I bought mine last week.....works fine. Got the black one. I wish the writing on the side was a bit less obvious.

Other than the look of it, Is there any advantage to this over any other ext. HD enclosure, with firewire, usb and power switch?

Can somebody tell me why they'd want something like this? What's the point? Not flaming, but I've been racking my brains for a few moments here and can't figure it out. What's the point of an external HD enclosure when an internal HD would be more quiet and probably faster?

- Some cases may not be able to fit more drives.
- Ease of use (moving it around the house for backup)
- Sexiness
- Some people rather buy an enclosure than a controller

Reason? Because we want an *external* hard disk instead of a *internal* hard disk? It can't be that hard to understand.
External...
- portable.
- transferrable between computers, bring large amounts of data back and forth between computers, plug and play.
- may have run out of internal bays
- make use of extra hard disks we may have lying around
- offline storage, backups

HOLY JESUS.
And to think, I paid $78 for my Firewire enclosure that loves to not turn on properly, only after about 50 times switching the power on and off (purchased 2 years ago :( )

I have two external fire wire drives, an older 60gb La Cie and a new La Cie 160gb drive. I bought both to transfer files to and from school. I ended up getting my newer dirve as the old drive is a bit large and was a bit if a pain to lug back and forth, especially compared ot the new drive.
Pic of new drive:

a) that was 2 years ago
b) it has firewire, which is more expensive on external enclosures
so don't feel to bad ;)
as for this Vantec, i'm interested in the 2.5" enclosure when that comes out, it's smaller and you probably wouldn't need the power adapter

Okay, I'm definitely not trolling or flaming; I just want to understand. Why would you buy an external enclosure to transfer files instead of burning to DVD? For that matter, what kind of data is large enough to require a multi-gigabyte hard drive (that needs to be altered, hence a rewritable HD instead of a one-time write DVD), and why does it need to be shifted around? All I can think of is movies, games, and music, or possibly a user that has many low GB HDs lying around rather than one or two larger HDs.
It looks very, very sweet, however, and I would rather have that sitting on my desk than a beige box. Wish I could justify it, though ;)

Well in my case, I'm working with large files that go well over the cpacity of a DVD, even a dual layer DVD. I mean if you work with raw vidoe or malti pass Maya renders, you can get files that can be in the gig(s) range, so just imagine what it's like if you have many of these files. Also, it's alot easier, faster and makesm ore sense to bring my work files with me to and from school so I'm always working with the same files, rather then having to burn a DVD, then copying the files on to the HD at school, the reburning a DVD and then copying those files on to my home PC to sync up my files.
Also, it's nice to use the portabel drive as back up, so I've got a bunch of files that I don't want to lose on my drives.

Yeah it would come in handy with all the 30gig and under drives lying around too.

So you're talking about professional usage. I can definitely see this. Sorry for being thick!

I use mine to keep all my work files (entire directories full of files, some of which are very large). If I need to work at home, I can make a copy of all my work and bring it with me.
Also, DVD's are slow. If you need to make backups every day, it's way faster copying to a hard disk than burning a DVD.
Lastly, it's nice to be able to make use of hard drives that I have lying around. I have a 80GB drive that I wanted to reuse after I upgraded to a 200GB one. You can never have too much storage.

That would be no, I only frequent one forum. This one.
and to answer Txiasaeia:
I have 4 harddrives on my desk right now that have no space for in my two computers.
160GB x2
100GB
120GB
It's really nice not having to turn OFF my computer, open the case, screw the harddrive in place, set jumpers, plug the cables just to backup my stuff or just load up 100+gb of anime to watch somewhere else if you're going on a trip.
It's not really practical for stuff like carrying homework or lecture notes. A simple USB memory key would suffice there. I use my 512MB key for misc crap like drivers when a computer doesn't have network access due to lack of drivers from a fresh windows install.

My reason is very simple..
Silence.
I want to be able to slap my old NOISY hard drives into enclosures, then turn them on when I need to. And ONLY when I need to. I do not want to go in and unplug and plug in the power cables non stop.
I might think of purchasing around 4 of these just for kicks. I have 4 hard drives just sitting here, it might be nice to see how they all look together.

I use mine for when I pull the harddrive out of my PVR to rip its contents to my computer for transferring to DVD or when fixing a computer and need access to the harddrive and the computer wont boot. The way my desk is setup doesn't make it easy to just pop the side of the case.
