I have an older Accent.
$16000+ is A LOT for a little car like that. You'd be much better off by paying a little more for something like a Mazda 3.
Or, get a slightly used Accent for a lot less. For example, on www.trader.ca there's a 2004 Accent GS with 8000 km for $11,995. Or a 2003 Accent GS with only 14k km for $8,995.

I've got a 2004 Accent it's a decent car but if you can afford it pay the extra 1-2k and get a Civic or Mazda 3. Avoid the Echo that thing is apparently being discontinued thankfully. The Corolla is more comparable.
Not sure about the price and haven't kept up to date on any issues, but when I reviewed the Mazda3 last year it was the best car in the economy class. Overall picked the Civic due to operating costs, value, reliability, and a couple of design annoyances with the Mazda. Mazda3 is the best handling by far, and good power.

the echo is not being discointinued...that thing has very strong sales. the quality of materials inside the echo is a few grades above the accent and civic.
but the civic is too old and long in the tooth...get a Mazda 3 or corolla if you can pay a bit more
but mazda 3's are quite pricey

If you want to keep it for only 2 - 3 years avoid this because it does not hold the resale value well.
If you want to keep it for longer than 2 -3 years avoid this because the warranty is expired and the repair cost is high.
In conclusion avoid it by all means.

What car are you referring to?? The Accent has one of the longest warranties around. The resale part is true, though improving slightly.

although the story is hosted on a Canadian site, I think it's referring to America (says its from Associated Press - Detriot).
The Echo hatchback has strong sales in Canada but for some reason, it's not available in America. They do have another model similar to the Echo under their youth brand "Scion" but is available to only a few states.
I think
"Japanese automaker Toyota Motor Corp. will replace its unpopular Echo compact car with two European-styled small cars in 2006." actually means Toyota will dump their existing Echo sedans and replace them with the Echo Hatchback 3 door and 5 door. The Echo Hatchback is styled exactly the same as the Toyota's European Yaris.

No prob ilfsoy. :)
Back to the original topic... I also think that you should add a couple grand for a better car. I'm not dissing Hyundai's, I hear they're quite good. It's got high initial quality and incredible warranty. If I were in your shoes, I'll get the Echo hatchback. It's priced similar to Accent but it's got Toyota's reputation for high reliability. The Echo would probably depreciate less than the Accent. I think Canada's Echo hatchbacks are built in Japan as well.

I've got a 1999 Accent, and it has been great. I really only use it to commute to work and back, although it has survived 2 trips to souther Pennsylvania. I only have two gripes with it, the engine light comes on easily. Every misfire triggers it on. Also, my parking brake comes on if the temperature is low enough. Other than the touchy sensors, the car is fine. The best part is since I only commute to and from work, I can go about 3 weeks or so until I need to fill it up again. Being a small car, it also fits in alot of spots that other cars wouldn't fit. I love parking it at work where nobody else can fit.

I rented a new accent (don't recall if it's 04 or 05) 2 months back...
had it for a week before the check engine light came on. However, I was pushing the car WAY beyond its limits. spent most of its time at the rev limiter.

The Accent is incredibly week, I had to literally push as hard as I can to get decent acceleration, the engine is very loud. When I looked up at the speedometer, I was only doing 40 :o . There are so many better choices, I'd take a 2001 Acura 1.7EL (16K~ used) over the Accent without hesitation.

If you arent in a rush, maybe you should look into the 2006 Kia Rio, due late summer. It has the most powerful engine for small cars, next to the VW Beetle, and a whole lot of interior space. The new Rio will be vastly improved over the current version, and the reviews on it are positive.

The pricing will be competitive with the Accent, and quality is as good (Kia is partly owned by Hyundai). The Rio5 5-door hatchback (sport concept) is SEXY!

LOL, I drive a Pontiac Grand Prix but even I dont think the domestics are head and shoulders above the Korean manufacturers.
Also, the Cobalt/Pursuit cost $15,500-$22,500 while the Accent costs $13,000-$16,300. Given that revert wants to spend $16k-$17k with some decent features, the Accent is probably better packaged. Anyway, I'm just saying that if he's considering a Hyundai, then he might as well consider the new Kia product (which will give more bang for the buck than Hyundais).

Actually Hyundai is MUCH MUCH better than most domestics now.
