I think its about time they crack down on this. I even started a thread talking about this because just in the last 4 weeks i've noticed A LOT of this bashing of other members.

I just read a thread about a guy asking what to buy for his GF and it turned into making fun of him and his GF.

Is this seriously what RFD has turned into?

I believe this is happening because the mods are to held back and are easy on the rules, but i do hope this washes out the flamers of the board and creates an clean forum to feel free to ask what you want and not worry about being harassed

In recent weeks the general quality of debate in Off-topic has degraded into name calling and personal attacks. This will not continue. In the interest of maintaining a positive environment, we have decided to enforce strict new penalties for those who would rather sling insults than share deals. There will no longer be a warning sent to those who personally attack another member or hurl hate filled messages at groups of people. The penalties for making such an attack either through a post, signature or through the private messaging system are now as follows:

1st Offence: 3 day ban
2nd Offence: 14 day ban
3rd Offence: 30 day ban
4th Offence: Permanent ban

If you are banned, you will be sent an email explaining the ban and duration.

In extreme cases a harsher penalty may be delivered even if it is only a 1st or 2nd offence.

Posts from before 8 PM EST, June 15 will be given amnesty, but all posts from this point on will fall under the new penalty scheme. Not seeing this message is no excuse.

eh...it's merely a knee jerk reaction and not a real solution. how else to explain the moronic threads that are allowed to exist like 'post the ugliest pic' thread. so it's ok to make fun of others just as long as they don't have an rfd account

No of course not, thats not right either. Thats just liek going to hotornot.com finding an someone labled "ugly" them one day maybe to become a member of RFD and be insulted by it if to have ever seen that thread.

This is only the beginning yes but rules i think are going to start cracking down and hopefully it will wash out the people who find it some how "fun" to insult others or make fun of them.

People don't know the power of an insult or harrassing someone until it goes to far. I remember reading the Sun about 3 years ago about a kid who killed himself because he was always teased.

I don't care who says he should just suck it up, its only words etc... people react, and with the reaction given comes feelings even if you don't know them. Just as you'd give the finger to someone who badly cut you off on the road, same as someone getting very upset for being flamed about asking a question about what to buy for his GF.

Maybe its just me, but i feel the BS that i see around here flaming other members and even guest or future members or people we don't know in general should be stopped.

The people who do it only do it because it makes them feel special i've noticed, as long as its not them getting made fun of, lets make fun of the next runt of the group

Agreed. IMO, we need stricter enforcement of the rules. :(

Good luck with stricter rules.. so what if you start banning people and closing their accounts, it's not difficult to make a new account.. and since you just made a new account, you would have even less respect for it.

Since RFD is Canadian.. unless you have a completely static IP, it's going to be very difficult for the admins to keep anyone out, as they can't ban entire ISP's or specific locations of ISP's.

For instance.. a troll is from Toronto-HSE-ppp******.sympatico.ca, now how the heck are you going to ban that person? It's a dynamic IP.. it's from Sympatico.. and it's from Toronto! There must be thousands of other users with the same location.

So they make a new account.. cause trouble, get their account closed.. and make a new account the next day! Heck people could even keep their legit accounts safe by not posting under them, except for transactions.. while maintain a secondary account to troll under.

Anyway, my ranting is that increased control such as closing accounts will do little but make the crazies crazier! It's just a cheap attempt for the admin/moderating team to attempt to slack off on their duties... threaten RFD'ers into submission...

Will it work?

i kinda enjoyed observing the flaming and thread crapping. It made for light entertainment on an otherwise boring day. It got things going and sarcasm flying.

I admit I participated in some and was the object of some, but who the f. takes it seriously anyways.

it's not as fun with the Mod Squad policing us. everyone is afraid to say what is on their minds now. I had to hold back a few comments I wish i could have made.

the problems lie when people don't know where to draw the line.

c'mon though, sure some things may be funny... But flaming a guy over asking what to buy his GF (even if its a good or bad question) He shouldn't have been made fun of over that.

Edit: And even being told not to buy her much as they basicly wont last... who says the wont last? You can never tell, and never will. I can tell you that you will be a bad parent cause of they way you treat other kids on here BUT a lot of the time when you see your baby for the first time your a different person

He is only ONE example out of many im sure many have seen around here, and it has gotten out of hand.

Some things are funny to us who read, but think of the person who your making fun of. Doesn't matter who should or shouldn't take it seriously. Its not a matter of taking it to heart but a matter of respecting ourselfs isn't it?

Respect goes a long way in life and if it comes to members disrespecting others what kind of enviorment are we showing around here?

Touche.

I think what I am going to do to make browsing RFD more enjoyable is to start using the ignore list. >:(

I think what I am going to do to make browsing RFD more enjoyable is to start using the ignore list. >:(
Amen!

For instance.. you don't like what I say or that I post too much.. slap me on ignore, it won't hurt my feelings.. and it'll just save the mods time dealing with your cry baby threads and private messages.. WAHHHHHH!

Of course it's one thing to block someone who's just plain annoying like me.. and another thing to have someone who is completely offensive with vulgarity, being sexist or racist...or any of those other untolerables. Those kinds of acts should not continue or be left unresolved.

Although the ignore works for those types as well, I'm not condoning their acts. I'm only condoning myself and the other regular annoying people (you know who you are) who have something to say about everything, because we don't have anything better to do! :D

Your missing the point though lol...
Your ignore list, prevents you from seeing it, thats all fine and dandy.

Now the visitors coming to this site to see all of it isn't the best idea. I don't think when they join first thing they think of is ok lets look around for whom to ignore.

Then they ask questions as would and have anyone else and are flamed and stop using RFD which has no caused 1 less new person.

Doesn't really matter if its 1 or 10, the ratio of people to join per year adds up

Oh we missed the point.. what's the point?

That we should moderate ourselves? That we should be responsible RFD'ers and act/speak accordingly?

Ummm.. wasn't that the old policy? You know.. the old policy that apparently didn't work?

Settle down bor3d.. you're assuming he's trying offend your thread, when he could very well be complimenting it.

Gay: Showing or characterized by cheerfulness and lighthearted excitement; merry.

Why do people jump to conclusions all the time? ;)

Perhaps RFD doesn't need more rules, it just needs less hyper-sensitives. :cheesygri

Yeah I agree with v00d00. How many times have I been on a board and people start complaining "Remember the good old days when no one flamed and blah blah blah new members blah blah"

I have heard it millions of times. The fact is, every large board on the internet is like that. You just have to learn to wade thru the BS and move on. If you are cncerned about it, then when a newbie comes and asks a question, answer it. That's the best thing you can do. Starting threads like this one is useless...do you think anyone you have a problem with is going to come in and say "oh my god...what have i been doing! I VOW TO CHANGE!"

v00d00
Jun 24th, 2005, 09:48 AM
LoL.. exactly.

Hey remember the good old days? Back when we were all cocky nerds who thought we knew everything about nothing and used to gang up on certain people just to make us feel cool and less like the losers we were cast as at school?

Yeah nothings really changed from the old days.. except maybe the volume of people and perhaps the diversity. At least now we're not ALL a bunch of nerdy white kids staying up late on the internet in our parents basement on the computers they bought us.

settle down? I never got worked up? Your over-reading. Again i don't care how many times you read stuff like this. I could also complain about how sick i am of things you do as well (not you v00d00) but i don't.

Its a thread that i find it about time for this rule and the members around here STILL find a way to act 8 years old.
