View Full Version : Rude Neighbours

Well this is just a semi rant, but an observation I've been noticing for the past few days. Don't know if this thread will be locked but here goes.

So my family and I live in a new community in Richmond Hill/Aurora for the past 1 year and as it is, at the back, there is no fence dividing the houses from side to side and the older houses in the back. So pretty much its an open space. However as residences, we have to follow the rules and not trespass onto another's property without the owners consent.

That being said, there is this one particular family (Asian, yes sorry to bring the fact up) that lives 6 houses down (1st house on the street). My mom and I have been noticing that in the evening times, they have been coming down all the way to one of our neighbour's house who lives one house behind us. He basically grows vegetables and so do we and what they do is, they start taking crops/vegetables from his garden and take it back to their house. They bring some sort of scissors to cut the vegetables from the plants.

My mom and I thought they're just observing, but actually they're "hoarding" off someone else. Its still not correct to trespass onto someone else's property as well.

They also tried coming to our house few times but have not seen anything been taken as of yet.

However, yesterday I was outside and when they came to that same neighbour's house, they immediately saw me and they looked surprised and hid the scissors behind their backs and went back to their house.

What do you guys think? Don't you think its rude for anyone to do such things?

Eventually we did inform our neighbour and now he keeps a constant watch on his garden and so do we.

It's stealing. Put up a couple of real or fake security cameras.

That is a valid point, but from what I have observed/seen, the only neighbours he associates with are his other two neighbours on each sides, plus one house down and us. That whole row of bungalows behind us are all retired couples.

mabye because its akward?

regardless

the best solution right now is for op to talk to his neighbor and inform them of whats happening.

IF they dont know about this, they will do all the work for OP.
If they do, than there is no problem.

I hope every day that these people come and try to take vegetables from my garden. I will happily turn the hose on them, full blast. I had a friend who used to have his garden torn up by older Asian women - I believe these ladies then take the vegetables to Spadina and sell them on the street.

Next time you see them go into your neighbor's place, go over there and prevent them from leaving until they drop everything they've taken. You can tell them you're housesitting for your neighbor and aren't going to tolerate theft.

The good thing about the hose is that you can say you're just watering the garden. Plus the water pressure would teach them a lesson.

I don't suffer trespassers lightly, and we've put too much work into our garden to have someone just take that for nothing.

Well if there was already an arrangement, he normally gives out stuff but he never gives out to anybody else in this neighbourhood besides us, and his two neighbours (each beside his house).

Here's a pic of his house:

If they are stealing your vegetables you need to tell them to stop or you will contact the police! They are stealing food from your family, don't sit back and take it! I would be angry if I caught people doing that. Judging by the size of the houses, it is obvious they are not poor. I would only feel different in a situation like this is if it were a poor family stealing some vegetables to feed themselves.

You are correct. The houses are pretty fairly sized here. I know that their house is roughly around 3,000 square feet by passing it few times and they have a 3 series (older model) and an X5 (somewhat new model?)

So go figure eh?

That's true and that's life. To be honest, I've seen such things happen in India as well, then again, half of the population or a big chunk are in poverty, and I could understand. However, a well off family shouldn't be doing such things.

maybe they think it is a communal vegetable garden?

Well as far as I know, I don't think such things exist in a community/neighbourhood when clearly the owner of the garden doesn't give permission heh.

However, my neighbour's neighbour and his neighbour also have gardens in their backyard but on a smaller scale. So basically all three homes have these gardens. I did see them yesterday starting at the first house, observing the plants and trying to pry inside.

My thoughts exactly. What's the point of rallying a bunch of people on the internet? The neighbourly thing to do is to go over and let them know that if they ever want any vegetables, to just ask you.

No need to hose, setup a camera, or call the police....all over a bunch of home grown vegetables? Come on.

You should first clarify with your neighbour that has the garden.

I wouldn't be surprised if people were stealing vegetables. I've seen people steal flowers from gardens before. A few years ago, my mom had gone to Costco to buy these nice flower baskets to hang up the lights at the front of the house. She bought them and then hung them up. The next day they were gone.

You guys complain about your neighbours but I think mine are the worse. On the days I don't have the central a/c on and the windows are open my whole house smells like curry thanks to my neighbours and its the smelly kind of curry so it stinks. Its always daily right when I wake up. Then in the afternoon all the way till 10pm there is loud Jamaican music thumping in the neighborhood. All played on the crappiest of speakers.

In the winter I snowblow my premises and my neighbour expects me to snow blow theirs as well for free. Because of their attitude I've never done it again. I used to clear it up but now I just blow all my snow there.

Funny you should mention about the weird music. I was in the house one day and there was this really loud music coming from outside. The curry is just the worst smelling curry I've witnessed in my life. Don't get me wrong I like curry but this is just cruel amounts of contaminated air particles. There is like 5+ houses that are doing this and even though they are a couple houses down the smell is strong. One of my neighbours also smoke weed and never maintain their house. It's just a disgusting place. They take advantage of the fact that they leased the home. They park 3 cars in a single car driveway by stealing space off the neighbours and by using the lawn. The lawn has a crushed path way made with concrete and they completely destroyed that to pieces by driving over it.

We had the same problem a couple of years ago, someone stole some corn, peas, and a couple of mature pumpkins from our garden.

I put some exacto blades into a couple more cobbs of corn and smeared dogcrap all over a third pumpkin that was rotton on the bottom. Those dissapeared a couple of days later.

Never had anything else dissapear since, so whoever was doing it either moved, died, or got the message and just stopped.

One thing I learned about this thread. Your neighbour in the GTA is an ***** and rather post ***** on the internet and needs to be spoon fed on what to do. Let me guess uni degree?

No self-estem, & no balls. Welcome to living in the GTA.

Since you need to be spoon-fed

1. Go talk to neighbour with garden about the veggies.
2. Go back to your life.

"Good fences make for good neighbours."

I don't have a good fence, so people alway steal stuff. If they can see it, they can covet it. I've had sunflowers, dahlias, lilies, rhododendrons, opium poppies, asian pears, goji berries and its related plant, stolen by people walking by or who live nearby. (Car was stolen, license plate stolen a few times, boat stolen.) One of my neighbours saw me upset and he said that I should be happy that the stolen plants made someone else happy. I think the best advice is not to expect people to behave properly. You have to adjust your expectations or else build a barrier or alarm system. It is ridiculous to think that everyone is a good person and be surprised when something happens.

Funny, one time a neighbour and I were salvaging some granite blocks from a demolition site with permission from the developer, for use in a community project. There were some passersby who thought we were stealing! So, it's best not to assume those neighbours were stealing. (However, in all likelihood they were.)

No effiin' way would an Italian person let you go into the garden and get anything unless you are a relative. You can wait while we get the vegetables, but never touch an Italian's tomatoes. I'd take a picture of the thievery and give it to the Italian guy and let nature take it's course.

I have to admit I turned the hose on a neighbour and he had to run away. I was nine when I did that one.

You shorten them on that tomato sauce and you are done!
