Can anyone explain what filter in PS has been used here to produce this nice, "liquid" effect (as compared to the more sterile digital photos)

http://img67.imageshack.us/img67/1240/img9914wz2.jpg
http://img392.imageshack.us/img392/5060/img0052vs4.jpg

What "liquid" effect are you referring to.

The pics look to be de-saturated: the second completely, the first partially.
The contrast has been given a large boost. (Whether through boosting blacks or increasing shadows...)

Sharpened properly.
Small vignette added. (More noticeable on the bottom pic)

These are doable within Lightroom.

I like the composition of this one. I just wish the red train was a bit more colourful.

Could use some green tree leaves in the top left corner, but it looks like it was out of season for that.

I'm curious to know as well of your equipment! As well, these shots seem too good to be taken from behind the glass, were you lucky enough to take a few shots through the open holes in the glass for the press photographers?

For hockey, I use my D3 with 70-200 2.8. For field sports, usually the D300 + 300 2.8 w/ the TC14. If its inside at the Rogers Centre, D3 + 300 2.8 w/ TC 1.4.

No such thing as really clean glass at an NHL rink. The impact from the warmup shots alone scuff up the glass a ton. You get cleaner glass at local rinks, though the lighting sucks.

Thats it? Just sharpening and contrast? They look remarkably different than converting most RAWs to black and just playing around with contrast.

So I was contacted to do headshots recently by a friend of a friend who wants to be an actor/model. I haven't really done any actor/model headshots so I had to scour the web for information on how to take a head shot. I looked around for a bit but couldn't find much. The best I could find was this website resource:

http://www.headshots101.com/index.html

But this website was mainly geared towards actors/models learning about how to find a headshot photographer and how they can get prepared for the actual day. Not much meat for us photographers. Anyways, I ended up just looking at headshots done by EXPENSIVE (ie. GOOD) photographers and mixing up my own spin on things.

Nice shots. For your last shot here; did you place the strobe directly behind him and shoot full power through a diffuser umbrella to create that effect?

An OT question but how do you strobists guy shoot your flashes in sunlight? I was wanting to try something with my strobes but I can't get my camera to shoot in 1/200 at the minimum aperture for the sync of my Rebel (mine syncs up to 200) in daylight. Am I going to have to wait until it is darker or could I use a Graduated Neutral Density filter?

Hi to get that shot I just had a large window behind my subject. I over expose the background and it becomes nice and white. Sometimes you may need to make the subjects face lighter by using a flash or a reflector. In this case I just used Adobe Lightroom.

Your camera limits your sync speed (ie. max shutter speed when using a flash). On most cameras it is between 1/200th of a second to 1/250th. Older cameras like the Nikon D50, D40, Canon 1D can do 1/500th, but if you attach the flash with a remote trigger you can actually do up to 1/1000th of a second!

What you will find when using flash in the middle of the day is that this sync speed isn't enough to keep the bright ambient sunlight from overexposing everything. Normally you can just set your shutter speed really high like 1/4000th or something, but with the limits of flash sync speed this is impossible. You will have to do a combination of the following:

1) Lower your ISO. But there are limits to this as most cameras only go down to ISO 100 or 200.

2) Use a smaller aperture, instead of F2.8 you will now need to use F11 or smaller! This means that you're going to get way more depth of field (not as good for portraits), and your flash has to work harder to light the subject.

3) Use neutral density filters. Has the same effect as lowering the ISO.

4) Wait till it gets darker. As it becomes darker your max sync speed will become adequate to over power the diminishing sunlight. Sometimes you just don't have the time to wait. Another way you can work this into your shoot is if you shoot somewhere that has shade!

Just a hotshoe flash from upper left into a reflective umbrella. VERY plain and very simple. But it's my go-to setup for simple effective portraiture. It's not that exciting though.

Why are you rating pictures? Do you have difficulty viewing small pictures because you are the only one who seems to be very annoyed at this (most of us are annoyed you keep posting that pictures are too small ).

Insane Pikachu; I like #3; very nice post editing.

I took some abstract shots today from an incest candle:

I am going to overlay different smoke pictures with different colors when I have time to see if I can get anything interesting.

I am going to play more with this later when I have larger background drop so I can capture the whole smoke instead of being forced to cut it off at the top.

whats the setting of this shot?

