Toronto police officers' SUV stolen while idling in driveway
January 21, 2005 - 2:28 pm
By: Kevin Misener
OOPS! Several times this week police have warned us not to warm up our cars by letting them idle unattended in the driveway. Well, it turns out at least one Toronto officer wasn't listening.
Peel Police tell 680News the Toronto constable was getting ready for work just after 6am this morning, when her Toyota Highlander SUV was stolen right out of her Brampton driveway.
Toronto Police have confirmed the embarrassing details and say the officer left the suv running to warm it up in the bitter cold while she was still in the house.
To makes matters worse, the constable also lost a uniform and her badge when the vehicle was stolen.
Thieves have stolen dozens of vehicles left idling in driveways across the GTA since the cold snap started.

I've though about running off with some of the City of Ottawa's VW TDI cars a couple of times. They're usually used by parking ticket officers. The officers would usually park their TDIs on the side, idling, while they check the whole street. Every once in a while, there would be a big USP/Purolator/FedEx truck parked in front of them, to obsecure their sight of the TDI and all you have to do is pop-in, do a U-turn and off you go with a TDI.

what i don't get is why don't people make a $2 investment in a spare key?
just start the car up, leave it running, lock the door, and when you are ready, use your regular key to get in and drive away.
even my winter beater, which is barely worth $1000, has a spare key.

Because if the car is desireable all it takes is a broken window to drive away.

If your new car has one of those security chip keys, than your car is probably worth quite a bit and $50 is well worth the "investment" for the second key.
