Laptop suggestions? ($500 or less)

Looking for a laptop that fits the following requirements:

- 13"-15", touchscreen not needed
- decent battery life, preferably at least 4-5 hours
- not too heavy, preferably 6 lbs or less
- non-Acer branded
- $500 or less

It will mainly be used for word processing and taking notes in university.

So far, I've found the following:
- Asus S300CA (Pentium 987) http://www.staples.ca/en/ASUS-VIVOBook- ... CA_1_20001
- Asus S300CA (i3) http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX46364
- Dell Inspiron 14" Ultrabook http://www.futureshop.ca/en-CA/product/ ... ageIndex=1

Any experiences with these laptops, or suggestions for better deals?

Thinkpad t42.

It can be had for less than $100, but i've always been at least 5 years behind the times whe it comes to computers.

Newer computers just don't seem that much faster for me when it comes to the internet.

Thanks for the suggestions! As much as I like the reliability and durability of the Thinkpads of old, I'd rather look for something lighter and has longer battery life.
