And did anyone watch the finale of School Days yet?

I mean holy crap... here I thought kiminozo was a messed up anime, but this just takes the cake. And what was with the ending clip anyways?

I'd have to disagree with that. Gurren Lagann was amazing when it first started out, but then developed into just a "good series."

Even though it's not finishing up in 2007, my vote for this year's best series is ef - A Tale of Memories.

Exactly... she was bound to snap, but I didn't expect her to snap THAT badly... it was like: shy girl -> denial -> corpse chopping homicidal zombie psycho...

Turns out the finale was delayed because of this: "The day before the final episode was scheduled to air, a sixteen-year-old girl killed her father with an axe in Kyoto. In response, TV Kanagawa replaced the episode, which was known to contain similarly violent material, with half an hour of scenery and classical music to avoid association with the murder."

Baccano was a brilliant series. It's the Pulp Fiction of anime.

Also, the latest episode of ef was, once again, incredible. I'm very surprised this series isn't getting much love. Do people not enjoy masterful cinematography and directing these days? This is easily the most artistically creative series I've ever seen.

I really don't like what Bleach is doing right now. I really don't find any point in those 3 side characters. I hope I'm wrong but they just annoy me and have very little to do with the current story. It seems they're just using them to stretch the show even more.

Kanon
Rurouni Kenshin
Shura no Toki
Tokimeki
Gundam 00
Gundam X
Gundam W
Gundam 0083
Gundam G - (a little different from the other, but still pretty good)
Gundam Z
Robotech: The Macross Saga -( Only this saga is good, imo)
Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien - (Sad story..sort of, great anime for girls? lol)
Evangelion - (the ending was wacked, I didn't really get it)
Tactical Roar -(Modern Warship type)
RahXephon - (Very interesting storyline)

and many more that I couldnt think of at the moment

Umm well since ur posting this here, I think you just want to dl anime and not movies.

Steps:
1. Get IRC and configure the options ie) Nick name and exceptions.
2. Go to www.anidb.net
3. Find the anime you want using the search tab
4. Find the group you want to dl the anime from (on anidb)
5. There will be an IRC link on anidb for the group in question, click it and it will send you directly to the irc channel
6. Go to the server window and register with the server. Typical syntax is
/msg nickserv register PASSWORD EMAIL
just use a fake email
7. Under the topic of the channel, they may supply you with a bot list (URL). If not then go to the groups web site and they should have one there.
8. If you don't know where the bot list is, you can ask in the channel, just don't spam or you will be Banned!
9. Using the bot list, you can find what pack a particular file is listed and what server you want to download it from.
10 Dl the file using the syntax
/msg SERVER NAME xdcc send #PACKNUMBER

Some channels use
/ctcp SERVER NAME xdcc send #PACKNUMBER

Thats about it.

Small Tutorial: Say I want to find Blood+ eps. I went on anidb and searched it (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=3186) and say I want SHS releases so you click on SHS name and get (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=group&gid=495). Next click on the irc link (#Shinsen-Subs@irc.rizon.net). Register with Rizon.net by going to the other window and type /msg nickserv register PW EMAIL. Now I can send messages in the channel and request packs from bots. In the channel Under the topic (the text which pops up automatically) you will see ( XDCC Bots: http://bot.page.us) So go there and search blood+ there is also a hot link for it. Say I want to dl ep one from the Sheska chan bot ... so I go to the window and I type /msg SHS|Sheska-chan xdcc send #57 and thats about it :D.

Lots of paid services (dunno about this particular one) use uncapped speeds (or at least high caps) on transfers. So they can be MUCH faster than torrents and the likes. Also, unlike torrents, they don't require you to upload/share anything. Personally I find free to be the best even if it's slower but I'm always looking out for a good deal on a cheap, uncapped, unlimited newsgroup service.

Been watching Gundam 00 lately, and honestly, I can't stand it, I don't know if anyone can even call the main characters (Celestial Beings) protagonists, they just decide to kill any groups who seem to start any trouble. Maybe it's just the Gundam pilots who have been designed to be emo and totally messed up (an even more extreme of GundamWing pilots) that this series doesn't appeal to me.

Maybe it's just the Gundam pilots who have been designed to be emo and totally messed up (an even more extreme of GundamWing pilots) that this series doesn't appeal to me.

Why must the main characters be protagonists?

Why must the main characters be protagonists?

Why wouldn't they be? I only made that assumption because most animes or Gundam series have the main characters as protagonists. Maybe I'm wrong.

Perhaps they are protagonists by acting as enemies to all the 3 major factions and acting as a scapegoat to unite all the factions. I don't know, just a wild-shot speculation.

Celestrial Being is a group that is designed to get everyone in the world to hate them, hence all of the 3 groups down on earth will unite together and kill off Celectrial Being.

Death Note's main character wasn't a protagonist.

I've only watched a few episodes, but I had under the impression that he believed he was doing the right thing, by killing off criminals.

Unfortunately, when he started to kill off people who were trying to reveal his identity, he claims that the ends justify the means.

The story will probably progress as the Celestial Being group being hunted down or appear hunted down.

I just hope that they'll introduce more decent looking non-Gundam mobile suits.

You should check out the manga for Gantz, it's 10x better than the anime. The anime was produced during the early stages of the manga, and ran out of material to follow on, hence the weird ending. Currently the manga for Gantz is at Vol. 22 and is still ongoing.

For those who like to buy their dvds I recommend RightStuf.com and dvdpacific.com (make sure you email them special instructions about mailing to canada). I like owning boxsets and their prices are pretty good. -sg

Episode 16 is being released by a subtitle group this Sunday and probably uploaded onto veoh.com by Monday.

I heard it's a different faction of the Celestial Beings, hopefully a group that doesn't see conflict in black and white and kill everyone in sight.

Although that fact that the 3 new gundams are with German names makes it sound odd.

slightly off topic, instead of anime, I'd like to ask about manga.

Here's the story, I think every kid that grew up in the 90's has played street fighter when it was all the rage. I've gotta admit that I've played it too, but I got bored of the game pretty quickly.