Nikon SB 20 shot to right of the incense candle at 1/8 (not sure exact distance) with incense candle against blackdrop. After that; I opened file in Photoshop; underexposed or increased shadows to cover any mistakes in the backdrop. Inverted picture; corrected mistakes in background, and added color overlay. I added a gradient overlay but you really don't need to do that.

Settings for camera: ISO 100, 1/50, f/2.8, 37mm.

nice! was that taken at a store/market in ottawa?

Thanks!

It was actually at a fish market in Bergen, Norway.

They know their seafood!

All around the fish market they had there huge planters with protective wood covers over the top - I thought they were empty for the winter my first night there, but it turns out they fill them full of water and you can pick your dinner at the side of the road.. crazy stuff!

Hey, do you mind sharing the general outline of exposure you shot at. I was shooting the York and Ryerson OUA Quarterfinals and it was my first time shooting sports. Let's just say 90% were blurry haha yeah.

I was using
Nikon D200 with the Nikkor 80-200mm f2.8D
1600 ISO
1/80s
f/4

Exposure was good, the shutter speed would probably be my main cause of course. Any tips would be awesome so I know the general exposure for my next game.

It really depends on the lighting...McMaster U has exceptional lighting compared to other schools... so these are the general settings I was able to get away with ...

ISO 800-1000, 1/250-1/320, f/2.2-3.2
the lenses I used were 50mm 1.8D, 80-200mm AF-D and a 80-200mm AF-S that a fellow photographer let me try out =)

for mens basketball, the absolute minimum shutter speed to get non-blurry images is 1/200... womens you can get away with 1/150.

also shooting in RAW also helps because you can get away with higher shutter speeds and lower ISO, that can be adjusted in photoshop.

if you go to my site and view the pictures, you can see the settings I used for each photo =)

Or is he drifting? :O

Can't tell by how bad that car is looking. It's either he's sliding out and effed up the car pretty bad prior, or he's drifting, but failed prior. :)

The one that came with my D40 kit: Nikon DX 18-55 mm. I took them in manual focus since the autofocus wouldn't focus that close.

Went on a field trip with the gf to the fire station's training center and some new commercial buildings:

They were shot here in Ottawa. The near-by fire station has a training facility so we asked if we could take pictures and they gave us free rein.

My girlfriend just got her own medium format. The quality is of the shots are amazing and the scanned files are huge.

Well, this one is pretty rough, shot through a window and all, but in terms of capturing the moment, it is my best picture I've taken. I was too lazy to clone out the one distracting element so I've titled it appropriately...

I really like the colours, any post-processing?

Thanks, the colors were the way I intended them to be and the sun was coming down for shots 2+3 which allowed for more colors when I shot the photo.

Definitely PP. I probably could have played around and done everything in camera but I took these today in the freezing cold  so I didn't want to spend time and mess around too long since I wanted to hurry.

The 1st one you can tell right away I PP'ed it a bit. I had to bring out the shadows as I didn't get the right exposure on the building. And I purposely tried to put a ring around the building to expose it more to let it pop.

2nd one I didn't really do anything except up the contrast but did Gaussian blur overlay a bit. Colors were mostly from camera since the sun was showing and giving nice colors at the time. But once you up the contrast, the colors up along with it. Composition wise, all came out well as I didn't need to crop or rotate.

3rd one I just upped contrast. I didn't really do much with this as it came out great as the sun was showing/coming down and reflecting off the other building.

I don't have it either, I'm just testing it out. But definitely I would seriously consider scrapping my original want of upgrading to FF and go with this instead. It just provides you with so many custom options to tweak and you get a sense that you can do amazing things with the camera, I totally love it. It's fast and noise is amazing and colors are so wide, it can become so vivid and contrasty its literally crazy to see. :cheesygri

The only reason I see you NOT going FF is the price.
Other than that, why not get a D700 which is basically a FF D300.

So gonna wait for the D400?
Given Nikons product timing I'd say you have about another year to wait.
Til then, more Coolpix cameras which are getting increasingly better (for once *cough*P6000*cough*)
The D90's not a bad option either..it uses the same sensor as the D300 so when shooting in RAW, same colour reproduction and noise control.

Well these are all taken RAW and processed in Lightroom. For the most part I tweak the levels, maybe push the colours a bit. The two night shots and the 4th image, the pink sky, are pretty much straight from camera. It really varies depending on the image, it will dictate what type of look I want from it.

