Hi~ I've got some questions for insurance:
- what's the regular price of insurance for a beginner like me?
- what's the difference whether i'm under the insurance of my family or not ?

here's my info:
- I'm turning 18 in Sept. I'm getting G2 in Oct.
- I went to driving school and took the driving courses.
- I'm thinking of getting a used car for 3000-5000 dollars.

Thank you for your help!!! :D

Why don't you call some insurance companies?

Its going to be the same price you're thinking of paying for a car.
But.. costs that every year. :p
If you live with your parents, get on as secondary on theirs. Save getting your own car for a couple years.

Your location says Maple, so I am guessing Maple, Ontario.

I would expect your insurance to be upwards of $5K for your own insurance, quite the premium but we in Ontario are getting the short end.

Going as a second driver under your parents insurance I would expect premiums of about $1K per year. The driving course saves another 10 - 15%, however getting an 80 average in school will save you more that the course will. I put my 17 year old son who just passed his G2 a few months ago under my policy...total monthly for him with driving school, good grades, watching a insurance company video of driving accidents and his overall rate ended up being about $65 per month with all discounts.

It will be very costly if you are the primary driver... get one of your parents to be the primary and have them put you on as secondary...

Easiest thing to do is to use a calculator like:
http://www.insurancehotline.com/car-insurance-quotes/
https://www.belairdirect.com/
http://www.tdinsurance.com/products-services/auto-insurance/tdin-auto-index.jsp
etc.

Does "secondary driver" mean two people share one car, or they both have separate cars but under the same policy?

More drivers than cars.

wait, one more question:

if my car, which is under the policy of my parents, is involved in a accident, how much will the price of the whole policy rise? thx :)

Get a quote at Kanetix.ca - just use a fake name and email so you can try again with different combinations (ie. being primary driver or a secondary driver; having your G license instead of just your G2; etc...) Also try again a week later - the prices seem to fluctuate - I don't know why, they are just better some days than others.

Get insured under your parents

They charge you an arm and a leg, no matter what. I don't have many discounts, I'm 18 with my g2 and have been driving for about a year as a secondary driver on my parent's 2005 accord dx. I pay about $90 a month with Allstate. We never took advantage of any discount really. Probably multi-vehicle and that's about it.

By getting insured as a secondary driver you're paying a lot less since you're basically saying you only drive it on the odd occasion, meaning you're less of a risk. But I think you need one of those guys like cosmic from the insurance thread to give you a "textbook" answer.

Trust me, I feel your pain. I don't even have the motivation to go for my G since it's just saying, "oh, if you get this and wait a couple years, your insurance premiums will eventually become bareable." Getting the car is not a problem, getting affordable insurance is. When you end up paying for more than what's the car is worth yearly, it's really discouraging. In your search for a used car, don't even bother looking at it unless it has 4 cylinders and takes about 10 lifetimes to get up to highway speeds. What your best bet would be is to get a list of prospective vehicles (minding what I mentioned earlier ;P) and take them to your insurance agent and see what's cheap.

Assuming you are a male,

Secondary is usually $100 - $130
Primary is $550 to $1k

If you are going primary, TD and desjardins are your only choice

best thing is to call your parents broker and get a quote from her. :) they may have some family auto discount or something similar...