Years pass and I see arcades with newer versions of Street Fighter, game consoles come out with new versions ...

(Super) Street Fighter 1, 2, 3 and now there's 4 coming, Alpha series, EX series, Zero series, etc. ... loads of this stuff and I have no clue who half the characters are.

Can anyone recommend some manga that tells the story behind the characters? Maybe someone could sort through all the series and list what order they came out? and their chronological order in the story?

Yeah, I've gotten older, and I no longer want to play the games, I only want to read about them :D

I'm not to sure if theres adequate SF manga as most of the story behind the Street Fighter characters has revolved around the games themselves. I feel the same way you do however, I continued to play the games, but not at the Pro level though sometimes I do attend Tourneys in Canada and watch the Pros of Canada duke it out with the USA guys. If I were u I'd just wiki the chars in order to get background stories. Street fighter anime in general is terrible! As for the versions there was the familiar SF II then came the Alpha series and then came 3rd strike (2 other sf's came out prior to this but weren't played that much and didn't receive attention, 3rd strike was just the last of this seres, kinda analogous to SFII to SFII Turbo etc.) and now SF 4 which is like a continuation of the SF II series I think. I think that you would only be interested in researching just the Alpha series. If u were a fan of the old games then might I point out that Capcom is releasing SF II HD remix (PS3//X360) which is a re-work of SF II but in HD with new sprites! The remake is going to have a summer release along with the release of SF 4 in Arcades for Japan.

I watched Appleseed Ex Machina on Blu-Ray on the weekend, along with the 2004 re-make of the original in 720P. Both were great, but *WOW* was Ex Machina good!! The visuals were amazing, and the story was far more compelling I think.

I think I'm very quickly becoming addicted to anime on Blu-Ray

I thought the story for Ex Machina kinda sucked. It didn't give much insight to the bad guy's background. It was just another one of those "unite everyone into one" kind of plots.

Are there other BD anime coming out?

I heard Escaflowne and Bebop movies were, but there's no series?

Aside from Haruhi, most shows looked like ass even when it's upscaled on a 1080p TV.

2004 movie spoiler ahead

I found Ex Machina's plot more forgiving than the first movie's. I really balked at the first movie with its silly "Let's castrate all of humanity with a fogging machine-thing" plot twist.

Sure, it's not canon at all, but if they keep making more Appleseed movies (or the new anime) like this, I'm all for it.

For those wondering what the extra manga is for the 2-disc collector's from Best Buy, it's just the "Called Game" chapter from the Appleseed Databook. Nothing spectacular.

Most TV series don't have enough animation detail to warrant 1080p. A lot of anime is broadcasted in 720p and they look fantastic already. Aside from the select few such as Ergo Proxy and Ghost in the Shell, most series don't benefit from 1080p.

Plus, if you're upscaling standard definition stuff, it's bound to look like crap.

The plot twist is good and the animation is excellent but I don't really like the Trans-Am level-up Exia just got (too soon perhaps).

Not too soon I don't think since Gundam 00 is split into two seasons. Ends at ep.24 and continues later this year I believe. There is still a lot of plot to be developed.

Also SPOILER: The full potential of the GN Drives is opened to all of the Gundams now, as in Virtue, Dynames, Kyrios as well. Guess we will have to see what special abilities they get as well. But there has to be something to differentiate the Gundams from the others..otherwise why would they be Gundams?

D.Gray-Man has picked up tremendously since the crappy fillers ended. Although the pace is a bit slow and some scenes are getting repetitive (eg. the hammer attack seals), this has become one of the shows I look forward to every week. Allen Walker's new form is pretty badass. This stage of the series is very reminiscent of DBZ, where Goku comes back from his first trip to the afterlife with a power level of OVER 9000!! Allen Walker comes back from the grave and is obviously many times more powerful than before.

Felt and Co. survive, and obviously the mechanic guy is there.
They got Exia's drive... maybe they made it in time to get the pilot. The relationship b/t the super soldiers got interesting, so that may not be the last time we see them.

yea, none of the characters "officially died" so they can bring back whoever they want. so it's safe to assume all the characters except lockon will show up at some point in season 2.

i must say, this is one of the best gundam series i've watched. it wasn't predictable, there weren't annoying characters like shinn in GSDestiny, and they finished season 1 with finish but left a whole lot of plot left for a season 2. now comes the long wait.

CNAnime, perhaps? I've never been to that one. It's on August 22-24 this year.

its not the greatest imo.. b/c it is mixed with gaming/horror and sci-fi there is less of "anime" stuff to do. It is also more expensive. If you are not into the rest of the stuff shown you might get a bit bored. Last year there was an announcement about the return of re-boot and i found that interesting! Aside from the screenings and some autograph signings there is not that much anime presence. Thats just what I thought. Gaming was awesome since there are alot of halo tourney's and GH3 competitions it kept me occupied quite well. If you are just strictly into anime i would recommend just to go for 1 day

Last year's cnanime was an exception, since there were WCG canada qualifiers being held there, and that was definitely a surprising sight.

that took up half of the dealers room!

Do you guys actually think Anime North is still worth it? $40 entrance fee for a bunch of fanmade events/skits which you have to line up early to get tickets for which usually reach capacity first thing in the morning.. marked up prices in the dealers table... I probably spent most of my day watching anime in the theatre of series I wasn't interested in or already had seen before, all.. Do you guys think it's worth this price they keep hiking every year?

I kind of felt it would have been more worth it just hanging around in the parking lot between the double tree hotel and convention to check out all the costumes and take pics for free.. lol..

man i think there is alot of offer for $40

- J RAVE!
- Samurai Jack
- Death Note Pannel
- Current Gen RPGs
- How to Get A Con Girlfriend
- Excel Saga
- Megaman/Rockman
- Shopping In Tokyo
- A k i r a
- Jpop Dance Party
- How to Paint Warhammer
- ALL NIGHT HENTAI!!!!
- HaruHaru Dance Contest
- Basics of Japanese
- UFO Doll Workshop
- DS vs PSP Bring Yours

Most of the stuff i went to and it kept me busy.
I enjoy going to panels and the "shopping in tokyo" panel was very informative
Most of the stuff is "free" so i think that you get your worth.
Regarding dealers, yes it is true that you can find some VERY overpriced stuff there.
Ex. Blinking BR Collar = $100! /rolls eyes!
POCKY IS OVERPRICED!
RAMUNE IS OVERPRICED!
... basically any food item!

