My coworker's two pc won't see each other's shared file folders for some reason.

On my machine with xp pro, I just disable simple file sharing and it works fine, but I can't disable simple file sharing on xp home version. Anyone know how to share files on the home network (router) with both machine running xp home sp1?

On both computers: Network Connections -> Network Setup Wizard -> This computer connects to the Internet directly or through a network hub... -> (Make sure network name is the same on both computers).

Then, go to root of directory you want to share. I.e. if you want to share C:\sync go to C:\. Click on the Sync folder, click on sharing and security, enable both buttons at bottom (Share this folder on the network and Allow network users to change my files, if you so desire). AFAIK you also need to turn off the firewall for both machines (your router acts as a firewall anyway).

Say your network name is HomeNetwork and the two directories are Sync1 and Sync2. All you need to do is go to the run prompt and type //HomeNetwork/Sync1 or Sync2 to access each respective directory. Somebody correct me if I missed something.

Both machines need to have the same domain/workgroup name and the computer browser service must be started.

also, be sure your firewall settings on your virus program is set to allow network transfers...

i used to have my home network running between 3 computers......and then we stopped for a whlie (i forgot why).....when i tried to set it up a few weeks ago, i couldn't......only to realize that it was because my firewall settings weren't allowing my computers to recognize each other through our network, so ifu have any problmes, that might be it

This once happened to me. I have WINXP pro on both computers
I could ping other computers and all. All were in the same IP mask and stuff.
But it wont share files.
What i did was go to your Network Connection --> The LAN device --> Properties. Now i assume yoou have File and Printer sharing service installed. In addition. Press Install go to Protocol pick the NetBIOS protocol or something like that. It worked for me.

XP Home does not allow you to disable Simple File Sharing.

Make sure you are on the same workgroup. This should solve your problem

Hit Windows Key-Pause

Then check the computer name.

You can also try

Start
Search
Files or Folders
A Computer on the Network

Enter in the computer name of the machine you want to find.
