Hi All, Off late, I started observing that my car jerks off suddenly and at the same time RPM goes up suddenly up to 4 and then come down. I showed it to my mechanic and he told me that it's a tranny issue and it needs to be replaced. For temporary fix, he changed the Tranny Fluid(LUCAS) as I don't want to spend huge amount in replacing the tranny. The car is already driven 275000 KMs and I have spent alot on it such as Timing Belt change, New all season Tires, Front & Rear Brake pads & rotors, gasket valve etc. The engine is in good condition. I would like your opinion on selling my car as if I sell it as in it's current condition, how much it would fetch. The car interiors & exteriors are still look good.Kindly provide your comments.

275000 kilometers is high mileage and i would say around 2000-2500 depending on the body.

I drive now and then 1997(or 1998) camry with 360k with rusted body and dying interior. Your car isn't old!

You could fetch about 2.5k to prob max of 3k. Depending on the Year and exterior condition of the car
I had my tranny fail too for the TL... twice

Your looking at 3k at least for the rebuilt transmission. I would say around 2000-3000 is a fair price.
It'll run for another 80k km if your lucky with the new tranny.

Surprising the first tranny lasted 275k. Assuming its a 2000 or 2001: $1500.

The year was 2000.I got it from the original owner but I am not sure whether he had any issue with the tranny & replaced it.

Realastic you might get $1500 tops
I would list on kijiji for $2000 and go from there.

OP might be better off fixing and keeping it due to the work OP put into it.

Yeah..I am thinking of this option as well. Just went to a mechanic and he quoted 2000 CAD to rebuild the transmission. He also gives 23000K or 1 year warranty. It's not a Transmission shop. Do anyone know a good Transmission shop in Markham/North York area? Thanks for your help

If you don't want to spend a lot of extra money to buy a new car, it's not worth it to sell. Just get it replaced with a rebuilt one and drive it to the ground. I also have a 2000 3.2TL. I now replace the transmission fluid every year. With the exception of the transmission, it's been a very reliable car up to this point with very minimal issues other than typical maintenance items.
For me, because as a University student I had driven a 1988 Acura Legend (passed down to me) until it was 18 years old. Even at 18 years, it wasn't like the engine or transmission gave in - it just got to the point where there was one inconvenient couple hundred dollar component to replace after another plus the inconvenience of the problems occuring at the worst possible time (middle of the road, etc.). I would find it unacceptable for the TL to to not last nearly as long. At 12 years now, it's nothing. Car is just entering its prime. Haha.

Try to see if you can get a good will warranty out of it.

May want to check if there is a good will warranty on that model, it seems many Hondas did for 2000 tranny.

Is 1500 CAD a reasonable price to rebuilt the transmission? One mechanic quoted 1500 with 20,000 KM or 1 year warranty. I know he is a good mechanic, however, I would like to get your expert opinion. It's hard to sell the car with out fixing the transmission. If I don't fix it and sell to Salvage companies, how much I will be offered? The car is in great condition and I am feeling very sad to consider the option of selling it for Salvage companies. Appreciate your expert thoughts.

you can get one thats clean for 2000-3000$ with no tranny issue... yours is super high kms with blown tranny so like $500-1000 if you are lucky.
one option would be to put a used tranny in for maybe $600-700 if you are lucky (50/50 labour and a used part)..
but you are probably better off just dumping the car and buying something new

try giving this guy a call, ad lists $1,300 for a rebuilt tranny (http://ontario.kijiji.ca/c-cars-vehicles-cars-trucks-2003-Acura-TL-new-W0QQAdIdZ405634173). Let me know it goes as my 03 TL has 115KM on original tranny so one day I'll be calling around for a replacement

That is a very good deal. We had our Odyssey rebuilt for 3.5k. 3 year warranty though. If he is a trusted mechanic then i would just rebuild it, usually they do little mods like stronger clutch plates and coolers and stuff that will make it last longer.

$1500 is a good price for rebuilt with a 1year warranty. Standard price from respectable transmission companies start from $2000 with a one year warranty. Good Luck.

+1
A 12 year old car with 275,00km and a transmission that is ' shot '.
Since the OP is at a ' fish or cut bait ' moment in terms of whether to commit to this car or not, I'd ask his mechanic for an opinion as to whether - transmission issues aside - it's in good mechanical shape and worth hanging on to.
If the brakes and timing belt service has been recently done, it's got relatively new tires, and the engine is in good shape ( i.e not burning oil ) ...you can certainly make the case for hanging on to the TL......i.e. I'd think it should easily get to 400,00km without any further ' atypical ' issues cropping up.
But, if it gets a ' rebuilt ' transmission...I'd change 100% of the fluid every 50,000 km with ' synthetic ' fluid going forward.

@ 175K km i would probably do the rebuild. @ 275K km i would probably sell it for parts.

To OP ... is the A/C operational? If it is operational, what will you do if the A/C goes and needs a new compressor? What if sunroof leaks? Needs new motor? Power window problems?
Has alternator been replaced? When was battery last replaced?
Just a reminder more money may be needed down the road .... (don't think about how much in repairs have been put into the car ... think what if more money is needed.)
Most of us understand, at that age, anything can go.