But it is great for manga expecially when u buy alot.
You can find some great deals on dvd's and some anime merchandise, just gots to look around.

Honestly where i found awesome deals was at the flea market on sat night. my buddy bought a shizzle load of bleach manga for ~70 it worked out to around $6.50 per book and there were LBNIB

so that will happen in the Anime...once Sasuke comes back..they should just rename the whole series cause Naruto is no where in sight

I could not stop laughing at your comment, because this happened to me. I was at Energize IT (free Microsoft conference), which was the exact same day, at the exact same location, in the exact same building, as Anime North. Upon finishing up the conference, I walked into the parking lot, and spent the next couple hours looking at people's costumes, talking with a friend who went to AN, etc.

While it wasn't intentional, the fact that I witnessed half of AN for free is kinda funny.

I find that Anime North is a flat-out social event. If you're looking to meet people or meet people you know with similar interests, its there for you.

One problem I have, is that the Japanese guests become less and less interesting every year. I remember years back we were lucky enough to have Hikaru Midorikawa (Heero from Gundam Wing, Masaki from Super Robot Wars) come in. Now, its just yawn every year.

Same. I find the guests at AN to be more and more disappointing with each passing year, and the thing is that we're paying more for the passes each yr, so you'd think we'd be getting better guest, but nope...

The new school rumble (san gakki) is 2 part OVA
which are ep 25 and 26 (if they had a full tv series considering they had summaries of the first 24 episode on the website)

Will they made ep 1~24 is still unknown.

story wise, 00 is a hell of a lot better than SEED. out of all the gundam series i've watched, 00 has the best plot of all of them, and can easily compare to any other series w/o the gundams. it's definitely worth watching. in other gundam series, the stories seem to go all over the place, there is always at least one annoying character, and people don't die. not so in 00's case.

The best part I think about 00 is that people (who play a somewhat leading role) actually die. =)

Thanks!

To be honest I never thought I would be the type of person to read comic books but this manga is great, I think im up to Volume 20 right now.....it feels just like the anime.

the build up to the next arc is dragging for me...but I know some wierd sh^t is coming soon

The new Nodame Paris series started up and is now at Episode 7. Still very entertaining with great music and very funny! Anyone else watching this? A new series that I started watching is Kannagi. Seems to be a lot of people checking it out. I've only seen the first episode so far and it has promise.

Not sure if anyone follows Naruto...but it appears that Dattebayo is dropping the project. Go to their site for further info!

Welcome this is special edition of Dattebayos feedback forum, which is dedicated to answering your burning questions regarding our announcement that we will be dropping Naruto as of 1/15/09. Thank you to the thousands of people who have sent letters of support in the last week. The staff is still reading through all the messages we have received, but you can be assured that each and every one of them will be read.

First of all, wed like to clarify a few things. TV Tokyo has announced that it will begin streaming English subtitled Naruto Shippuuden via Crunchyroll approximately one hour after it airs in Japan (that would be sometime early Thursday morning EST) on January 8, 2009. This service will not be free, but will most likely require a subscription or a small fee per episode. According to ANN, this service will be worldwide. After a week, the episodes will be available for free. (Read more here.)

Viz Media has also announced that it will begin streaming free English subtitled Naruto Shippuuden episodes a week after airing via their official site Naruto.com as well as the services Joost and Hulu. This will begin January 15, 2009. These episodes will be free. In order to get viewers caught up to the current episode, Viz will be releasing 8 Naruto Shippuuden episodes, starting with episode 1, every Friday starting on January 2, 2009 via the aforementioned services. (Read more here).

This answers 85% of the questions weve received over the last week, including Will the episodes be subbed or dubbed?, Why arent you going to keep subbing so we dont have to wait 91 weeks for the official subs to catch up?, Will the subs be available outside the US?, and Could you give us more information about what sites we will be able to view these official versions at?

Now that thats out of the way, here are answers to some of the other questions/comments weve received in the last week.

Dattebayo's information regarding Naruto is true.... I don't see any reason why they would continue to sub the episodes if Viz is going to offer them. They can focus on their other projects.

Ga-Rei Zero is pretty good. Their first episode is the best so far of any anime I have watched. It kinda drops after that.

I thought Gundam 00 is not bad, but it's a kind of dumbed-down Wing for the masses.

- Who the hell do you think I am? / My drill is a drill that will pierce the heavens. => all around amazing, in my top 3.
- mushishi - beautiful stunning artwork, with 1 short story per episode, creative plot
- kino no tabi - short stories, very enjoyable
- GTO - hilarious and addictive
- Code geass is always good - always ends in cliff hangers with great/decent plot and lots of interesting surprises
- nodame cantabile - drama/romance will music theme, nice character development
- honey and clover 1 and 2 - drama/romance with excellent character development, leaving you with a bittersweet taste
- Ouran high school host club - hilarity ensues
- Xam'd lost memories - watching this right now, decent action, the ending is difficult to predict at this point
- Rahxephon - mecha/romance, one of my old favorites, great graphics
- planetes - sci-fi/drama, great series all around

- Too many to mention

They are not necessarily favorites, but each are great for different reasons.

SEED (50eps)
SEED Destiny (50eps)
00 (1st season 25 eps, 2nd season airing now)

Destiny is the followup to SEED so you would want to watch SEED before Destiny.

00 is unrelated to SEED, and is much much better imo so I would start by watching that. 00 is on episode 14 (second season) at the moment.

Is Gurren part of the Gundam franchise or are you just recommending a different anime to watch in place of SEED?

For either SEED or 00 do I need to have some knowledge of the Gundam universe? (or how is accessible is the show for a regular anime fan to get into?).

