A monopod is not meant to support the camera in a free standing mode. It is mostly used to support big, long and heavy lenses while being stabilized by the operator.

A monopod is just for additional support especially if you have a heavy/long lens. And it's definitely lighter to carry, and helps you stabilize the camera for longer exposures.
I don't find it that useful....if I'm going to need support, I'd rather lug my tripod around.

usually lenses come with tripod mounting, that way you mount a lens and not a camera. Monopods are useless then
I've seen a guy shooting with just a monopod a few weeks ago at baseball game. I think they are less heavy and easiers to carry around.

Go to Vistek. Good service there.
Merkles has'em too. But I find the sales people there tend to be greasy.
A good monopod will cost you $70 - $120 to start. On top of that you may want a ball head (Really Right Stuff makes a good one) and couple of mounting plates for various lenses.

IN photography, it's for a really big ass lens, like this

so that you don't break your wrist while waiting for wildlife/fast sports/whatever actions. :)
