going under my parents' policy because I'm still a dependent university student.
