I chose this because i need a decent sized screen, decent processor, a very long lasting battery and the computer looks good. I plan to put an SSD into this and i already have a 4GB DDR3 laptop ram chip laying somewhere.

Lenovo Y580 is 2km thick lol.

I want something that is thin. I have a gaming tower (2500K + GTX 580). I dont put the emphasis on gpu power. More on the CPU and batt. life.

Mr. OP you don't need that kind of laptop if you have a rig

I think i do.
I need to take note fast in class (and be able to manage them correctly), have good batt. life and a non-ugly laptop. Also, i plan (hope ?) to keep it 4 years. After that i'll make 100k per year ya know :D

I have a ***** 10.1 Atom laptop and it just wont do it.

All the stuff you mentioned except ugly the Thinkpad will do much better...

"Extremely long battery life; Comfortable Precision keyboard; Solid performance; ThinkVantage apps useful and intuitive; Runs cool" (http://www.laptopmag.com/review/laptops/lenovo-thinkpad-t430.aspx)

" Great keyboard
15 hour battery life with 9-cell
Excellent build quality
Input/output port variety
"
http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=6504&review=lenovo+thinkpad+t430

edit: Personal experience. I have a Thinkpad T23 (father owned it) and a T43p (mine). Both are old laptops but the laptop hinge is still tight, battery life is okay (t23 only lasts 1 hour now but t43 can do 1:30) and the only parts I changed on both were ram keyboard and cpu coolers...

100% agree.

Okay.
What about a DELL then??

Love the XPS 13 but they are still on SAndy and they jacked up the price from 999 to 1099 for no reason ;/

Is there something wrong/not relatively perfect with the sony S series ?

Don't think it will matter much. You seem pretty much set on the Sony

edit: What about the T430s??

Some reviews state that the laptop you are about to buy are...

"If you want a pretty laptop that looks great in Internet cafes, the Sony Vaio S may not be for you. It’s not ugly, but there are clearly better-looking computers." (http://www.ubergizmo.com/2012/02/sony-vaio-s-review/)
"Weak audio; Mediocre battery life without slice" (http://www.laptopmag.com/review/laptops/sony-vaio-s-15-inch-vpcse16fx-b.aspx)
"Sony VAIO S Series: Mediocre Performance in a Thin, Sexy Chassis" http://www.pcworld.com/article/246233/sony_vaio_s_series_mediocre_performance_in_a_thin_ sexy_chassis.html

Well, idk. It the best i found yet (checked them for a week). Checked Acer's ultrabooks, Asus, Lenovo, Apple (lol), Dell etc and came to the conclusion that this S series 1.5 is the best deal out there.

From what i understand here its not a BAD deal.

Jeez... people! the Sony Vaio is expensive because of the weight! 2.0kg for 15.5"! 2.0kg is in portable(if not ultra) class already! You cannot compare apple with oranges! Thinkpad and the IdeapadY580 in the other hand weight > 5.5 pounds! huge differences!

Back to topic, I think it is a great deal considering Full HD + IPS screen (Y580 and thinkpad dont offer that!) It has a very wide viewing angle and nice screen! However, the Sony IPS is known to have orange gate problem which tends to display red as orange... some said minor some said major...

Graphics card is a bit weak compared to others but if you dont do a lot gaming you should be fine with that! and now you get a free battery which makes this a pretty solid deal

@OP. Is the T430s also not on your list?
you can go m-sata + enclosure battery + 6 cell (or 9 cell) + sata hard drive ...

edit: - the "s" mean it's thin

4.4lbs for a 15.5"...love the Sony S series as an alternative to the Lenovo Thinkpads especially with the price you are getting it for.

Edit: Just noticed the sheet battery weighs 1.35lbs, lol. Good thing its free.

I heard someone from other other thread you have 2 options:

Option 1) Free battery + 5% cashback
Option 2) Save $100 + 5% cashback

You just go to great canadian rebate to get your cash back... but you can only choose between battery or save $100 according to that person...
