I just got an email from Future Shop about their "7 Days of Online Deals". Trying to copy Dell I see ;)

Anyways, the Day 1 deal is:

I bought the Athena Micra 6 in a package with the Harman Kardon AVR 130. It's pretty well a high quality entry level surround system. Down side No component video inputs - only S-Video Only 2 S-video inputs on rear panel - the 3rd is in the front (which is where I have to plug in my X-box). When I move up to HDTV, I'll have to route the HD signal directly to my set and bypass the video switching in the receiver - which may be a pain. Up side The speakers although small are extremely nicely balanced. The subwoofer has a variable crossover switch that makes it really easy to balance the low end. Occasionally I long for a little more focused bottom end in the rear channels - but it's a small sacrifice based on the price equation. The sound quality is exceptional. Granted the HK 130 gives a very clean, full output, but the speakers bring the sounds to life very nicely. I understand matching stands for these speakers are available, but I was unable to find them anywhere, so I just used generic stands for the rear. The fronts I screw mounted with the included brackets to the wall. Very easy to do, and the small size made the very unobstrusive. If you have a smaller size room (mine is about 12 x 15), I think you'll find these speakers to be a bargain. I got the receiver and speakers in a package for under $800 at Future Shop.

Yea, copying Dell here. Or else they wouldn't have chosen the last day of Dell's Deals to start their own. Oh well, at least FS has free shipping all the time, so no worries about having to pay it. And FS doesn't say anything about limited quantity about this sale.

$300 is dirt cheap... those $300 home theater in a box are absolute garbage... the average price for descent home theater speakers is about $1500 -$2000 (paradigm, infinity, Definitive technology, etc...)

You don't judge fidelity by loudness. They are probably as "loud" as the HTIB speaker sets, but sound much nicer, have much truer representation of sound and are well built.

That's where the difference is. Of course they will also distort less, produce lower frequencies better etc. etc..

You guys thinking of price matching should forget it. They seem to be getting wiser about that, I put the Samsung 930b LCD in my cart last night when it was $529, and this morning that FS has it for $499, they've dropped it to FS price. I figure they'll do that with every FS item.

That's why, those combos are killer. $200-300 combo vs $500-1000 seperate pieces.

The Micras are good speakers. It may seem like a lesser value than a $300 receiver/5.1 speaker set combo, but keep in mind that after the manufacturer's, distributor's and retailer's margins, that company (Yamaha, Panasonic, JVC... etc) is only investing about a $100 into 5 speakers and a subwoofer, whereas Athena is spending at least 3x as much (the Micra usually retail for about $600-700). The Micras aren't an intro-level small speaker, you're getting better materials, far better build quality, and ultimately better sound. However, as mentioned, small speakers are better suited to small rooms or for people who want their AV gear to be as invisible as possible in their living rooms (you know those people who'll hide a $5000 plasma TV in an armoire).


I wonder if FS is going to pull their random restockings throughout the day like they usually do during their boxing day sales? Could be something to watch out for during their "7 days" sale.

H&K has a set for $300 as well... looks better than this advertised set but not as highly discounted. Good reviews as well. Check it out. Too bad I'm a bit 'strapped' for cash right now... I would have bout this Athena combo and the Pany X50. Doh!

Aside perhaps from Onkyo, I seriously doubt you'll be able to find any manufacturers who sell their HTIB receivers seperately for they wouldn't even compare favourably with that manufacturer's base offering (example: a receiver included in a $400 Panasonic HTIB wouldn't match, or even come close to their entry level SA-XR30 digital receiver). If you were to compare any value HTIB receiver to the new* 6.1 receiver value champ, the Pioneer VSX-D515 (selling for about $249 at BB a week or two ago), you'd very quickly notice that it has at least twice the features, connections at the back and power, and superior build quality. Not to mention that the Pioneer comes with auto-calibration tools that you won't find with any HTIB.

Now granted, any value HTIB will be a BIG improvement over using your television's speakers, but don't deceive yourself into thinking that a further BIG improvement can't be made by investing a few more hundred dollars into superior equipment.

Why not just pick this one up and compare for yourself? That's probably the best way.

Personally, I've been impressed with my Athena's sound and build quality, but they're from the Audition Series, not this set.

Well, given that the response from the RFD boys was so quick, I would assume that FS is watching this site with great interest.

Nice start boys (not quite a "bang", maybe a "pop") but the next few days your deals are lacking. If your trying to imitate Dell, your about to do a better job than you think (read the Dell threads regarding the boo's and hiss'es about most of their deals for the last 10 days).

RFD has to worry about being sued by a big ass multi-national like Best Buy/FS. If PN/GFL wants to allow the post that's their show.
