Is there a software that I can use to check my cpu, case etc temperatures right in windows without going into bios and such? Also what is the ideal operating temperature for the cpu? Thanks in advance!

not to take away form the thread but does anyone know where u can compare ur cpu\mobo temp to see if it runs hot .

Post your temperatures here. Although motherboard sensors are never very accurate, the correlation between motherboard temperature and CPU temperature should be more than enough.

Just post em along with your specs! :D

Is that idle temperature? Could you try running it at full load, using Prime95 and checking the temperature?

If that is idling temperature then that might be a bit hot for a 3200+, but still reasonable.

computers been on for 5 days just finished burning a dvd movie
but those are regular temps . i guess i should purchase something to cool the temperture of the system . dont want it blowing up on me

Again, is that full load or idle? Full load that is a perfectly fine temperature (Nice PWM temp by the way, my Shuttle's is at 70C+!), idle.. 52C is a bit high.

There are some things you can do with the Shuttle if you want to make it run cooler, without any $$$ necessary.

That was after 5 hours of usage, and right after a reboot (Went into bios to check). How do you make a shuttle cooler without any $$? I was planning on getting more case fans. :)

Alright, first off :

You see the back grill, right? It's so air restrictive it's insane. Use pliers to rip it out (little connecting pieces at a time) or if you have a dremel just cut it out. You should get a nice 3-4C off of the CPU temp.

Another neat trick (if you have a spare 80mm fan lying around) is after you cut the grill out, slap a 80mm fan to the BACK of the Shuttle and use long screws to screw it into the ICE (screwing the other 80mm fan inside the Shuttle together too!). This is called the push-pull configuration, which uses two fans sandwiching the ICE. It is the most effective mod, dropping temps a full 10C+ (Mine dropped from 60C full load to around 39C full load.) The reason for this is because the 1-80mm fan configuration leaves a dead spot in the middle of the ICE, and the second 80mm fan added on will cool that dead spot perfectly.

If you need any more information feel free to message back. I highly suggest at least cutting the grill out! It's not hard, aluminum is easy to bend and twist.

EDIT : If you want to silence the Shuttle, let me know too. I got some suggestions on replacement 80mm fans you might find interesting, and some mods for that 60mm PSU fan of yours!

^ LOL. I don't know about cutting the grill out. heh :D For the second 80mm fan. Do I have to cut out the grill for it to fit? Can I just tuck it under the current 80mm fan? Will it fit?

And yes I would like silence the shuttle. heheh. Since it now sits on top of my desk, and once the fans starts running it gets extrememly loud.

Thanks for all the help btw!

I highly, HIGHLY, HIGHLY suggest cutting the grill out. If you don't want to, however, the addition of a second fan might not be as beneficial but it might still help. It will fit, let me try to get pictures of what I did on mine.

For silencing the Shuttle, yours will be a simple task. (Mine was a RefleXion with a 40mm PSU fan, which I had to make an adapter from 40mm=>60mm and slap a 60mm SilenX fan, which was still noisy!). I think the loudest component on your Shuttle is the CPU fan, which you can replace with a Nexus 80mm for about $16. If you still find it noisy, the only other thing would be the 60mm PSU fan, and if you want you can replace the stock one with a 60mm SilenX, plugged into the power supply indirectly.

Apr 7th, 2005, 11:55 PM
Ah alright thanks for all the help. I'll look into cutting the grill ;) For the second clear fan, the fan is blowing air back into the shuttle right? And the black one is for the PSU?

akwok
Apr 7th, 2005, 11:58 PM
Yeah, I had to slap a replacement fan on the PSU.

The clear fan is the one you want to do. It is pulling air out, as is the fan inside the shuttle. I used long screws (that came with the Zalman ZM80D) to mount everything together.

RBK
Apr 8th, 2005, 12:00 AM
Ah ic. You didn't drill new holes into the shuttle right?

RBK
Apr 8th, 2005, 04:01 AM
BTW What noiseless (virtually) noiseless fan would you recommend me to get for mounting on the outside of the shuttle (your clear fan for example).

Also my CPU fan is 92mm so it would still be ok if I replace it with a 80mm?

nexus fans are virtually silent at around 19.2dba (for the 92mm fan)
of course with a lower dba u obviously get a lower cfm

check out silentpcreview.com they reviewed many fans there of all sizes

the nexus fan is around 15bucks at ncix, its brushless too and made in china.
god i felt ripped off after buying it.

but its in my psu right now, and it is dead silent

thanks for the mbm monitor program!

I use Hardware Sensors Monitor (http://www.hmonitor.com/):

http://tinypic.com/2mh3cj

It also displays Asus GPU temps.

MBProbe (http://www.majorgeeks.com/download283.html) is also excellent and free:

Both have System Tray indicators of your choice.

Anyone know where I can get the nexus fans in the gta area? I asked around a couple of places at pacific mall etc.. and they said they don't have it.

you might not want to cut the back plate off for re-sell purposes etc. I agree you could see a few temp drops by simply mounting the fan on the outside at the back. Its a simple quick way to lower temps.More air escapes sucking thru those holes than trying to push thru, the problem is mounting fan on the outside increase's the noise.

I am using the SmartGuardian software that came with my motherboard.
Only 1 fan in the system besides the silent ones in the power supply!

Idle temps
CPU 37 PWM 48 Chipset 52

Load temps
CPU 39 PWM 48 Chipset 57

(not sure if my load temps are accurate. didn't want to install additional software to I just checked the temp after some loops of 3DMarks. Do they look right?)

lead : If you choose the right type of fan it will be inaudible no matter what.

felix : You sure those are your CHIPSET temperatures, and not your CPU temperature? ;). Find it quite weird that CPU temperature would vary 2 degrees, while CHIPSET 5! :D (Especially the northbridge at 55C, lower than the CPU temperature? Insanoworld!)

RBK

BTW, akwok. Do you have anything cooling the chipset of your shuttle other than the heatsink that came with it? I'm just a little worried that it will over heat without any air passing through it.

akwok
Apr 9th, 2005, 01:52 AM
I'm using a Zalman NB47J (I think that's what it's called, been a while). That big blue heatsink. Barely fits, but works well. The active cooling was gone in day one, turned it on - heard it - then went to NCIX to pick up the Zalman (My home is Vancouver.. sigh. 11 more days!)

Chipset temps are fantastic. BUT PWM ISN'T! Ahh, stupid Shuttle and their badly placed mosfets.. I put heatsinks on them and they still go at 60C full load. Oh well, they're meant to go over 80C anyways, so whatever.

Right now I'm thinking of slapping a 120mm in the back to see if I can silence it further. The SilenX 60mm is very annoying, it has a high pitched whine basically.

The CPU I run in the Shuttle is a 2.4C @ 3.6, which reaches max temps of about 46C, idle 39C. Passively cooled graphics card at the moment (Bought a crappy FX5200 for $30)

Ok I decided to not cut out the grill, but I bought a 80mm nexus fan to put on the outside. Now my temperatures have dramatically dropped!!

PWM - 44c
CPU - 45c
System - 35c

This is pretty good IMO. Even with the extra fan, I do not hear any extra noise.

good software, but does anyone know if these temps are the real temps??

it is hard to say, i read on a forum my mb bios reads the thermometer near the cpu a few degrees higher than real temp. The only way to know for sure i guess is to check yourself which i see ppl do when they review HSF. You could use and IR thermometer which you point to the the thing you want to temp measure and it reads it out.

also my temp reading when in the bios is close to my idle when in windows, but can't stress the cpu when in bios to see max temps.

btw, i forgot to say,
the speed fan throttles the cpu fan so it is only running full speed during gaming.