I know there are OVAs that summarize what happened in SEED and SEED Destiny. I suppose they are a good alternative to watching 100 episodes :P

I know there's also side stories (SEED Astray, there's a blue astray and red astray if that's what you meant) but I think that is manga only. There was also a 3ep sidestory called Stargazer.

But definitely watch 00, it actually has a good story. You don't need knowledge of gundams to watch it, other than knowing it's all about mecha blowing stuff up :P It's an addictive show.

gundam seed, watchable
seed destiny, *shudders. just a continuation purely for the sake of milking it. case in point, the protagonist becomes abandoned in the plot, characters from gundam seed is brought back, gets killed, continues to be biggest badass ever. basically the nightmare of every english teacher out there.

00 does a lot better job developing plots. it has some plot holes but not obvious ones. definitely a anime to watch.

gurren lagann is quite a deviant from established anime norms. if you feel like watchout something that keeps you on your seat all the time, then Gurren Lagann is definitely an anime to watch. And gurren Lagann is mecha. if you're trying to equate mecha to gundam, then sorry you have failed.

gurren lagann was an awesome show, i watched it while it was being aired in Japan. A must watch if you ask me.

Super Stokey, "Big O" is another mecha series albeit not a very good one and aired on YTV.

As well

Rahzephon, Evangelion, samurai 7(to an extent), battletech(based on the mechwarrior series and is american), Zone of the enders and Dual all have some mechs in them. Some of them take the lead, while others use it to serve as just machines. Check out some trailers and see what you think.

I would highly recommend the site myanimelist.net (http://myanimelist.net) for those of you looking for recommendations and such. They have a really good/complete database with ratings of fansubs for each anime, as well as user reviews, and recommendations (ie. if you liked deathnote, then 14 users recommend watching ___, etc.). It also allows you to keep track of your anime progression, and add anime to a 'plan to watch' list, but it's a much better system than ANN for those that use it.

It's possibly the most complete site when it comes to anime that i've come across, with a good community.

(no, i am not affiliated with the site in anyway other than being a regular member).

I saw that short ad for the new FMA after Gundam 00. The animation (or just some action/motion scenes) seem quite different from the 1st series. Anyone else notice that? Like a rounder face for Ed.

Is there anything else known about this series? There is definitely no continuity from the 1st one (happy ending, sort of), so I'm curious if it will follow more closely to the manga or not.

:arrowu:
there's the answer... btw, anyone who read the FMA manga, does it seem like the story is winding down? Someone who follows it told me there's only a few more chapters left in the manga..

I'm trying to figure out if the anime might once again catch up to manga like it did in the first series :S.. last thing I want to see are fillers and slowdowns.. or a 3rd ending different from the manga lol

Just finishing up baccano, holy crap it is violent. Good story line but far to violent for me. If it was toned down i would recommend it.

I also polished off Nodame cantabile, paris arc - very good in my opinion.
The clannads - the first series felt very typical however the later episodes in the second series are really good. I have not finished the last 3 or 4 of them however.

Hajime no ippo, the new challenger is looking very good at the moment and i am quite intrigued at Ride Back. I thought the premise is cheesy, but watching the hd version on my projector is making me dig it for some reason.

When i find nodame i will prob buy it as well as the first series of hajime no ippo the next time it goes on sale.

Any other anime you guys are finding on going that is above average?

New season out now...

Recently watched Baccano, Spice and Wolf, first ep of FMA and K-ON. All are great!

Baccano is yeah, pretty confusing and violent, probably have to watch it again. I also love how the couples in the show come up, lol. My fav in terms of driving the show is Miria and Isaac... Firo and Ennis also are :o

It's starting again from the beginning, this is the MANGA storyline (the first 10-15 eps follow similar plot to the first anime but will branch off completely into a different story later.

Also, does anyone know of any good sites for Full Metal Alchemist news, so I can at least keep track of stuff going on with sub releases and news? I only have fullmetal-alchemist.com but it's kind of crappy since they make updates every blue moon.. ie. something like narutofan.com.. google doesn't really give many good sites.

As for the new series this year

Cross Game looks interesting. That accident came pretty quick in this series.

Basquash looks awesome. Story line is prob going to be predictable, however the visuals are breath taking.

K-on i am neutral.

Shangri - La looks nice as well and something i am interested in

I would never download anime in rmvb format unless that is the only format available for that series. Some rmvb files are encoded at a very high bitrate, though.

As someone who currently works in a fansubbing group, I know all about the whole Xvid vs MKV debate. The general consensus is to switch over to MKV, because it prevents having an encoder do a show numerous times. One of the encoders I work with had to do four encodes for a single episode, because of people complaining that their computers couldn't handle it.

In my testing, however, it is not difficult to play MKV files. I managed to get a bunch of 1280x720p MKV files to play smoothly, without any dropped frames, on a Celeron 900. Considering that everyone here has to have a faster computer than that, I'd say that it's not exactly a huge problem. If you have something worse than that (hint: some models of Pentium 3's easily surpass this), then I'm afraid you're on your own. To be honest, if you're using something with less than 900mhz, you could easily upgrade to such a benchmark for free, using parts available in your nearest dumpster.

Getting videos to play at that low speed only requires two things; CoreAVC and thread elevation. The first one will cost you $15 (or internets for free), and the second one means that you won't be able to do any multitasking while watching anime. You can set up CoreAVC with Media Player Classic, which will allow you to view all subtitles, and your computer won't blow up.

Considering that the Celeron 900 I used came from an Asus Eee 701, which currently goes for under two hundred at the BST, I'd say that it's high time to upgrade if your computer can't play stuff back. Besides, the slower your computer is, the longer it takes to release an episode of a show. Four encodes usually take about an entire day, and that means no other releases can go through.

make sure you extract subtitle first before you do conversion.

You need to hardsub the subtitles into the video. MKV files are a container that has a text file, and the raw video. When you encoder to mp4, you need to set it to take the English subtitle track and embed it into the video.

What about the audio track?
I have the first episode of Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood in mkv format with both Japanese and Cantonese dub tracks. When I converted that to MP4, it only had the Japanese track. I currently use Xilisoft Video Converter Ultimate to make MKV->MP4 conversions. Still kinda new to the program.

