I'm *REALLY* surprised they don't have any DVD+Rs on sale.... I'll have to look into this.

For those interested, the Optodisc Generic media they sell, is the same media that places like Anitec are selling... their Acro Circle stuff is a higher grade disc from Optodisc. I haven't had the time to go through and really look at the quality difference between the two media types yet, I've had literally hundreds of DVDRs dropped on my lap this last month, and a huge backlog.

Check out some of the in store only specials too... some of those are ok as well :D

Looking for some advice...

Should I get this Refurb HP AMD 64 3200+ system at FS for $700
http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?sku_id=0665000FS10050987&catid=10607&logon=&langid=EN&dept=1
Pros: Faster CPU, XP Home included, More extras included (keyboard/mouse?, card reader)
Cons: Refurb, less upgrade options, XP Pro drivers not available? (according to a reviewer)

Or build a system with very similar specs at <a href=../autolink/redirectpage.php?linkid=28 target=_blank>NCIX</a> for around $750:
-AMD 64 64 3000+ - $180
-SLK 2650 Case - $70
-512 samsung ram - $78
-ASUS A8V DELUXE S939 K8T800PRO DUAL DDR AGP 5PCI SATA 1394 SND 1000LAN Mobo - $160
-BenQ 1620 DVD - $70
-200GB HD - $120
-GEFORCE FX 5200 128MB VIDEO CARD - $64
Pros: Better Mobo, more upgrage options
Cons: More expensive, slower CPU.

I'm also strongly considering the 19" BenQ FP931 at <a href=../autolink/redirectpage.php?linkid=28 target=_blank>NCIX</a> for $399 after MIR. How hot is this deal right now?

Thanks for any quick replies.

You are paid $11 to get this product. HOT deal.
Can anyone load up the rebate form? It is hanging for me. As an aside, a lot of rebate forms have language in their terms and conditions which state they will pay up to the amount of the cost of the item and no more (that is, they don't pay you more money than you put in, should the rebate amount be greater than the payment amount). I'm wondering if this is the case with this rebate.

As for everything else on their Boxing Day sale, all I can say is "BOR-ING" in my best Homer Simpson voice. Nothing really hot and there is a lot of downright mediocre pricing. Futureshop's Boxing Day sale was marginally better but they ran out of stock of everything so quick (I know they will replenish stock but I want to order NOW!). Overall, thumbs down so far to this Boxing Day!

Go with the <a href=../autolink/redirectpage.php?linkid=28 target=_blank>NCIX</a> computer. The HP will likely use some crappy mobo with all the "performance" bios options permanently hidden. Total system performance will likely be below that of a self-built system using a top-tier Asus motherboard.

And the diff between 3000+ and 3200+ is highly negligible...

I think it's to make up for the fact that out-of-province customers don't have to pay PST (except Atlantic Canada). If you're in BC and you need it shipped it's retail price +PST +GST +shipping, and that's pretty brutal. I wish other retailers would do that too... we get penalized for residing in the same province.

Yeah eloytron, I was going to get that one. The system purchase only condition only applies to the $30 mail in rebate. Even though I don't get it I still figure $355 is good for an LCD.

Note: The only thing I'm super worried about is getting an LCD with dead pixels. In the reviews I read it said that all the Samsungs that were tested, 0 had dead pixels. Is this something I should worry about because even though <a href=../autolink/redirectpage.php?linkid=28 target=_blank>NCIX</a> prices are good, when it comes to customer service they are really poor (at least to me).

Some hard to make decisions, i cant decide between the SAMSUNG SYNCMASTER 710N ad the BENQ FP783 the samsung is $356 has no dvi but has a higher Contrast ratio the Benq is 400 - 50 Mir has dual input. The Samsung would cost me $418.71 to ship to my house and the Benq would be $466.50 - 50Mir=$416.50 so basically the same. Now i dont know how good Benq is with there mail in rebates if someone has any previous experience with them please post. Thank you.

