Ok, I know people never shutdown their computers, but I sorta have to, people in my family get pissed that its on and the powerbill, blah blah blah....

But whats the difference between "shutting down" and "hibernating or going on standby"

I notice, when i go on standy/hibernate....My Cpu fan, basically everything shuts down, cept theres the light blinking......I was wondering, is your computer still on during the process?

Just wondering, what do you think?

Hibernate saves the contents of the RAM to hard disc and shuts off all the power to the computer. Standby slows down the CPU somehow, or keeps power to the RAM to save the contents, not exactly sure. I use hibernate on my lappy all the time.

I always HIBERNATE... very cool feature to save ram snapshop to HD... then when your PC powers back on it's back to the same stuff you were just looking at. Love it and always use it.

Your PC will resume faster out of standby than hibernation. Hibernation essentially shuts down the PC after saving the current state to disk. Coming out of hibernation will still be faster than cold booting.

I recommend standby when you're not using it. It should be pretty quiet and it cuts down on power usage while still allowing you to quickly start using it again.

Very true... I would say STANDBY if you're going to be on the PC again within 2 hrs and HIBERNATE if you're gone for 2+ hrs... nice power savings.

Do remember that hibernate also takes up quite a bit of disk space depending on how you've set it.

What are the physical controls for each of these modes?

Stupid Question: Hibernate or Standby.... Any Damage involved? slowing down your computer? etc...

Nah... less so than actually 'using' your pc. Of course I do do (:)) a cold reset around once a month.