You also need to specify the audio track to use, when encoding.

MKV can contain multiple audio tracks, but not MP4. So you need to pick the one you want to use in the videos.

find the mkvtoolnix gui and it comes with something that allows you to open the mkv and extract the subtitle(srt or .ass). Once you've extracted it, put it in the same folder as the mkv file and give them the same name.

Under Xilisoft, I believe there is an option for it to load subtitles. I've never tried it though because I just use mkv2vob in order to watch on my ps3.

Naah, I think it's better off this way, as we're a relatively tiny subgroup of users that don't post a ton in here... we just like to pop in every now and then to check up on news and stuff.

If we had a subforum it'd probably be whole lot of tiny threads with maybe a few replies at most and it's not like the thread is a huge mess to begin with. The conversation is mostly linear, and we're all good boys that don't misbehave

Just finished up salaryman kintaro.

To sum it up, i really enjoyed it.

The show felt like GTO but with a white collar worker instead of a teacher with the main guy not being a perv. I will say that the couple shots of nudity were not needed and really detracted from the show in my opinion. I am surprised this show has not been mentioned more. I just happened to come across it by accident.

Hey guys Ive been reading through this thread looking for suggestions but I think ive hit a road block, I cant really find anything I like. Can you guys post your top 10 anime mini series. I have alot of free time this summer.

Here are my top 10, if your favs are included in my top 10, then just add another one. Remember, Im looking for suggestions. These are probably not the best ever made but this is my style. I like something serious, with some humor but most of all action. I started watching Love Hina but after the 2nd episode I just didnt care what happened next.

Cowboy Bebop
Samurai Champloo
Trigun
Black Lagoon
Gantz
Wolfs Rain
Code Gease
Deathnote
Elfen Lied
Devil May Cry (not the best but its my style)
Bonus: Ghost in the shell

I'm also interested in Vexille, but have heard bad things from review sites, so I'm a little leary.

Bought Vexille on Blu-ray. Verdict? I should have listened to the reviews... =.=

The one word that sums up this movie is forgettable. Forgettable characters, forgettable story, and forgettable presentation.

Seriously, there are 8-bit video game villains with more oomph and plausibility than the bland-as-manila-envelope bad guy in Vexille. You know that point where something is so bad that it becomes good? We're way past that here. The villain is just plain terrible, through and through. On top of that, try as I might, I not once felt an ounce of care for what happened to any of the protagonists in the film. There are attempts at love, humour, and tragedy, but they all feel incredibly flat and clichd.

Story: Obsession with machine/tech augmentation could lead to the downfall of humanity. If that sounds awfully familiar, it's because it is. It's been done, and it's been done better. Poor execution, bursting with implausibilities, and an incredibly choppy delivery.

The sole redeeming quality of Vexille may be its interesting visual style. But even here, it seemed to me that the film looks better in stills than in action. There's something off about the animation in the film, probably because it's all CG (correct me if I'm wrong). While action sequences are fine, subtler details like walking or facial gestures appear stiff and graceless at times.

Do yourself a favour and avoid this one - or if you must, rent it. I should have just waited for the remastered Ghost in the Shell Blu-ray release.

Eva 1.11 is very good movie and it is very well to recap on about first 1/4 of the TV series plus much more detail drawing on everything. I am so looking forward Eva 2.X coming this summer and hope it will on the BD very soon.

The newest ep. of Haruhi is outed and I am kind of piss about that. 3 new eps. and it is like rerun every same dialog on last 3 NEW eps.. It is even more annoying than Naruto fillers.

Just finished watching Bakemonogatari and I am kind of like it.

Not too many new July series left and kind of hope the Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 will be a good show.

A few shows I watched in the last little while:

Macross Zero
-great animation (with the budget to match no doubt) with an interesting premise. There's a bit of that mystical kludge often found in anime to keep the plot moving but overall this was a pretty good ova.

Macross F
-an indirect sequel to Macross Zero. Not as flashy as the OVA, but the animation is still quite impressive. Ultimately I did not like this series. It ripped off too many elements from Macross, and the enemy was almost a clone of the Invid (for you Robotech fans). The entire 'songs used as a weapon' was pretty lame imo.

I think I'm done with Bleach. I'm sick and tired of their fillers and how they just stop right after a climax and move into something totally different.

To me One Piece is still king right now. They keep the story fresh even when they show fillers. Also, they only spend about 2 eps on fillers. I'm really enjoying the current arc.

The new Full Metal Alchemist rocks. It's really developing the story much more which makes sense as it's following the Manga. I really hope they don't do something stupid like the original series.

May Chang has a surprisingly cute voice even when dubbed in Cantonese. Waiting to see more as TVB airs it in Hong Kong. Currently watching it subbed in English first, then re-watching it dubbed in Cantonese.

Other than that, "Ponyo on the cliff by the sea" is also out on DVD in Pacific Mall and with English subs. Been watching it again and again this weekend. Great movie but I've kinda gotten sick of the movie at this point. Don't know if I'd even bother to watch it on the big screen next week.

The only new ones I can think of are Blade of the Immortal and Sengoku Basara. Blade of the Immortal was good overall, but had a poor ending with a lot of loose ends. Sengoku Basara is just pure eye candy, and very little plot or character development, so it's comparable to DBZ.

There is no doubt a huge gap left it open at the end of Air Gear TV and I guess the TV production company at that time needed time off for manga to catch up with TV. After that it may be due to the number of viewers or rating of the show the company decided just let the TV show end there. It is just like the Ichigo 100%. Another example is the Cross Road now the TV episode as today is 30 and it is already start to reach the last book of manga series. So, I guess the TV production company need to make a decision either cut the story off as loss end or make the new path or plot that is not originally from manga later on the show.

Ex/ Inuyasha Final Act. I loved the original series and remember watching Ep167 and realizing their wasn't really an ending. I didn't read the manga and found out that the manga itself wasn't too far ahead meaning, they couldn't produce shows for it. Now that the manga is done (albeit a few years later), they are able to finish to the story completely.