From what I have heard here and seen in the stores, the Samsung has a better colour reproduction. So unless you specifically require DVI (for dual monitor purposes or whatever,) then the Samsung would probably be a better choice. Plus, it doesn't need the MIR, which is another plus.

not sure who informed you of this but they clearly did not know what they are talking about.

ALL new dell monitors as per THEIR OWN canadian website clearly state three year warranty.

How can you tell if LCD's are 6 bit or 8 bit?

http://www.anandtech.com/displays/showdoc.aspx?i=2289&p=3

Color Depth: Almost all LCDs today are 6-bit or 8-bit LCDs. This means that each subpixel - Red, Green, and Blue - can display one of 2 to the n shades where n represents the number of pixels. A typical 8-bit LCD can produce 256 shades per pixel, or 16.7M color combinations. A 6-bit LCD panel can display 64 shades per subpixel, and since there are three subpixels per pixel, the monitor can display 262,000 color combinations per pixel. This is generally OK for gaming, but certainly not acceptable for any graphics development. Personally, I enjoy seeing the other 98% of the 24-bit color spectrum.

The BenQ FP931 they reviewed (12ms) is 6 bit.

"You'll notice that our LCDs grab 4.5s pretty much across the board with the exception of the BenQ. Spotting 6-bit LCDs are fairly easy for people who do a lot of graphics work. The image below displays 256 different shades of blue across the top; it represents the 256 hues of blue that are found in an 8-bit sub pixel. No amount of dithering can render this square correctly on a 6-bit LCD."

Food for thought.

cheers

Food for thought.

cheers
Thanks for the information! I guess that explains why the colours are not as good on BenQs than on other LCDs. What panel does BenQ use?

<a href=../autolink/redirectpage.php?linkid=28 target=_blank>NCIX</a> has LG GSA-4160B for $80.98, While FS has (or had) it for $119.99 - $50MIR. This $50 MIR is from LG directly and the rebate form doesn't say anything about any retailer. So is it possible to buy the drive from <a href=../autolink/redirectpage.php?linkid=28 target=_blank>NCIX</a> and use rebate form from FS? That would make this $30.98 (plus shipping)

Edit: Just checked <a href=../autolink/redirectpage.php?linkid=28 target=_blank>NCIX</a> again, and it's a OEM version with SW. So I suppose it doesn't have a UPC code which is needed for MIR

I was entertaining that thought in my mind as well. Does <a href=../autolink/redirectpage.php?linkid=28 target=_blank>NCIX</a> have the LG's retail? Maybe there's still a deal there?

I'm pretty sure they don't. After MIR, FS/BB's price is better and I think retail you get a dvdram as well. At least last time I bought my LG burner retail version...that was like an year ago and only 4X.:) Gonna replace that one and give it to my bro.

I placed an order to be pickup instore. How long should I wait before pick up? Will they cancel my order if I don't pickup soon? Or can I able to call and cancel my order if I don't want it now? Will they charge a restocking fee? How does it work?

They will send you an e-mail when it's ready. You can also call them to check. I don't know how long they'll hold your items for.

kinda reminds me of a funny <a href=../autolink/redirectpage.php?linkid=28 target=_blank>ncix</a> story.

I went instore to buy a limited quantity special sale item but before they gave it me they asked if I had phoned in a few minutes ago to place a hold on item.

I asked why and the saleperson say because it is the last unit left in the store so I natuarally replied of course.

Guess though if you are person who had the item on hold it is not so funny. :cheesygri

Sorry dude.

I was visiting Vancouver once and made a purchased at one of the outlets - can't remember which. I didn't have to pay any PST, although I had to show identification. I don't remember if I actually ordered for pickup or just walked-in. Hope this helps.

Didn't made any purchase this time around, because for the items I wanted, the shipping cancels out any savings I could get locally!

It's a pretty good deal, especially if they are throwing in the wireless G option for free!
