I new to purchase an ultralight (under 3.5 lbs) business class (Windows Pro) laptop with a built-in optical (DVD) drive. I'm looking at the Toshiba R930 or R830, but the screen resolution is only 1366 x 768.

I found a listing for a Sony Vaio model VPC-Z116GXS, with an optical drive, Windows Pro with screen res of 1600x900 and it weighs only 3.04 lbs. However, it is discontinued, and so far I've only been able to find a refurbished unit for sale.

Does anyone know how much better resolution the Sony laptop has vs. the Toshiba R830 or R930?

Does anyone know if there is a newer Sony laptop that replaced the VPC-X116GXS, with the same features and no heavier?

Does anyone know if the Toshiba R930's improvements over the R830 are significant and worth the extra $$$?

Thank you in advance for any information you're able to share!

hey bud,

you are going to have a tough time finding a brand new one because this was the first release of the VPC-Z series. I highly doubt anyone have an unopened one. i own the VPC-127 and have the 1920x1080 display. you will notice the things are sharper compared to a lower resolution display.

the latest iteration of Z is actually even lighter minus the discrete graphics card + optical drive as they are now located on the dock. i wish sony ditched the optical drive sooner because i find myself not using it except to do a clean install and it is just extra weight i am carrying around.
