I came across a Celery 500, that all of a sudden, (with a fresh install of 98SE and all updates, including the Shutdown Supplement), started to NOT turn off. It works great, just when you go to Shutdown, it reboots.

I've reflashed with latest bios, using Defaults, re-installed SS, and still.

Motherboard?

What on earth are you doing with 98?

agreed..
my gfs mom has an HP celeron 400, with 256mb ram, and it still runs better with XP over 98..

Regardless, I'd go into the bios and make sure "wake on lan" is disabled.
Its either that, or 'wake on keyboard, or mouse...".. if its a lasermouse that will also turn the machine back on.

Try the tips at http://www.asoft.be/prod_autoexit_ts.html

You'll find more at http://www.google.ca/search?q=98+shutdown+reboots-instead

Some good links. I would recommend disabling "Fast Shutdown" as something to try first since it is easy and fixes many of these problems.

Disabling Fast Shutdown in Windows 98 (http://www.winbookcorp.com/_technote/WBTA07000499.htm)

[My mistake for not reading the original post carefully. The Win98SE Shutdown Supplement REMOVES the "Disable Fast Shutdown" option.]

Thanks for the links guys, but google was my 2nd stop after a bios update and checking the settings there. Something else, this only started after a fan was installed. Now that probably has nothing to do with this, but that is the ONLY thing that changed before this thing started acting up.

And, its only got 128MB of ram, and it was working great so theres no point in spending money to upgrade it (XP, ram) to do what is does - internet and writing letters. Was a good machine until this...got me stumped.

The solution is on Microsoft's web site

http://www.microsoft.com/windows98/downloads/contents/wurecommended/s_wufeatured/win98SE/license.asp

Hit next and save the file and then execute it.

Sorry, thats not it neither. That was one of the first things I did. The one thing that has me wondering is there is no spot to change the Fast Shutdown on Advanced under msconfig.

As I said, this is a fresh install of 98SE with all the updates and service packs (unofficial) installed. It WAS working great and all of a sudden started doing this.

The Win98SE Shutdown Supplement disables this option and its absence is a good check to make sure the supplement has installed properly (it is notorious for NOT installing correctly). I apologize for not reading your original post more carefully or I wouldn't have recommended disabling fast shutdown. (I will edit my original post.)

One question: Does the computer shutdown properly when in Safe Mode?

One suggestion: If this did happen immediately after replacing a fan I would first disconnect the fan and see if that makes a difference. If not, I would reseat all cards, memory, power connectors and cables.

Jim123, u da man! See, when you had said to reseat everything, I had done that already too, looking back at what had changed. But, I figured, no loss, and ripped it all out again. Put it back together, and she sits now, silent as a mouse.:o

Thanks for the unbiased look everyone. Happy Holidays to all!