Shots #6 and #7 are more heavily processed. The shot of the city with the river has been desaturated, and the shot next to it was brought into Photoshop so that I could push the clouds much harder while still trying to keep some detail on the lower half of the image. I needed more control then what LR 1.3 offers (need to upgrade to version 2).

And in case anyone is curious, these images were taken with my Sony a100, and these shots in particular were taken with a Minolta 50mm 1.7.

Here are two shots taken in January, using a Canon PowerShot SD750 that I'm running CHDK Raw (to allow taking RAW images and do some time lapse images) but these were jpegs processed in Lightroom.

Nikon D3, 300 2.8, shot around ISO2000-2500, shutter at 1/500th.

Shot at the Powerade Centre in Brampton, home of the OHL Brampton Battalion.

Was a fairly decent lit arena, despite only having 75% of the lights on, due to it just being high school. Another 2 games today.

I believe some of these pictures need a copyright or water mark printed to it before some companies start digging this thread up and stealing them for their own use. On the other note, well done photographers, most of the pictures are very professional...:eek::eek:

took this picture with a canon 18-55mm kit lens on a rebel XT for a photography contest for Skills Canada. Anyway, I didn't win anything. The contest was pretty rigged there, the judges were teachers from different schools supporting their own students lol!. oh well. probably the best shot i've ever taken.

Any standard lens can take a photo like that - you just have to get close to the subject or enable macro mode on your P&S. I never understood why people ask "what lens did you use" for standard composition photo such as ones you quoted...

sorry if I have offended you, but i was curious because my only lens, 28-135, doesnt allow me to get too close to the subject. My camera doesnt even snap a picture. I'm a noob to this so i was curious.

^ Try zooming into it from further away. Also, try manual focus if you can't take the picture when you're close.

Some more with my 50mm f1.8. I think I'm starting to get the hang of it.

Thanks for the tip. I have a D40 and have to manually focus so I'm still trying to get a hang of focusing accurately. I do have another pic where I'm focused on the eyes but I didn't like the angle as much.

naw, not at all, relax.. ;) Point I was trying to get across is, not everything is about the lens, sometimes it's as simple as composition and physical position of the photographer to get the shot. You can duplicate the shot in question with any standard lens really. It's your standard flower shot, nothing spectacular.

The gear will only be as good as the photographer... What I've learned in my times of training from other pro photographer is: "the photographer takes the picture, not the camera." Remember that always and you'll be fine. :)

The photographer and camera are hopelessly entangled and inseparable. Claiming otherwise is incorrect.

Plus all the guy did was ask what kind of lens it was. Why do you care what people find interesting? Why do you assume he wanted to know the lens for the composure aspect, maybe it was for the vibrant color or the bokeh.

The big day of the Vogue Charity Fashion show at my university finally came. This year the venue was a lot larger and we were able to hold the show at the newly renovated Grand Theater in Kingston Ontario. The show was a lot harder to shoot as it was no longer a single long runway but it was now the whole stage plus a weird “C-shape” runway. It made for a good show but boy does it make things more difficulty for the photographers. Instead of posing at the end of the runway the models posed EVERYWHERE (as there was no literal end to this runway). In the end the lighting was decent, got some good images out of it, had fun, and raised a ton of money for Camp Outlook (http://www.campoutlook.ca/) who are an organization that provides at-risk and underprivileged children a chance to experience wilderness camping!

You can post process it in CS4. Question, how come the first photo there's a glitter in his eye but in the second one there isn't? Do you have a hotshoe flash or using the onboard?

Alternatively, using a soft brush you can manually add the glitter in the second pic...also, play around with the Curves function to add "pop" to the photo, as its a bit flat right now.

I had an sb-600 and a shoot through umbrella off-camera fired via CLS/iTTL in the camera left (left side of the picture). First one had glitter because i was practicing doing the brightening the eye technique. The second picture I didn't do the eye technique and I think its because I light was being fired from the back so his eyes didn't reflect the flash/umbrella.

I did use the curves on lightroom for the second pic but the picture got too dark for my liking. Maybe I should try a curve layering mask on just the face(if that makes any sense, I'm new to this photoshop talk). I'll retry on the 2nd pic and re-upload.