I'd prefer for Anime's to follow the manga as closely as possible so that those who watch the show or read the manga can actually discuss without having to do both. Thats why I'm watching FMA: Brotherhood, because I've been told the original FMA series did not follow the manga.

So out of curiosity, how far are they in the manga for this? Isn't there enough for them to continue or is it due to the fact that the ratings on the show weren't that great?

I am not sure about the Air Gear since I dropped the manga at Vol. 10 (not enough time to read them at that time). Right now the newest Vol. is 26. It is not unusual the TV anime just stop production or only one season due to the rating and stuffs. You know business is business and if it is not enough to generate the revenue it is just chopped.

Inuyasha is a rare case thou. The first series (in total 167 episodes) stop at Sept. 2004 and continue to air this year October season after 5 years (will start from Vol. 36 to the last Vol. 56). I guess it is the power of Takahashi sensei's fans and also there is no doubt both manga and anime are excellent. Also, the company may be wanted to keep the tradition like the other Takahashi sensei's manga to TV series like Urusei Yatsura, Ranma 1/2 and Maison Ikkoku. (wow, talk about flash back my memory and I think I still have the all above TV series OP and ED songs on tapes :cheesygri )

Anyway I got a side track a little. IMO, Air Gear is most likely will somehow continue from what it left from the TV series. It may be as Movie or ODA. It may be re-air just like Inuyasha. Time will tell the answer from this one.

Inuyasha didn't have that great of an ending. I was expecting at least a 5th movie to close everything off. But I guess that isn't happening.

So anyone got recommendations for an anime based on comedy? Just make sure there is no nudity in there lol.

Samurai theme, comedy, action. Pretty much whatever anime could be considered an equivalent. Story could be longer or shorter.

Try out Samurai Champloo ... i watched that years ago and found it quite entertaining! I couldn't tell you what it's about now tho

you read the manga????

If you didn't, your problem is easily solved. Inuyasha the first 167 episodes was not the complete series. The show had caught up to the manga and had no where to go after that so they ended production. The manga is now finished and they are telling the rest of the story.

One of the recent episodes (it was 8 i believe) was amazing.

Clannad is a very good plot anime for sure anone of my favour. I would recommend after you finish S1 than watch first Parallel World DVD special. Then, go to S2 Clannad AS and then 2nd Parallel World Special. At last watch the Clannad Movie otherwise the movie will spoil most of the plot on Clannad AS.

The newest Gundam was Gundam 00.

I thoroughly enjoyed the anime as it was made by the same people that did Code Geass. It was not as good as Code Geass but not too far off.

The first season surpasses the 2nd season but both are really enjoyable if you are a Gundam fan like myself as for the pretty much the last 5-6 years, I've maintained Gundam as the only anime I watch.

Might be a good time to watch it if you haven't as the movie is coming out some time this Summer.

Code geass is gunna have another season. I believe its liek a parallel universe kinda thing. In the R1&R2, there were two directors but in this new season I think only one of them is going to be involved (correct me if i'm wrong). But I'm not sure if the character designs are gunna be done by clamp this time though. But something tells me this season is gunna either be codegeass quality or endless eight (if anyone knows...)

The Gundam 00 OVA's are already out if you are referring to the special editions with basically the whole series recapped.

Its not done releasing but the others haven't been subbed either. There are some new scenes and they actually changed a few things in some scenes as well from what I've heard. Otherwise the movie is coming out this year and Gundam Wing got a refresher with some new scenes.

'black butler' airs on J2, a TVB-owned anime youth channel.
u can find TV rips of their airing on most chinese download sites. not that hard to find. also note that the japanese version features Paku Romi (the voice of FMA's Edward Elric) in a shorter role. i've only seen 9 episodes so far. but so far, the show is pretty good. that "jack the ripper" arc was just so haunting.

most of the FMA voice actors are also in 'black butler'. in fact, the voice of Ciel Phantomhive in the cantonese dub is actually the voice of Envy's cantonese dub voice. i coulda sworn sebastien has the same voice of roy mustang.

So happy that S2 of K-On and Ookiku started. Full Metal Alchemist and One Piece are both quite good. A new series I started that's still somewhat interesting is Angel Beats.

Other than those, I haven't been keeping up with anything else. Actually, I enjoyed the Nodame Finale series. Ended crappy though. Also I hear the new season of Major already started so will have to start downloading that too.

I'm still wondering if they will every continue Skip Beat and Ippo.

Can anybody suggest some ongoing or recently-finished anime for me? :D
Short series, 13-26 ep preferred.

I'm currently watching K-ON!!, just finished watching Durarara, To Aru Kagaku no Railgun, Toradora, Spice and Wolf S2, FMA:B... Prefer something light-hearted, not too heavy on the ecchi/fan-service and violence.

Thanks :D

Thanks, but I've read the manga for both. Usually I'll read the manga after watching the anime (for more story and faster pace), but not vice versa. Just a personal preference :p

Nope, none of them are "evil". It's one of those series with many parallel story-lines, and often the story just jumps around between them. It takes a while to figure out what the relationships between each character are, but once you do, the stories will engross you (at least it did for me). I like this type of anime since it introduces many characters and love relationships without creating a harem.

the girl with eyepatch has short-term memory loss due to an accident

Genshiken, school rumble, Great Teacher Onizuka (i dont remember how many episodes that one has)

But for some with a bit of violence and my personal favs. Trigun, Black Lagoon, blue gender, elfen lied.

This girl I met recently put me up on Hitman Reborn, I thought it was stupid at first but Im at episode 190 lol. LoL. I think having to name all the characters' finishing moves and have them yell out before pulling the moves has a big effect on the pace of the shows. Can you imagine how ridiculous spiderman would be if everytime he tries to ensnare an opponent, he goes "SUPA-WEB-CATCH-FORMULA-THREE"?

just start with Brotherhood. It's a remake, but following the original manga so there's nothing you would miss from the original series in terms of character build up etc.

I just finished Brotherhood about a week ago, and I think I'm gonna rewatch the first one again.

It's by the same people who made "AIR" and Klannad. I think it takes an acquired taste to watch this. It's no slapstick comedy; more drama and fuller story.

