View Full Version : Recommendations for LCD Monitor (No Tuner) used as TV Set-Up

I have a 42" LCD Monitor with no TV tuner that I had been using as a TV. I was using a HD PVR from Rogers before cancelling it recently, because I just decided the rental fee wasn't worth it and I've had several boxes break on me so buying one didn't seem like a good idea either. I know I need a tuner to watch TV again on it, but at the same time I also know Rogers is phasing out Analog. This makes me unsure about wasting money on one of these and having it be obsolete in the near future.

I'm also looking to get a HD Media Player like a WD TV Live or something like it. I would love if it came with a TV Tuner as well, but I can't seem to find any that do.

Any suggestions for what I should be doing? Specific product recommendations would be appreciated too, because there's very limited information on the ATSC standalone boxes out there. I would be looking at other options like OTA, but cable is kind of needed because I mostly just watch sports when I do watch TV.

Edit: I need a set-up that doesn't require a computer.

I need something that doesn't require a computer. I should have been more clear about this I guess.

Don't think that would work with Rogers from what I know. Anyone have any other options?

I was thinking maybe a cheap HTPC with a TV Tuner would be a possibility. Any suggestions if I go that route?

You might have a go in the OTA channels discussion. People there can tell you what works and what doesn't depending on your area. I'm not ready to give up satellite TV yet as there are few alternatives. Even using net resources, choices are limited to watching shows weeks later or hunting for them on torrents or share sites. Since I like a lot of old movies, very few of them are available from other sources, so cutting the cable simply won't do.

Good luck...
