View Full Version : Whats with all the morons speeding through school/playground zones?

Is speeding through school and playground zones like the new cool thing to do now? Does it make you a badass knowing youre doing 40 and 50kmh in a school zone? This is beyond pathetic. Everyday, I cruise through 2 playground zones on my way home and I will be doing 30kmh (what you are suppose to be doing!, not 40, not 45, but 30!) and all I see is these morons, one after the other just blast by me like theyre on a normal road. I maybe see one of every 15 cars actually notice the sign and obey it. Everyone else then change lanes and cruise by. Theres kids everywhere, have some conscientious for **** sakes. Todays drivers are a disgrace.

well... i must say... its not against the law going 40 in those zones.... the road's limit is 40 right?

but people are in a rush to.... "who knows where, who cares about the kids, they should stay away from the roads" - Trollers
even if you're going 30 and have a slow reaction, going what ever speed will be bad anyways
going 30 on a 40 road will only create more road rage to and not pay attention the the kids running around =/

All the school zones I have passed through have 40 kph signs just before them.. Do the ones you're referring to have 30 kph signs?

Aww, having a bad day and need to vent about petty things? Driving at 40-45km/h is not in any way unreasonable. You seem to think just because you go slow it makes you a safe driver which is not necessarily true.

I prefer a slow driver vs a fast one

It's like the stop sign right around the corner from my house. Almost every morning I see someone get pulled over for running the sign or doing a rolling stop.

OP, driving 40kmh is what you SHOULD be doing in a school zone, not going snail's pace at 30kmh (which obstructs traffic). Occasionally, if the school zone is empty (i.e. Summer), going 45kmh isn't too bad IMO. The most important point is keep your focus. Look ahead, watch out of children, especially those who love to run across the road to catch a bus, or simply cross the road between parked cars/trucks. If you dont drive safe, it doesnt matter how fast you are driving, you are going to run over that child/children.

Most of the time they have those flashing signs that indicate people should drive 40, or else drive at posted speed... I think OP is living somewhere special where the school zone is 30...

I've seen much worse. There are some areas in Toronto where I see drivers regularly do 70+ km/h in school zones and residential streets.

Where are the police when you really need them?

The Gardiner is also full of speeders. Where are the po pos? Seriously, I'm doing 100 and these douches will blow by me at what seems like 120-130 only to either brake hard to yield to congestion or slice and dice lanes like a total idiot causing everyone to brake because they're startled which kills the continuity of traffic.

I love it when they ride my bumper.. I'll just let off the gas and frustrate them. This is in the middle lane for crying out loud. You think 95/100km/h is slow? I''ll do 80 or 75km/h just to frustrate you even more.

lol OP seems mad. For my G (G2?) test I went 30 in a school zone and was yelled at by examiner.

I always go 50, even in school zone. There is absolutly no reason why you can't stop the car when going 50. I don't do it because I'm a bad ***** , I do it becasue 50 is SLOW as it is, and there are not normally kids running all over the street un supervised.

If there are then that is a bigger issue then me going 50.

If I'm driving in a 3 lane highway, absolutly no reason to not go 120 in left lane. People like you piss me off, going 100 in middle lane. You make it impossible for us to pass people who are going slow in the left lane.

We take the highway to drive fast, not drive 80km an hour in the left lane like some idiots do.

The simple rule should be go the Speed Limit if you are doing 10km/20km under the speed limit (ie 90km/h on a highway) then you either get to the far right most lane or get the hell off the highway and take regular roads. people like that cause more issues then speeders, they are the same people that will cut in front of you and accelerate slow and cause an approaching car to slam on the brakes.

We need regular road testing for everybody.

Aug 3rd, 2012, 11:45 AM
Always downshift and slam on the brakes before the speed sign. Gotta save those precious seconds in a racecar, kinda like hitting the speed limiter line when going into pits.
If you get hit, they're following too close and you get a new bumper and claim for soft tissue injury, win win.

If that were the case 100% of the time then why would the speed limit reduction be necessary? Kids do dart out sometimes, are you willing to risk on possibly hitting a child and had to deal with the consquence for the rest of your life? I'm not, and no one should. I actually go 30kph or even 20kph when I turn on to a side street.

Drive at reasonable speed relative to the traffic, road, and weather conditions is a sign of responsibility, and maturety.

Before you think I am one of those "Slow Pokes", I assure you I am not, I've gone fast in the past, sometimes very fast, and looking back now a few times irresponsibly fast, I can still hang with the traffic flow just fine and have two cars currently that can easily get me in trouble if I didn't have the discretion, however I have not had an accident in almost 30 years, and have not had a speeding ticket for well over 10 years, how you might ask? By driving responsibly, and maturely.

At least you have the 8-5 time window, most locations in GTA do not have that, as well it still doesn't matter if it's summer as there are summer schools still.

Regardless, I tend to slow down just a bit in the school zones, just as I still quickly check both directions going through a green light, just in case.

On a side note, I had seen (and nearly hit) a pedestrian that crossed at a school crossing at 10pm at night. They were not wearing any reflective clothing, there was no overhead lighting on the area. They got an earful of my horn. Idiots should be using a school crossing like that at night.

Cytosol

I was actually going to make basically the exact same topic. I've certainly noticed the same thing, as I pass through a playground zone twice a day to and from work. At least 50% of the time, someone will be very obviously speeding, if not pass me.

The only reason I can think of is that people are somehow stupid enough to think playground zones aren't in effect while school is out, or just plain mix them up and think they are school zones. I NEVER even go 1km over, because I know the consequences are just brutal. It's simply not worth risking to shave about 5 seconds off my commute.

It's to the point where people will ride my ***** half way through the zone, then angrily switch lanes, then speed up to 50 or 60. Every time that happens I just hope to god a cop saw it.

On the other hand, it isn't enforced nearly enough. In my last 3 years of driving, I haven't once seen a cop set up a speed trap for school/playground zones. I guess construction zones and off ramps are much more lucrative.