Watch FMA:B online here: http://www4.funimation.com/video/?page=show&b=280

It doesn't really matter if you read or watch, you won't be missing anything if you only do either one of them

I recommend some Ghost In The Shell as well. The 2 TV series (52ep in total) are awesome, and watch the 1st and 3rd movies.
The 2nd movie tried too hard to be all philosophical and it just ended up being unnecessary :(
Watch in this order: 1st movie, TV1, (2nd movie if you want,) 3rd movie, TV2.

I have to say, Katekyoshi Hitman Reborn! is surprisingly good.

I'm just going to randomly recommend anime new and old and of all genres:

Code Geass both seasons - Mecha anime with a mastermind story twist thing like Death Note.
FMA:B and FMA - both solid series
Seirei no Moribito - I am a sucker for fantasy anime like Princess Mononoke so I liked it.
Basilisk - ninja battles, woooooooo
Eden of the East - It was slow to start but then it turned into some suspense/thriller that got me wanting to see what's next
Hajime no Ippo - Long boxing anime, comes with a second season and like 2 or 3 movies...

That's all I can think of just off the top of my head D:

Been watching "Fist of the North Star" anime series due to a sudden urge of watching this. The recent American release of "Hokuto Musou" contributed to this urge. If there's any 80s anime that needs a modern CG remake, this is it! (re: the 3D "Legend of Heroes" animated short)

It's such a shame that it was marketed properly in North America cuz there is certainly a huge demand for it.

According to my old Cartoon Fantasy Organization members list, I was the first Canadian member back in 1980. Picked up my first penpal in 1980 (the oldest tapes I have are Mobile Suit Gundam, Space Cruiser Yamato, Galaxy Express 999, Space Pirate Captain Harlock, Gatchaman Fighter, etc.). Was with fandom from the beginning. Sent a lot of tapes to a lot of clubs. Was with the first fansubbing group out of Canada c. 1989. Was promoting anime at comic conventions in the early 1980's. Still have all my old fanzines, and club zines and APAs. Was at the first big showing of anime in the UK in 1987 (World Science Fiction Convention Brighton England). Lotsa good friends in all those years. Gave it all up about 2000. That was also the year I attended my last big convention (2000 Worldcon in Chicago). Then about 2 years ago I started getting back into it. But maybe too much has changed. I did enjoy some new series like Highschool of the Dead (a guilty pleasure that one) but gone are the shows that I really liked. Looking forward to seeing the new Space Battleship Yamato live movie (several friends have seen it and journeyed to Japan to see it there and talk with Leiji Matsumoto himself). For all this, I have stayed out of the limelight. You won't see my name listed anywhere and that's okay. But a lot of the history of anime fandom is now being lost unfortunately and Canadian fandom most of all. The few bits I see online are full of errors or have entire sections missing because they couldn't find anyone that could tell them what went down. That's pretty sad.

Well, thanks for taking the time to read this...

There are still Hokuto no Ken related comics in print to this very day. I've read a big chunk of "Souten no Ken" in Chinese but kinda stopped for a while. Just watched Saikano... I think it is pretty good.

One thing I have to comment in, don't treat this as a war anime or you will be disappointed. You don't really get any detail of the war, because it just served as the background for the love story between a couple. This is not Gundam or Valkyria Chronicles but rather a sad, emotional romantic story. Afterall that is what war always bring.

The OVA did go into some detail of the war though, so combined with various hints in the anime (toward the end) you should get a general idea of what's going on, which is basically another (sub) theme. Also, the manga is more detailed in portraying the characters and should read at least the last book for a better understand of ending.

Guys I highly recommend watching High School of the Dead.

I was just told about it yesterday by my friend who looks out for anime I love.
I honestly started watching it this morning and I finished all of it like 5 mins ago. It's like 12 episodes at like 22 mins~ each.

High School of the Dead is my ideal anime, if anyone has any more recommendations of anime that I like that would be great.

here is my tags/stuff of type of anime I like/love. the more of the wants the anime contains the more I will like it (not sure if I posted in this thread before):

Want: highschool/highschoolers, skirts, stripes, panties/pantsu, Ecchi, love, romance, harem, drama, comedy, school life, H, bed, room, sleep, tragedy, cars, motorcycles, dating, racing, incest, girl tease, food/cooking, kitchen, swimming, 2 piece swim suits, beach, sunrise/sunet, moon, night, heartbreak, suicide, public transit, bicycles, summer, spring, winter, fall, 4 seasons, girlfriend, parks, walks,
cherry blossoms, love confessions, cities, vacation, hotel(either normal or love hotel), conflict, sex, violence, lies, emo, gangsters, crimes, slow motion, wind, trees, guns/weapons.

NO: no fantasy/magic/dragons/swords etc., no mech/androids out of this world technology, no space, no battle scenes, no mecha, no dubs, no cat girls, no demons, no tentacles, no fur, no god or superficial beings, no science fiction, no gambling, no psychological bullshi-, little or no old ppl or parents, no knight, no princess, no snakes on a plane, no snakes, no getting married.

Manga readers, ever heard of Cage of Eden/Eden no Ori? It has a fair amount of ecchi with some blood/violence in the mix. Plot is about a group of passengers stranded on a mysterious island inhabited with prehistoric creatures. Main protagonists are mainly high school students who must fight for survival while finding a way out. Pretty entertaining for me, (I enjoy mangas that fall in the adventure genre like FMA), but it gets a little repetitive.

People into wacky and crude/sexual humor, there's an anime called Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt. 98% of it is drawn in American cartoon style. It is definitely NOT for children; anime fans claim it to be Powerpuff Girls and Dexter's Laboratory on crack. And it's from Gainax, enough said.

Is Clannad really that good? I guess some romance should be a breath of fresh air vs. darker stuff I keep up with like Higurashi/Umineko No Naku Koro Ni, Highschool of the Dead, etc.

Speaking of Higurashi, there's another season (Kira) coming out on July 21st but it's more of an OVA. Previews suggest fan service type but looks can be deceiving. :P

on the same boat. any recommendations on something more mature or dark? definitely no kiddie **** for me.

