sweet cherries at Food Basics.....1.97 lb

Are the ones at ED Smith sour?

Cherries for cooking/baking very expensive.
A good cherry pie aint cheap......if you can find one.

The ones that crack me up r the ones they sell for 2-3 $...that have maybe 12 cherries to the pie...2 per slice and lots of corn starch.

why are they weighing cherries by "litre"?They're measuring by volume, not by weight.

It looks like it's cheaper to buy the pre-picked cherries:
http://www.edsmithfarms.com/prepicked.htm

But I guess if you get the pre-picked, then you can't...errr..."cherry pick" the best ones.

I love cherries. Look forward to cherry season every year and then pig out on them. Got some in the fridge right now. They're relatively cheap (and of decent quality) right now at the local Sobeys. The one's at Fortinos aren't as good. Cherry pickin' would make for a decent day out.

I've been a couple of times to the Winona Peach Festival. That's good, too. They've got peach everything. Mmm-mm.

Actually they are not measureing by volume really. They are selling it by the basket. Big basket $26 per basket, small one $20 per basket with $4 discount for the admission/basket. Definitely more worth it w/ the big basket, but you have to pick for quiet a while to fill it up. You can fill as much as you think it will fit in that basket. It comes to about 11lb quiet acurately (I measured it after I came home). give or take a little if you fill it up really high heh. I just came back from there today. It's not about the price, heh. With the gas and the price, I'd better buy them elsewhere. Think of it as just a once in a while activity and at the end of it, you get two big basket of cherries instead. :cheesygri :cheesygri

its a cherry WAR. get ready for lots of pushing and shoving... always a fun time at ED Smith at the Cherry WAR. It's cheaper to buy it at Loblaws, but not half as fun :)

would they notice if you were somehow----sneaking a few cherries here and there to test them out?

could make for a tasty outing if you wanted to pig out while you pick cherries!

too bad its not near me, we have lots of sugarbushes here though....

LOL I doubt they have guards on watch towers ready to pounce on someone that sticks one of these in their mouth. You might not want to eat them unwashed though, since it's probably covered in pesticides.

That's great there are still U-pick places. Many of the ones in B.C. don't allow people to pick anymore because trees were getting damaged (people pulling off branches), dropping fruit all over the ground, etc.

I just went to E.D. Smith Farm to pick cherries on friday! It was loads of fun. If you do go, make sure you talk to the guys who work in the orchard, they'll point you to the best trees with the sweetest cherries. I even found the one tree that grew white cherries too!

I did just this whole day in a hot saturaday afternoon, my kid enjoyed it, and we bought the 26L basket....we basically go under a tree and try out if the cherries are sweet enough or not before we start picking....it is fun I suppose..

What does this admission fee cover? Is there a petting zoo or other kid's attractions? It seems like there should be more than cherry picking to justify a trip.

I tried to find this place, but couldn't see a Green Lane anywhere off off Ontario St. I went all the way to one end which T'd with Main St, then went all the way to the other end which ended with Lake St. I ended up going to E.D. Smiths...

A few things of note ...

1. When you go in, there is a guy checking all bags in case you are bringing in guns or bombs and stuff, you know how the terrorists like to frequent the cherry farms.

2. There are multiple signs in many languages stating the rules. No bags, no cans, no bottles, no overfilling, no eating, no picnicing, no picking cherries, etc. and each person you meet will re-iterate these rules to you.

3. The "free" $4/person tractor ride only leaves the main gate when there are customers waiting to go to the trees. If you happen to be at the tree end, you better hope there is a constant flow of incoming pickers, unless you want to walk back or wait a while for the next tractor.

4. There is a midget at the exit gate to make sure you didn't overfill your $26 basket. By overfill they mean anything above the rim of the basket. I was kind of harassing him and he basically let us go with our "overfilled" basket. I don't know, but to me, if they are selling by the basket, I should be able to fill as much as I can without the cherries falling out. Any falling cherries would be the overfill. The midget has a ruler to level out your basket and push out any offending cherries.

5. If you have more than 2 adults, you must purchase at least 1 basket per every 2 adults.

I would say if you can find the mysterious cherry avenue place, go there instead.

$1.80 a pound hardly seems worth for going through the trouble of picking it yourself for. Here, the local supermarket sells cherries for $1.89 a pound. I guess if you like to munch while you pick (pesticide alert), then it might be worth it.

I believe that Real Canadian Superstore has them on sale for ~1.47 starting tomorrow, but this could be different in your area. You do have to pick them, but only from the cardboard container.

Yeah, picking yourself is definitely NOT economical, but more for the enjoyment and also being able to pick the best ones. They do post that sign there stating no eating, but there are no oopaloompas posted at the trees, they would much rather lazily stand around the main building searching purses and bags and making sure you don't overfill your basket upon exit. I wouldn't be suriprised if they checked your bag when you left to make sure you didn't stash any cherries in there either.

That being said, we did bring some tissues to wipe clean as best we could any cherries we tasted before we started picking to make sure the tree was sweet. However, a lot of cherries do have a white dried on substance on them. Probably pesticide residue as many cherries do have little worms burrowing holes and living inside.

We found that the best (i.e. largest and darkest) cherries are found on trees that have the thickest trunk and with lots of sap oozing from the trunk and branches. Extra sap oozing out usually indicates the tree has tons of stored sugars. Also grab the ladders and go as high as you can. Most of the pickers are lazy and only walk around and pick what they can reach. Most of our 7L pail was filled at just one tree by climing higher up.

Apparently all the cherry farms were picked clean by RFD members after last weekend.
Went by yesterday to Cherry Ave Farm and was told there were no more cherries to pick.

Went by several other farms and was told the same.

I guess this deal is dead.

Gonna have to bring the family to Super Store for this year cherry picking outing... :D

This is pure genius. Not only do they charge you for the cherries. They charge admission. They don't have to pay someone to pick em, and they make more money to boot.

I did this as a summer job, I got to the point where I could pick 100lbs an hour. Made about $22.50 an hour 8 hours a day, for about 20 days. Not bad for a 14 year old at the time.

Do you know why they are minority groups? Because they are first generation immigrants, and they are the only ones who seem to be willing to do this work. In BC the labour pool for fruit picking jobs is drying up so fast that most farmers are worried about their livelihood, because, if they aren't picked, they have no value....which is why we now have a guest worker program for people from mexico.

Give that some thought.

hmm..that wasn't what I mean though..I was just saying there's a big difference between minority groups and the mainstream IN TERMS OF interests.

On the very same day I went to Niagara then some wineries right after cherry picking. I swear 90% of those I saw there were caucasians. That's when I began pondering my question above.

That's because they don't have cherry farms (or strawberry, or peaches) in their home countries so it is kind of fun to do. By the same token, when I went to the tropical fruit farms in Malaysia last year, a majority of the visitors there were caucasians.

I've been to Cherry Ave Farms a few times but never for cherries :P So even though they're out, don't forget that plum, apricot and peach season is coming up. The peaches I picked there were way sweeter than grocery store peaches. I also like Cherry Ave Farms because you can bring your dog and my dog loves it there :)
