Got a call from someone inviting me to an open house at DirectBuy in Pickering? (Kinda feels like being invited to check out a timeshare.)

Has anyone been to one of these or is a member? Anyone know if it's worthwhile? They don't give you any information in advance, some kind of top secret information that can only be revealed to people that are "seriously" interested.

Apparently if they tell you the kinds of deals you can get, nobody would want to buy retail again and I guess that would be a bad thing because everyone would want to join.

Do a google search on them and their business practices. You're bang on with the timeshare analogy(sp). The y make it sound so attractive until yopu hear the cost of membership and actually realize there are no bargains to be found.

You're far better off sending RFD a few sheckles to continue the huge savings found here.

All I've been told by people in the past is to avoid them! They use sneaky tactics to make you join, then to make you buy once you've joined. Good deals are not to be had though they make it sound like it.

SCAM, SCAM, SCAM. SCAM and eggs. Pork and SCAM. Ham and SCAM! There membership fees are around $2000!!! They will not leat you see what you can buy at their "discount" prices until you fork over tha cash and join. If/when they call do as did: accept their invitation. Say yess you are still going to go when they call 3 more times to confirm, And don't show up. You are saving yourself and some other poor soul who may have taken your spot if you hung up.

Is this the same DirectBuy that gives you access to goods at wholesale prices?

My friend's family is part of the DirectBuy group. They said it was really worth it for them, since they did some home renovation and saved thousands on renovating and appliances. The only downside about it is that your selection is limited to their affiliated manufacturers.

Yep, if you want a response that's more useful than a knee-jerk "ripoff" reaction then look for one of the several other threads. One of them actually has my lengthy impressions.

Then I'll do a Google search and read the hundreds of complaints about this company that suggest, yes it is, in fact, a scam.

I was recently employed with Directbuy Hamliton/Niagara, Ill save you the time and the 4200 membership fee! They are a scam! They only get people that are stupid and have money! The way they talk about prospect customers is degrading and direspectful! Do NOT and i mean DO NOT attend an open house! And if you not trust these words, please visit www.Ripoffreport.com. Type in Directbuy, you'll find your answers!

i doubt it... in the rare case some ppl do save money.. but i bet the ppl that it is worth while for is less then 1%

I should have known about Redflagdeals before I decided to join DirectBuy.
I'm having nothing but problems with this company and now I have a 3rd party calling my house everyday for outstanding dues.

The problem started when we attended an open house and it was too good to be true. We were moving to a new home so we figured we can save by buying thru DirectBuy. The prices offerd by the Rep was amazing. The headache started when we tried to purchase furniture at the price that was given to us by the DirectBuy rep, we were told that the quoted price was incorrect. Right there I decided to try and cancel this membership. I've been trying to cancel it for 6 mths now, with no headway. Never used it and we've gotten all our appliances and furniture at competitive prices. I've now forwarded all documentation including the different price quotes (including the one handwritten by a Sales rep) to the Ministry of Consumer affairs. The Ministry cannot force Directbuy to cancel the contract, but they can mediate a solution. If this does not work, then it's off to small claims court to state my case. I'm not going to pay $4000.00 for a set price I never got nor for a service I never never used. I got duped. I know one person in BC won a judgement against Directbuy.

Im a member (mother signed me up :) )...take advice from actual members.

Directbuy is a hit or miss....would only recommend it if your moving to an unfurnished home that needs major renovations or a custom house being built from the ground up.

She became a member because one purchase would save enough to buy the membership. She's been eyeing this Ashley bedroom set selling @ Ashley for 11 grand. Best she could do was haggle them down to 10 grand I believe. Drove to Directbuy and ask them for the direct price on this bedroom set (exact same serial number) or else she wouldn't buy the membership. Didn't need to haggle, price was 6 grand and 1 grand shipping and taxes or something...7 grand total.

You do really get direct prices but they dont have much variety in companies.

IMO, We've broken even so far with our membership...1 Ashley bedroom set, 2 Samsung LCD TV. Plus we're lifetime members, so we can always go in browse.

Anyways, make the decision for yourself...go in and be demanding....make sure you know retail prices with serial numbers so you can compare. You really have to buy a lot from their limited selections to make your money back. I would say you got a choice of around 2-5 different companies depending on what product you looking at. For televisions...Samsung, Panasonic, Toshiba and some wal-mart brands.

If you aint satisfy or cant find that one big savings purchase like my mother...dont sign up. Hope that helps...

Yeah I wouldn't go out calling it a "SCAM SCAM SCAM", but I would definitely read through everything and see if it's the right program for you, see what they have to offer.
It's not for everyone. Some people enjoy not doing much to get a deal. Others hunt in the flyers day and night for a washer (or what have you) so its just a difference in shopping altogether.
