Not too long ago I bought these chinese-made, no-name pair of "AA" batteries for $0.99 cents and the bloody things didn't even finished one side of my 60-minute cassette tape before they croaked!! lol

Only about 22 mins of cassett time

The batteries were grey in color with tiny red chinese characters on the side, bought them at the Dixon flea-market from this indian/punjabi vendor. I guess these things are bought for 0.25 cents a pair and resold at .99 cents in Toronto. Stay the damn away from them because they also leak this brown rusty water when they croak after 10 mins on your walkman.

Sounds like Powercell. They're sold for 50 cents for a pack of 4 and resold downtown for $1 or $2 too. A lot of asian run stores sell them.

common sense prevails..

i laugh at the packs of 10 for a buck...maybe worthy to put in a remote control..but useless for anything else..

i belive the big brands like duracell/enegizer just added the best before installed dates on their products about 10 years ago ...before that the shelf life of batteries wasn't known too well...so the cheep dollar store ones could well as be 10 years old.. lots of shelf life drainage..

we have this asian supermarket in Edmonton that sells expired batteries for really cheap. It's brand name stuff but just expired, wonder if that's even legal...

If they worked as well as Duracell, they wouldn't be selling so cheap. You get what you pay for.

Better be careful that they don't leak battery acid inside your electronics too. With such a cheap price, I wouldn't be surprised if the physical qualities of the battery were sub standard as well.

I seriously think these cheapo batteries were not wrapped in aluminum but in carton, I'm serious.

Years ago, Jutan International in Toronto (distributor of Candle,Citizen - not the watches, Concerto, JIL etc) were served with a court injunction prohibiting them from distributing batteries under the brand name "MAXWELL" after the Canadian distributor of Maxell products went to court.
It seems people were assuming they were buying "Maxell" products and when the crappy batteries failed, they were taking them back to Maxell! :)

I can still remember the cardboard carbon batteries we used to buy at Towers Dept store under the brand name "Flying Bomb" made in China for 10 cents a battery back in the 60's. They used to leak, corrode and lasted about an hour in a battery powered toy...but they were only a dime, so we got what we paid for!

I bought a 16 pack of AAA batteries from the local Home Hardware store. Some noname brand that I bought cause it was like $3. I used them in my mp3 player and they've been giving me the same time as the Energizers I've been using up until now.

NO way this can be true..... you mean the 16 cheap batteries lasted the same as 1 duracell?

No, I'm serious. One of the noname AAA batteries lasted as long as an Energizer AAA battery. I've also bought and used the 40 packs of AA and 12 or 16 packs of AAA yellow batteries from Superstore and found that for me, they are the same as Energizer or Duracell.

I saw the fakes 'Supercell' I believe they were called (16 for $3) or something along those lines. Would not risk putting a single one into any equipment I didn't want fried or filled with battery acid.

Quite deceptive though because the entire colour scheme and motif was a straight copy of Duracell. Almost bought them until I read the name.

I have seen 12 "AA" packs of DuraCell in Wal-Mart for a paltry $4 bucks..... how can this be true when in convenience stores they cost $3.99 for only 2 DuraCell AA's? Is it possible that Wal-Mart sells DuraCell knock-offs? I doubt they can get away with it.

or maybe because items like these are more expensive in a convenience store.
or maybe because they don't have the buying power a walmart has.

I got it from zellers for $34.99 (the 15 minute Nimh charger, was on sale I think) + batteries cost like $9 for 2 AAA's and $11 for 2 AA's. They last a very long time on my digi cam (about 1.5 hours with lcd on, depends) and mp3 players and only take 15 minutes to recharge.
