what are the best brand laptops?
I heard Hp is popular but they overheat easily
and is benchmark a good site to see how fast the processor is by rank?

This is soo up for debate.
I really like IBM Thinkpad T series, Lenovo Thinkpad T or W Series and HP Elitebooks... These laptops aren't meant for gaming. The specs are more geared towards business users. But they will last long time and you can abuse the crap out of them.
Everything else I'm meh.
Overheating depends on what the specs the laptop is as well... I think Acer is worse for overheating though.
You should probably tell us your budget, what you want to do with it (specify programs) and the size of laptop you want (screen size) 14" 15" etc

Everyone will chime in with anecdotal stuff that is such a small sample.
I will say that there have been 7 HP laptops in my office, and every single one of them has broke.
I feel personally Dell makes the best bang for your buck with reliability for laptops. Especially when you start stepping up into their higher lines.
I use an MSI right now, only because it was the most fully loaded laptop I could find at that price point.

@Spray - do you use a ultrabook for work?

depends what it is you're after: bang for buck - acer, dell, hp, compaq, long lasting - Lenovo, dell, asus, brand name - sony viao, apple
of course those are just my personal rankings from my own bias. here's a list done by someone with more "scientific" approach:

I think it comes down to what specs you want and the price you are willing to pay.
I would say Asus is the best IMO, but if you want say a $400 to $500 lappy, then Asus wouldn't be in consideration.

I have an Asus monitor for my PC and I just wondered whether their laptops have horrible manuals too. I still can't figure out how to adjust the settings on this thing and we've had it for a year. My Dell Ultrasharp was very intuitive...this Asus one is not.

Top high quality laptop brands I recommend: Asus, Lenovo, Apple
Don't get HP, my friends HP battery lasts 5 min after 4 years
IMO Apple's warranty is the best, assuming you have an Apple store in your city.

i think brands matter less and less with computers.
i look at the individual product, rather than the brand.

Nope, my 2009 macbook pro lasts 3-5 hrs on medium brightness.
Well the 4 years above is a typo, should be 3, since all my friends got a laptop at around the same time as me.

How much battery life did he get when it was working?
Does your friend have the laptop on just as much as you do? Does he take care of the battery? (ie. Not leaving it plugged in 24/7 when 100%)

I've always been a Lenovo guy, but I may try an Asus for my next one. I really wish more companies would use the trackpoint though, I hate touchpads.
A bit of advice, opt out of a dedicated video card for your laptop. It'll make it hot enough to burn you, will drain power like you wouldn't believe, won't get updated as often as a desktop card, and won't be as powerful as one either. Intel graphics are decent enough for a lot of games nowadays.

@Piro21... The main reason for going Asus is the fact you can get good bang for buck dedicated video cards... (Or at least I think so)...

When they finally release a laptop with a i5 + GT 630m card combo they will be the best bang for your buck again. Currently, Lenovo and MSI are better for that with their offerings between the $900-$1400 range.

No, the main reason is that they are reliable. Also quite durable too, dropped my UL30 on concrete a few times and also fell out of my backpack once, still going strong! Just a little dent.

Apple's warranty costs $300, and doesn't even come CLOSE to matching that which ASUS gives free of charge!
Asus warranty is thus:
30 day Zero Bright Dot. (ONE dead pixel, and they replace the computer, in the first month.)
2 years (or 1, if a cheaper model) parts & labour, with free 2 way shipping (US/Canada), or walk in to their Markham facility.
1 year Accidental Damage - if you drop the computer, spill liquid on it, it's damaged via electrical surge, or from a fire - Asus will replace it FREE OF CHARGE in the first year.

Lenovo Asus MSI Sager Clevo are the tops.

Toshbia Acer HP
@OP, get a Clevo workstation... It'll cost you ~1-3K but the thing will be a POWER HOUSE
Eurocom and Reflex Notebooks sell them in Canada (so you can avoid duty / taxes from buying from USA).
Some of them can do SLI :D
EUROCOM Neptune 2.0 for example starts @ 1700ish before shipping & tax... It comes with GTX670M (can go up to as high as a 680M or 7890M) 17" I7 etc

Battery life usually depends on the laptop type, not the manufacturer. Most business class laptops or ultrabooks will give you the best battery life.

My top Brand is Asus. Very reliable and solid build. All my friends agree on it
Samsung is good too, my brother has one. Good price and specs
The worst would be HP. It kept getting screwed. Not only laptop, I had hp desktop, printer. All were bad and had the worst configurations(I did not know anything about building your own pc back then) Never gonna get any HP cr@p ever again.
