Getting a 1 bedroom apartment for 900 with utilities and parking included. Its an older building but it was clean and the apartment is spacious and clean when i saw it. I have seriously seen worse apartments in nicer areas going for 1000 and more.

So is this Eglinton and Laird area OKAY? By okay i mean no worries of thefts, stabbings, shootings, drug dealing etc? Any experiences? Please let me know.

For those who don't know this area, its between Bayview and Leslie on Eglinton East.

I drive by this area all the time. I remember there were some SUVs (all Nissan Pathfinders or something) that were stolen off driveways all in the same evening. That was the only negative news I encountered. It's a nice area because you're driving distance to downtown, but you get a lot of big box stores in that area. I think there's a new grocery store moving in too.

I heard about that too. Thanks for the response

I concur, it's a wonderful area!
Must eat at Olde Yorke Fish & Chips and Mikado for sushi.

btw, I wouldn't trust my RS6 in the parking lot of one of those old apartments.

Eglinton & Laird is a middle/high class area. Eglinton is pretty safe. Laird is somewhat industrial looking... it is dark and scary at night, no lights and few cars, but I would imagine your chances of running into a random thug are still pretty low.

I also agree on the Olde York Fish & Chips... best fish & chips in Toronto.

They were Toyota Highlanders that were stolen. Leaside is a great area. It's south of where I live (Post Road). I house my slaves in bungalows throughout Leaside.

If you are not into drugs , guns and personal fights, why would you ask such an imposing question?
What about asking a neighbor there or do you not care about people ?

We love Leaside. Great place to raise a family.

As for the apartments north of Eglinton from Laird towards Leslie, these are not filled by the same upper middle class residents. We have a friend who lives there and he is just recently separated...the manager of the building had commented that this made up a significant portion of the renters. Our sons friend also live there, parents are a chef and a read estate agent. Anyway, luxury, these are not.

Laird is not scarey at night in the slightest. We and many others are pushing prams or push chairs to many of the shops...even at night. That being said, Bayview is far nicer.

Olde Yorke is good. Mikado is only so so for sushi...better for cooked food.

There is a new set of stores opening with more cheap eats...if I recall correctly, 5 guys and mucho burrito.

Where the new Longo's is going to be?

Agreed, Olde York is good. But you need to get there before 5:00pm otherwise you're waiting awhile for a table.

Wait...there's a good Fish & Chips place and also a sushi place there? I pass by that area everyday when almost at my workplace...hmmm should stop by some time.

It's a very safe area and it's conveniently located. I used to live in Leaside (not quite where you would be - south of Eg, east of Bayview), but I never used to lock my garage or my cars (they were left outside). Never had a problem. Neighbours always on the look-out for suspicious activity, etc. Friendly, people always say hi when you walk by, the neighbours introduce themselves to you, etc... About as good as you get in the city (neighbourhood-wise). I live in Rosedale now and the people here are frigid.

Ye Olde Fish & Chips is good. My favourite sushi is Sushi Marche II - it's not a place you'd think of stopping in (and it's a takeout place only) - but his sushi is fantastic.

There will be some major construction in the coming years though for the Eglinton Crosstown line.

Something to think about.

Seems like a quiet good area. That's kind of the cusp of the 'nicer' part to the 'ghetto' part as it's West of Leslie/Don Mills. I drive by that area alot and it seems generally quiet and peaceful. You really don't see too much foot traffic there.

Good location regarding access to DVP, downtown, etc.

I lived at Bayview and Eglinton for years and absolutely loved my time in that area. Those apartments were recently refaced if I remember correctly and while older, seem to be taken care of and the people don't seem to be an issue. Overall Leaside is a great place, very central, and amenities galore (DVP close, downtown via Bayview extension close, Yonge and Eglinton close, parks and trails close, etc.). My only concern would be as another poster mentioned the construction for the cross town LRT. There's lots of million dollar homes literally just behind (north) of those apartment buildings, the area is safe day or night. I say go for it.

The bulk of the construction will be underground. There will be a station at Brentcliff (kind of wish there was one at Bayview).

Awesome price! Might I ask which building it is? I'm looking for something similar.!

The latest plans I've seen have LRT stations at Bayview and Laird. Where did you hear Brentcliffe?

Don't get excited about using the LRT, btw, it will start running in 2020 at the very earliest (not expecting any earlier than 2022 myself).

Whereas most of the tunnel construction will indeed be undergrond (boring), the contruction of stations will be very significant indeed. Metrolinx people explained last fall it involves digging deep from sidewalk to sidewalk - covering up halvess so in those spots there will be 1 (yes ONE) lane each way on Eglinton.
That will lead to absolute traffic MAYHEM - and it will last 2-3 years in respective locations. If you thought the traffic around St.Clair was bad during construction, this may be several levels worse. Not to mention they're building box stores like crazy in the same area - with the exponential folly of proposing a supposed Wal-Mart (car-magnet if you ever see one) right in the same area.

As long as you're thinking appartment rental, short or mid-term, however, I wouldn't worry too much about the LRT part of it. Metrolinx people recently indicated none of the work east of Yonge has been contracted yet - and that it might be 2014 or beyond before they start doing anything on this end of the underground part of the LRT (here's hoping the Ford brothers don't manage to screw this one up).

In practical terms, you probably can't find a safer area of Toronto than Leaside. Not the most exciting area if you are looking for access to tons of restaurants or bars, but I grew up there and never once felt unsafe.
