View Full Version : How to pronounce "scion"?

Ok so this is totally random, but...
So I have been hearing people pronounce "scion" (the car, but is also an actual word) as "sigh-on", and various Google results also say this, but I all the audios files I have heard from dictionaries here (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/scion?s=t), here (http://www.howjsay.com/index.php?word=scion) and here (http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/scion) sound more like it rhymes with "lion" instead. The "sigh-on" pronunciation is especially stressed by Chinese speakers (not being racist, I am Chinese which is why I hear them the most) in commercials who really stress the "on" sound, so I just need to ask am I hearing things or does it actually rhyme with "lion"?

like 'science' i think.
What annoys me is the douchetards who think they are supposed to ignore "h"'s in names. Or those who think "gough" = "goff'.

I pronounce it SCI-on. You know, like the word and not the brand.

It's Sigh-On. But in Tomb Raider 1 it was pronounced "skee-on".

It is sigh on. Why would Toyota create a brand with "sigh" as it's first consonant is beyond me. With a name like sigh on, it is no wonder the brand is struggling.

Ya but I watch Nissan commercials and they say "Nee Saan" and I don't like that pronounciation. "Nih San" for me :-P

But I want to post pad so I will tell you that I pronounce it "Sigh-On".
And I pronounce Nissan "Nee-saan" even though I actually prefer it being pronounced by others as "Niss-an".

I've always pronounced the T, which I think is the Brit/Canadian way. SHE seems to be the American (and parts of Southern Ontario ;)) way.
Other mentionables:
I refuse to pronounce Asus like Dr Seuss. I want to hear that Taiwanese chick say Pegasus, as a point of reference.
I refuse to pronounce Linux the common way, preferring to say it the same way I say Linus (or the same way as Torvalds says his name). Funny thing is that Torvalds changed his mind on how to pronounce Linux, now opting for Lynn-ix.
Looking at the word, I would have said it was PSI-on, but it seems that this is wrong.

How about Nikon.....
Nye-kon or Nee-kon ?
Or Nick-on.
That's why you should just stick to Canon, although I'm sure there'll be someone who wants to say "Caynon" just to make sure things don't work properly.

Nye-kon.
Did you guys know that people in Canada/US say Adidas "wrong?" The emphasis should be on the first syllable: A-di-das (and not a-DI-das).
