View Full Version : Why do they always discontinue the thing we like?

Don't you hate it when you finally found something you really liked but they got discontinued?
Discovered an oatmeal-clay soap and they discontinued it just a few months later.
Loved the Superstore tie-top sandwich bags, can't find them anymore.
Started buying the Sally's whole wheat bundles cereal three months ago and now our local Walmart carries every flavor but the whole wheat bundles!
Is this part of Murphy's law? Or Captain Murphy has a cousin with another law that controls our product of choice? >:(

Maybe you just have a taste for unpopular things?
Or some things just end up being good products that aren't profitable enough.

There are alot of items in supermarkets that maybe popular to some folks are not popular for the majority. In those cases the supplier pulls it off the shelves and replace it with another product.

I supposed you're correct. Most people like ziploc or fold-top types of sandwich bags. And I bet not so many people like good ol' boring aka healthy whole wheat cereals!

Like Sandi said, these products are not in popular..

Have you tried Fibre One cereal? I hate healthy whole wheat type cereals, but that one tastes really good too!

Lever 2000 Pure Rain scented bar soap was fantastic, but they discontinued it. You can still get the liquid variety, but it isn't the same and real men don't use liquid soap or lather builders.
It was magic. Twelve hours after showering, I'd still have women and girls ask me what that great scent I had on was. Of course, then they'd mention that their husband or boyfriend would need to get some of that, but the point is that attention was paid. Axe scents can eat their heart out; they had nothing on Pure Rain!
Apparently there were human health concerns associated with the product, but if it was a choice between no soap and no action versus potential risk and lots of attention, I say pass the soap please.

In fact I have. I can't remember exactly why I didn't like it. It was something in the ingredients, probably too much sodium. Yes, it tasted pretty nice!

Ha! Was the soap green in color? Hubby used no other soap but Lever 2000. I've bought both the white and blue ones but he didn't like them, only the green ones. The only green Lever 2000 I can find these days are Aloe and hubby is not too crazy about them. I use only shower gel because I like to lather up with as shower sponge! My favorite right now is goat milk and honey!

I usually stock up on all my favorite discontinued in Canada products when I'm in the USA.
Cookie Crisp Cereal
Cap'n Crunch with Crunch Berries Cereal
Tahati Treat
Vanilla/Cherry Coke
Cherry 7-up
It sucks I can only get those things there, but it makes them that much better when I do have them.

Pontiac 6000 - that car was so good, I never wanted to drive when I found out GM wasn't making them anymore last year.

On the flip side, I'm glad they discontinued asbestos, DDT, leaded gasoline and smoking in buildings.

Not everyone thinks "whole wheat" is healthy. In fact, some believe it will kill you.

If we still had DDT we might still not have bed bugs and Malaria could have well been eliminated.

This. What we piddly little Canadians get, are often times test runs of things available in the US to gauge market reaction. A lot of times what we get are repacks of product where bulk sales have fallen through, or have been cancelled outright from the bigger market wholesale customers. Instead of taking a bath on the product sitting there, they pack into a bilingual label and send it on. You would be extremely surprised that most (and I am talking high 98'th percentile here) US market consumer products have been submitted to and approved by the Canadian regulatory agencies. The MAIN and HUGE block to getting these products to the Canadian market, is the bilingual marketing involved to get it on the shelves. That is expensive and often times not worth it, when you look at the small Canadian market return. Now that the US economy seems to be healing somewhat, we will be forgotten again. That said, the entrance of US retailers to the Canadian market can only be a good thing when it comes to new products.

I am a straight man who uses a mesh sponge/loofah because it feels manly to be exfoliating those dead skin cells with this flexible, pliable, spherical plastic webbed sandpaper. Grrrr! Since RFD is a money-saving forum, the lather you can generate from rubbing a wet bar of soap on a loofah is INSANE and the bar of soap will last you longer and cost you less than a bottle of shower gel. I used to burn through shower gel until I switched back to soap bars.
But if you like the scents, stick to shower gel. I like plain Ivory soap bars for its lack of smell so I can wear whatever cologne on my blank corporeal canvas.

I've tried using the sponge and a bar of soap but the soap generate from the sponge got washed away very quickly. The lather from shower gel seems to stick to the sponge longer. I bought a huge bottle of goat milk honey shower gel from Dollarama for only $2! Loved it and of course it's forever out of stock! Wonder if they will ever come back!

It was a genius invention but GM's greed killed everything. I hope GM will not exist in 5 years and/or go bankrupt.

I just want to verify that you are turning off your water flow after you have worked up an epic lather and not just washing it away.

I think I'm the "other guy" looking to buy this cereal... I was pissed to see it gone, but Wal-mart has successfully implemented their "sugared cereal only" plan quite well.

Unfortunately we're the minority. Seems like most people like the sugary stuff.
I am not a big Walmart fan but I make it a habit to pick up a bag of cereal whenever I go there. I wished I had gone there more often because I now only have two bags left! :(
