I have a shiload of IDE HDDs, but my mobo supports only SATA, so I got these lil suckers http://www.iwillusa.com/products/images/I2S/I2S.jpg.

Right now I have a Intel915GEV mobo with a primary SATA Seagate200GB and the IDE channel is used up with 2 DVDRWs. I installed a ATA Maxtor160GB and a ATA WD100GB using the converters, they powerup but the mobo is not recognising them. >:(

WTF?

Are you sure the ATA HDs spin up ? Are they connecting directly to the powersupply ?

Have you tried to use DVDRW drives with the converter instead ?

I did the same thing with a Seagate 60GB hard drive on my Abit with the serillel adapter. I first tried disk managment but that didn't work so in the end I just used seatools to set it up. Maybe try something similar from Maxtor and WD?

Do they show up under device manager?

yup they spin and get warm.
trying with DVDRW?....u can stick those using SATA cables?

Im guessing seatools will work if the computer finds the new hardwares BUT they dont show up in device mgr, nor do they show up in the BIOS...

WTH!?

make sure the ATA-SATA adapter is also powered by a floppy power adapter.

Do the drives show up in your bios? Make sure you have 'SATA Enabled'

In your PC (assuming WinXP) go to Control Panel -> Performance and Maintenance -> Administrative tools -> Computer Management

Then look under Storage -> Disk Management.

It should show up there, and all you have to do is format away.

I haven't used these adapters before but do the pata drives have to be jumpered in a specific manner (master, slave, cable select) ?

What does the adapter cost? I have a few spare ATA I could use, but only SATA connections remaining... Any recommended brands?

edit - whoa $40 @ ncix.

Download MaxBlast and format your hard drive- you may need ot create a startup floppy or CD. Once set up it will be recognised, hopefully.

Your mobo supports 2 IDE - so you should use them. Unless you absolutely require 2 optical drives (which most people shouldn't), I wouldn't waste money on those adapters.

1. yup its powered by floppy adapter
2. still not showing up on BIOS
3. disk mgmt cant see it

already tried all the settings...

a lot of crap on my HDDs....dont really want to format...

I used a couple of these recently with Western Digital HD. The drives had to set to master. Have you installed the SATA drivers?

I made a 500 Gb raid. :cheesygri
Now I need to back up nearly 100 Gb of data. Hello! External drive.

That's exactly what I was going to say! :>

The promise cards work great, currently have 6 hard drives, 2 DVD drives, and 4 ide spots free in my machine. Want to take a guess how? :>

Thinking about it more, you must already have the SATA drivers installed if your running a 200Gb Sata hard drive. So look at the mother board, intel makes boards for consumers. On the Intel D915GEV (http://www.intel.com/design/motherbd/ev/ev_available.htm) there is a pin J8J4 near the MB battery.

BIOS Setup Configuration Jumper Settings

Moving it to 2-3 allows resetting the mainboard configuration.

Intel's Website
owner manual (ftp://download.intel.com/design/motherbd/ev/C6860201.pdf)
New Bios Files (http://www.intel.com/design/motherbd/ev/ev_bios.htm) 11 Feb 2005 read warnings and follow the instructions. it's important.

Oh yes and somemore Drivers (http://www.intel.com/design/motherbd/ev/ev_drive.htm) for your MainBoard. ;)

whats the pros and cons of these Promise IDE controllers as compared to IDE-SATA converters?

It largely depends on which controller card you purchase.
Pro:
May increase performance
May allow you to use raid
Allows you to install additional devices in your computer

Con:
Takes up an IDE slot
Usually requires long(ugly) cable runs
