The opthamologist that gave me my new prescription said that I can't just go to any place to get lenses or glasses. He was implying that some of them are shady and don't do quality work, so they can't be trusted. He was rhyming off where to go and not go. I don't remember all of the places he said not to go, but I remember he said not to go any place in Durham. He didn't recommend many places where I COULD go. The only place I remember him saying is the one in his building downstairs.

Is there any truth to this? I know there are obviously places that are suspect, but with all of the places he was mentioning (especially when he said not to go to any place in Durham) it had me wondering. I was thinking maybe he was just saying all of this because he's affiliated with the place in his building and he wanted me to go there. He seems pretty reputable though.

Any advice where to go, what kind of lenses etc.?

Just shop around. You'll find out soon enough what they're supposed to cost.

probably because he makes money if his client buys the glasses from the shop in his building?

there are *some* truth to it, places like Fuji... you can just forget about it. Since these are regular frame glasses, I suppose u can go anywhere that's not shady looking. Costco, etc. But for contacts I usually stay with ordering at my optometrist place, because contacts are more delicate to the eyes and require lots of attention if your eyes are sensitive/vulnerable etc, and ordering there would reduce TONS of hassles because they know exactly what they gave you and can treat you with efficiency if anything does happen.

it doesnt matter with contacts since they come sealed. once you have a brand you like you can get those anywhere.

i'ld say there is some element of truth in his claims, but i doubt -all- of duram can't be trusted.

What? I don't know how a place can really be shady unless they use counterfeit products. Glasses (or plastic/polycarbonate) are cut by the manufacturer (so you give them the frame you're using). I would say just pick a good manufacturer (Zeiss or Nikon). And depending on what your prescription is and what your budget is, you get higher index lenses (the higher the index the thinner they are...and more expensive).

I'm guessing by lenses you're referring to lenses that fit in a frame (glasses) and not contact lenses.