Darker than black? Might be in your alley? Watched the first 2 episodes and still haven't built a quick conclusion.

+1 All of the really good recommendations in this thread revolve around those genres

A ton of anime has started premiering on Hong Kong's J2 channel owned by TVB this month. Just started watching a bunch of them including Fairy Tail, Souten no Ken, Stitch (the MADHOUSE show) and Saint Seiya: The Lost Canvas. Pretty good lineup so far but I've heard that Gin-tama is currently in hiatus over there.

Saint Seiya: The Lost Canvas is probably the best out of the bunch.

They just launched the 13 episode continuation for this anime. I enjoyed the first 13 and I am hoping that the rest are good (have em all in 720p).

LOL High School of the Dead is literally all tits...

If you like that kind of stuff I recommend you Tenjou Tenge haha...

edit: its the only one i can think of and its old... im sure there are a lot of other series out there!

HSOTD is not that bad -- at least it has a small element of plot that is a more interesting than "true" breast-fests (e.g. Ikki-Tousen and Queensblades. Those are pure trash.). If they reduced the level of ecchi and made it slightly more serious I think it would be a better watch... but whatever makes money. Not like any of most of us are paying them...

The matrix bullet scene was over-the-top but HOTD isn't that bad. I tolerated the manga a little more for some reason and there is more to the plot, but don't expect weekly updates. I personally don't care for the ecchi.

AzNRiverdaleCI: Perhaps Love Hina then? It's a harem and ecchi type which you seem to hold interest in. :P

Actually, Japan's already up to episode 24 as of last week. 2 more episodes and it's done!
Saint Seiya's always been popular in Hong Kong so I'm sure the Cantonese dub will receive a proper treatment. Dub's actually pretty good so far. TVB's up to episode 2 right now. Fairy Tail, on the other hand....I don't understand why it's so popular nowadays. It's kinda like One Piece...

Yea I hear what you're saying and I don't understand it either. Fairy Tail is alright at best its a good show just to kill time but not worth waiting over for something new and exciting to come out. Plot is dragging on and taking a long time to get to the bottom of it

The only that I really enjoyed and would have paid for on disc are:

Eyeshield 21
History's Greatest Disicple Kenichi
Air Gear (new ova's are out but not same voice actors so it doesn't have the same feeling)
Hajime no Ippo (I REALLY want season 3 to come out but they are taking FOREVER...driving me nuts)
Rurouni Kenshin
Code Geass
FMA/FMA Brotherhood

Ive seen other anime but they were again alright at best. If anyone has good recommendations for similar anime then that would be great.

Yeah, I've been trying to watch Fairy Tail but so far, I'm just not feelin' it! Looks to me like TVB is airing it at a fast pace as they are currently at episode 11 since they started airing it 2-3 weeks ago. It's been pre-empted this week for whatever reason they have and should be back on the air next week. Souten no Ken is pretty good. Shame that it got cancelled due to poor ratings in Japan. This show needs to get rebooted somehow. I really enjoyed the original manga.

TVB? What is up with bleach? did they finish the manga yet or are they going to drag on the plot?

did they finish the manga yet or are they going to drag on the plot?

The manga is on a new story arc (which started off interesting) and so far it's taking like 10000000 chapters just to get to the point. Here's a basic break down:

first 4 pages: meaningless dialog
last 2 pages: a sword in the middle of an upswing attack
to be continued

repeat each week.

TVB...it's a tv station in hong kong. one of the most viewed stations in that territory and quite possibly most of the chinese-speaking populations worldwide. they're also airing 'bleach' in hong kong once it's done with the first batch airings on animax. i think 'fairy tail' is also going through that same system too. animax airs it first, then tvb airs for public access.

i gave up on 'bleach' years ago. haven't touched it since the bounto arc. from what i hear, kubo tite got alot of flack after a series of twitter comments in response to readers complaining about 'bleach'. it's still an on-going series, though.

thanks to those suggestions that have been suggested anime for me to watch. I haven't had time to check them out, but hopefully I will in the near future.

Anyways, I recently finished watching Steins;Gate. Since my friend said it was short like less than 30 episodes and 20~ mins each.

I have to admit, I liked it! Although it was sci-fi ish. But still good, nothing was cuter than "do do do" and a woman in a lab coat and a cute woman who basically talks via phone email/text all the time.

**SPOILER**
The only thing I did not like that kinda made me almost stop watching this show was that character that I thought was a girl but was a guy.

So I marathoned Steins;Gate yesterday for the full 24 episodes. I now understand why it is so critically acclaimed :P

It is quite awkward in the first few episodes, but it gets pretty damn good in the latter half of the series. Lots of surprises, heartbreak, and heroics.

I've kinda fallen behind the latest Cantonese dubbed episode of "Gundam ACE". By this weekend, TVB will be at episode 8. The dub has been pretty good so far. But I've never really been a big Gundam fan.

Oh yeah, has anyone seen the live-action Ranma 1/2 TV special? This is screaming for a follow-up/sequel. I was mildly entertained by this live-action interpretation of Rumiko Takahashi's manga. Especially when everyone's so into character here!

The only Anime that I'm still watching is One Piece. However, I was browsing through the Crackle app on the Xbox 360 and saw that it had Initial D on there and started watching it from the start. Tbh, Inori is one dead emotionless character, probably the worst in Guilty Crown next to Shu. That robot beside her has more character than her, sad, but true. lol Guilty Crown also has one of the worst storyline other than having an A+ animation.

Though, I think Fate/Zero is probably the best series from the last and current season.

True, but I think the animation and design makes up for the lack of character development so far. Not sure about the Robot being better than Inori though... I did laugh at how the robot fainted when Shu was suffocating it just when Haruka came in.

Just finished Guilty Crown 12.... Honestly they can end the anime right here, right now. A bit rushed yes, but acceptable ending and definitely archive worthy. However there's a total of 22 episodes so let's so what else it got....

I just hope it ain't as bad as some say. It'd honestly suck if it became like Dragon Ball Z with the Majin Buu saga, when they should have ended the series at the Cell saga.
