Costco return policy on Marantz receiver?

I bought a Marantz NR1501 slim receiver from Costco almost 3 years ago and has died on me. I get no more sound. Problem is Costco is not an authorized dealer but this product does have a 3 year warranty from Marantz.

Would Costco take it back?

Doubtful. They used to do things like that but too many people abused it. Policy is 90 days I believe and 2 years on TVs but they are still pretty liberal. 3 years might be stretching it but you can always try.

It's under warranty, contact Marantz. Problem solved.

He mentions that costco was not an authorized dealer for Marantz

I think in this case you can return it to costco. I remember reading for electronics that if the product sold states that costco is not an authorized dealer then the warranty period would be handled from Costco instead.

That's right, but it doesn't mean the warranty is not valid. OP should contact the manufacturer first for a warranty claim. It appears they haven't done that.

The Marantz site stats:
"Products purchased from an unauthorized dealers do not qualify for warranty coverage."

http://ca.marantz.com/ca/Support/Pages/Warranty.aspx

So this is why I'm hoping Costco will honor it.

By the way this receiver is crap. I barely even used it and it died on me.

If you felt this way, is there a reason why you didn't return it as soon as you realized it wasn't good, rather than waiting almost three years?

Go ahead and try to return it. However expect a cancelled membership and escorted from the property. Costco (or at least my local one) are starting to revoke memberships to 'abuses' and cases like this.

I know someone who works in member services.

Because it was good until it died.

This wouldn't be abuse if it's still within standard warranty period. As Costco sells gray market/unauthorized products, one of the conditions of membership is that they will honor the warranty themselves as the manufacturer will turn you away.

He's stated after this though that it's been more than 3-years so that's a different case, but in general, it's not abuse if still within warranty.

+1 Not abuse in this scenario and all he has to do is ask a question. Not scam the system. But if your receipt shows longer then 3 years then and fixing will be out of your pocket.

Sorry to hear that you don't like yours. I have the same model that I got almost 3 years ago for $299 and it's be great for the most part. I like the sound it gives and at the time it packed alot of features into a small package.
As for problems, well when I first got it I had a sound popping issue but because it was within the first 30 days I exchanged it quickly, now recently I had an issue with the HDMI board but because I bought it from an authorized dealer they will fix it for free. Apparently they are good receiver but the HDMI board is the weak spot. Easy to fix on your own if your out of warranty.

+2 on not abuse. Costco will honour the warranty on their items they sell.

Costco will provide the same warranty in place of Marantz's.

You are way beyond the return date for electronics, and you are likely SOL on warranty as well. Look for a repair shop

Warranty yes. Trying to return probably result in a revoking.

However your past 90 days and 3 years on the warranty. Good luck and if that doesn't work just raise a fuss.

Or be a normal person and pay to get it repaired.

I know....not the RFD way.

So I called Marantz and they guided me through some troubleshooting but it looks like it's dead. Next I called a Costco warehouse and they said they won't refund me, but then I called Costco Head office and they said that the store should refund me. I guess I have to bring it in to find out. Worse case I guess I can use my Amex extended warranty.

Just an update. I was able to get a full refund with no questions asked.

Now there's a flag on your membership. Try something like that again.

I'm not trying to screw them. I do a lot of shopping at Costco. I just simply asked and they did it. I didn't fight for them to give me a refund.