EDIT:

Here's my second attempt

18mm

ISO 100

2x SB600 in camera left and right @ full power fired via CLS/iTTL (I just feathered him though :( he didn't jump in the correct spot. I fixed it in Lightroom and Photoshop. Then some Unsharp Mask. That's it.

opinions appreciated!

First one reminds me of a male athlete's cup - hahahaha.. good angle!

Second one is good as well, but - it is a little bit underexposed. Your camera metered the white and did not correct the proper exposure of the background, this is a common mistake most people make, myself included. In situations like this when shooting white on black background, you have to bump the exposure up to get it properly lit. I know because that Lambo was at last year's auto show too, see how the grills on the sides - you can't see the detail at all!

Try running second one through Photoshop's Shadows & Highlights function to correct it.

Hmmm.. I only see one photo? Not bad. I can see that where you are trying to go with your composition! Personally I think PP and retouching is entirely needed with digital photos. With film a lot of the PP and retouching was done by the person developing your film at the lab, so Photoshop is just a natural transition to the digital world.

I have nothing to put in my stew, you see,
Not a bone or a bean or a black-eyed pea,
So I'll just climb in the pot to see
If I can make a stew out of me.
I'll put in some pepper and salt and I'll sit
In the bubbling water - I won't scream a bit.
I'll sing while i simmer, I'll smile while I'm stewing,
I'll taste myself often to see how i'm doing.
I'll stir me around with this big wooden spoon
And serve myself up at a quarter to noon.
So bring out your stew bowls,
You gobblers and snackers.
Farewell - and I hope you enjoy me with crackers!

It's a style inspired by a couple of other photographers' work I've seen around - just played around in Lightroom to until I got the look I wanted - although the settings very depending on the photo. I find it's almost easier to get the look with slightly over exposed images.

Also, finally upgraded to Lightroom 2 and I really do like it - great app.

all with natural light. Wouldve liked a reflector but I couldn't find any assistants in time to help me hold them. I did try some straight on fill flash but didn't like those shots as much. I would love to shoot more flash work but for the wedding/engagement stuff I've been doing I have found natural light allows me to focus on the couple more.

Recently my camera has been glued to a Canon 70-200mm F2.8l IS. My bsack and shoulders do not appreciate this. ;)

Yeah, wonderful sport shots, Kitz. Looks like the ones we'd see on baseball cards and in newspapers.

what?!

XT with cheapo $300 17-85?

You are insane my friend, insane. There's no other way to describe it.
wow, I feel so wasted by having D300 (no, i didn't buy it because it costs 3 times as much as XT and therefore pictures come out 3 times better and 3 times sharper)...but because i like the way it feels in hands, already had D90 and wanted some weather sealing, D300 was like a logical choice.
But damn man, shows how much skill you have, by doing those type of shots from a 5 year old camera and $300 lens

no doubt, the picture quality came out great, that's because there's nothing to compare to. I'm sure if he shoots the same pictures with a 5D or a 1D MKIII with a 24-70mm, it would look even better!

I've said it before and I'll say it again. The Canon 17-85mm is a great beginner learning lens. It takes pictures fine if you know what you are working with. A lot of the newbies think they have to drop $1000+ on a lens for great photos - not true.

I favor the 50mm F1.8 these days in the studio and that's a $100 lens that I paid for. I like it because its light - i don't have to zoom I just have to pose and position myself for a great photo.

But thanks for the comments guys. I'll admit I miss the Rebel XT on long days where I've lugged around a 9 pound lens+camera for 8 hours straight. (body with grip, and a heavy telephoto or another mid-range zoom)

It certainly is a great lens for beginner use as well as walk around.

I LOVED the focal length, as well as IS.
Hated the speed of it, after buying my 70-200 F/2.8, I got addicted to constant aperture zooms :D

Shame however, I bought my 18-50 F/2.8 (again with the constant aperture addiction :cheesygri), my 17-85 broke itself the same day my 18-50 came in the mail...
Zoom ring started sticking, and eventually something broke off inside... it's a long story. I prefer not to go into it.

FML. $330 went poof. Just like that.
Thanks Canon for the awesome build of the 17-85. Love you lots <3

I personally hate zooms. I get lazy with one. BUT with all the 50mm lens I find there is weird distortion when you get close to the subject's face with one. It's a great 3/4 length lens but not the best for head shots!
