View Full Version : SDM free $20 GC with $50 purchase on April 16-17

Shoppers Drug Mart is supposed to be giving out a $20 gift card with a purchase of at least $50 this coming weekend, April 16-17. The usual exclusions will probably apply, e.g., prescriptions, products that contain codeine, non-pointable items, stamps, transit tickets and passes, event tickets, electronic Gift Cards, Life Experiences packages and Shoppers Home Health Care locations.

This is ideal for those who can buy $50 worth of necessities. It is like getting $70 worth of products for $50, or 29% discount.

And why exactly doesn't SDM participate in @Home?

That would be like 49% off

The way it stands right now the rule is that the stores are not to give out the gift card when you redeem points bringing your total below $50.

Actually you do get points even when redeeming your 34,000 pts for $75 of stuff

I just did it tonight and got 300 pts when redeeming for $75 :) at the SDM at Elgin Mills + Yonge St. in Richmond Hill

Please check your receipt. The 300 points are probably product bonus points or if you had bought $75+30. When I redeemed recently, my regular points was only 50 instead of 750+.

As a supervisor at shoppers for 3.5 years+ I can fill you guys in:

You only get points for anything you pay for

So in this case, if you ended up gaining 300 pts, that means you must've spent $105 + tax.

Explanation:
Keeping in mind that you redeemed 34,000 points ($75),
this brings your subtotal to $30 ($105-75).

Then, 10 points per dollar = $30 x 10 = 300 points.

Yes, it's too bad that SDM, Wal-Mart and grocers have refused to have 20% discounted gift cards. However, SDM's recent promotions have turned out to have higher discounts: 29% this weekend & 31% from 20x Saturday. The best ever promotion was March Multiplier, when I got a much bigger discount. :D

And why exactly doesn't SDM participate in @Home?

Uh-oh guys....They're on to us...

sw1ft, let head office know we need more bonus points....and shoppers should stock more electronics so we can use the darn points!

Any limit on how many giftcards are available per store? Last time they ran the PetroCan $10 GC promo the place I went to had only 1 left at around noon and the clerk said when they were gone they were gone, although you could try another location.

If you're a shoppers employee... and get the employee discount on your purchases... can you still get the $20 GC if your purchase total exceeds $50?

Every store has a limited supply of GC's that are supplied to them.
However, at the same time, they are allowed to photocopy GC's when supply is running short (or at least for the SDM GC's). I'm pretty sure we photocopied the Petro Cards too.

The answer is yes, it still forces employees to spend $ at the store.

End of winter = sales incline

Consumers need an incentive to buy things, thus SDM is just pushing sales!

based on $50 purchase, 20X will give you 10,000 point in total; next week promo will give you 500 point + $20 GC, it works out to be about the same (provided that you use $75 redemption value in calculation)

eBuddy

I don't think you can redeem points for any GC, lotteries & the other exclusions. Your pre-tax, post-redemption total will have to be at least $50 to get the free $20 GC.

Now I'll redeem some points and get a couple of gift cards!

have to think carefully before act this time. I bought around $130 on this past Sat. But think about the prices in SDM...for Neutrogena facial liquid, it's 11.99 at SDM while 7.99 at Walmart for exact the same thing. Do the points cover for that 4 dollars difference? I doubt.

BTW, does SDM ever do PM with Walmart?

Also look at the HOT Dawn deals today, the detergent I bought at SDM was a rob.

Got a question here. say I bought 100 on this past Sat for 20x, and I went back to return 40 worth stuff. what's gonna happen to my points? may I return the goods at different SDM or I have to return them to the SDM where I bought them? Does SDM do PM with other stores, say Walmart? thank you.

- you have to spend $50 before taxes and after all discounts and after redeeming any points
- the GC is a $20 cosmetics GC
- the card you will receiver cannot be used until the last week of April (I can't remember the exact dates), but it will be turned on at head office, and then deactivated on may 7th i believe
- employees will not get their discount this weekend if you want the gift certificate. if you don't, you can still get your discount

Isn's SDM way over priced?

I bought some "pedialyte" for my son once, paid something like 10$ for a big bottle, walmart was sellling it for 6.80$. Another time I was looking for vitamin D for infant, SDM was ~12$ but I paid 6$ at walmart.

We were also going there for presciption drugs but stopped that once our insurance company would not pay dispensing fees of more than 7 - 8$. SDM fees were 12 - 13$ !!! Loblaws and Walmart are < 7$ if I remember correctly..

Anyways, I don't understand how come SDM is still in business. To me, they are like Staples!

Since your Optimum Card was used in the transaction, every purchase can be traced. (Everything is computerized nowadays, the POS system knows all  )

Shoppers only will accept refunds if a receipt is given + the Optimum Card # matches + the proper means of payment is given (i.e. visa, mc, amex, debit).

Once these prerequisites are met, the system will automatically deduct the points off your card. So if you're returning $40 worth of stock --> 40 x 10 x 20 = 8,000 points will be deducted. (Current points earned today: -8,000)

lol, think of SDM more as a (large) convenience store w/ a pharmacy. The answer is no.

Well generally this only happens with SDM GC's. Photocopied GC's must be dated and signed and must be redeemed at the store where it was issued.

SDM may be "overpriced", but they do have weekly sales that are basic loss-leadership marketing methods. For example, often Royale Facial Tissues goes on sale for $0.59, but the cost itself is approx $0.70 or so. Another example are cases of pop - on average 2 cases of 12 (cans) for $5.99 is cheap. In other words, you lose money in one area, but make up for it elsewhere.

Also, for some items, such as bus tickets, newspapers, and stamps, customers are rewarded with Optimum points. These types of items would be the exact same price elsewhere, but customers are given points as an incentive. Typically, TTC tickets are the easiest way to make points off of an 'everyday' purchase. I.e. Adult bus tickets $20 per strip = 200 points

so if I were to buy $75 worth of stuff... but instead of paying with money/cc, I redeem my points, I wouldn't have spent a dime and I would not get the GC correct?

Also something I've been confused about for a long time... In order to redeem 34000 points, do you have to have >$75 worth or >$65.22 (after tax = $75) worth of stuff? I'm sure this has been asked before.

And yes SDM is overpriced on a lot of things... but for some cosmetics, according to my sister, same price everywhere. Also like others have mentioned, newspaper, TTC stuff, etc are same price everywhere. And I always buy my pop/soda from them... cheapest in town.
