View Full Version : FS $299 HDTV Cable Box for SHAW + $50 Gift Card

For Shaw subscribers, FS has the Motorola 6200 HD cable box for only $299, that's a discount of about $100- you also get a free $50 GC to go with it! Programming credits for new customers still apply, so you can get the box for $299 plus the $50 FS GC AND receive $159 in programming credits if you are a new customer! I argued with Shaw to get programming credits as an exsisting cutomer and failed 3 times. Shaw still sells the box for $398.88. The only downside is that Shaw only has 7 HD channels but they are FREE. 6 if not including the subscription-only Movie Central. They plan to expand their line-up within the year. (hopefully :))

Is this in a flyer or did you just see it in store? I don't know if I want to get this or go for the PVR for the viewsonic from costco...

this is tried and true, $299 rings up. The PVR is nice but much too expensive, I'd risk some time to tweak a satellite and use the Bell HD PVR for much less. You get little reception problems if you aim your dish correctly and/or get a larger dish.

wow, this is a pretty good deal, if you already have an account, you can always set up another under another name in the household and then transfer your equipment over to that name after you get the 159 in free progamming

isn't the deal $399 minus 100 programming credit?
how come people sound's like it's 299 minus 159 programming credit

Hmm so digital cable costs $22 more than basic cable when bundled with High Speed internet.

Yeah that's what I want to know. That picture shows it's 399 regular price and then minus the 159 for credits for NEW subscribers. Where does it state it's -$100 for regular Shaw digital customers to make it $299?

There's discussion in this thread (http://www.digitalhomecanada.com/forum/showthread.php?t=27243) to the effect that the ad is very misleading because Shaw doesn't offer those channels in HD, from what I can gather. Caveat emptor. Or I could be talking out of my ass. Or both. :D

Fox was recently added to the Shaw HD line up. Maybe TSN and CTV are next in line.

Just got home from FS....it is true. With tax, I paid $320...then minus $160 for program credits = $160...then -$50 gift card = $110.

I am very surprised that this is how it work, but it did!!!!

Just too bad they didn't do something similar on the PVR which is still way too expensive!!!

Wow...that's really tempting...I've been debating between this and the PVR model for awhile now, but I think this is tipping the scales...

Sounds great!

As for the box: does it have a DVI-D/HDMI output for HD? Or, does it use component (3 RCA plugs) connections for 1080i HD?

Thanks!

it has component, rca, s-video, dvi outputs,
also nothing is filmed yet in 1080i,

mostly 720p and 720i

This quote is may be incorrect. DVD movies are currently capable of 480P. Upconverting DVD players (waste of money) convert these 480P movies to 720P or 1080i. 720P and 1080i is practically undistinguishable, some prefer one over the other. There is no such thing as 720i. HD-DVD's and Blu-ray discs come out around the end of the year and carry movies in true HD. The PS3 should be capable of 1080P, very few TV's currently support it though.

The sale price (maybe it's not a sale?) is $299 and if you are a new customer, you get additional credits. The ad is VERY misleading. There is no CTV or TSN HD, just FOX HD. Then again, this could just be smart advertising because it doesn't say CTV, TSN, FOX HD, just CTV, TSN, FOX. Get it?

DVI works. Also, firewire outputs work, so you can kind of use your PC as a PVR. I found this article on the digitalhomecanada.com forums: http://replayguide.sourceforge.net/dct6412/index.html#Setting_up_for_drivers_for_DCT6412
Just bought a firewire card/cable off eBay for $20. The DCT6412, 6208, are iidentical to the 6200, the 6208 being the 80GIG single-tuner PVR while the 6412 is the 160GIG dual-tuner PVR.

Do you think this can be applied to the Bell Expressvu trade-in programme? Shaw says that they will offer a $200 credit for my Expressvu receiver, so would the price be $300 - $200 trade-in credit - $50 Futureshop GC - useless programming credits that I do not care about :D = $50 out of my pockets?

BTW, can I apply the $50 GC to the purchase, or would I have to buy + buy another using GC + return?

Thanks in advance!

The other thing...that I am pretty sure this just happened today...they added FOX Seattle and SportsNet to the HD lineup...at least in Calgary...

I got home from Stampede tonight and can't stop playing with this thing!!!!!

It has all the DVI, Component, Coax Audio out, Optical out, etc...it also comes with 3 USB and 2 Firewire...after talking to Shaw today, the 1394's and USB are future product updates, and have no use right now.

I just hooked up my iBook via Firewire and went and found a PVR app...it recorded just fine...now, I just have to get it DVD. The app I am using is called iRecorder...it only lets you save in .m2t...playback was easy enough.

i dont think so, since you are buying it from a third party retailer, and the trade in is offered directly thru shaw,

Just a heads-up for ppl in the GVA.

I tried to get this deal at the Union street location in Coquitlam but they wouldn't do it. The guy said it was a mistake. That it the $100 was a typo for the programming credits because when scanned it shows up as $399. This, even though if you hover over the ad on the online flyer, it clearly says "you pay $299".

So, not one to take no for an answer. I immediately went to the Metrotown location. They actually had the price tagged on the shelf as such: $399 - $100 Instant Savings - $159 Programming Credits. When he scanned the box it didn't show the $100 Instant Savings (like at the Union St. location), so he just used the codes from the tag on the shelf, and viola! I got the deal. The only snag was that the computer and the tag did not show the $50 GC. So I just showed it to him in the flyer and he threw that in too. :)

Great deal. Thanks to the original poster. And anyone that wants this should do it asap. The deal expires tomorrow (the 14th).

If they won't give it to you.. Tell them to print out their "80 - 20 notes" for home theatre. They'll know what you're talking about. Tell them that the deal is on their 80/20 notes. 80/20 notes are basically unadvertised special prices that sales people are authorized to give out.

Just mention the 80/20 notes, and they'll definately give you the deal. However, July 14th is the last day to take advantage of this deal.

I work in the home theatre department.. that's how I know about the $299 w/gift card deal.

Guys, I'm guessing the HDTV cable box that we're talking about here is the Motorola 6415? This cable box will receive digital TV as well as HDTV? I gotta admit though, Shaw's HDTV lineup is pretty bad.

Edit: oops, I just checked the first post, it's the 6200. Doh my bad :(. Just wondering if anyone managed to get Shaw's newest HDTV box for this price?

So, I am curious...is this 80/20 thing something that cud be mentioned during any purchase, just in case there is a deal? Or something that shud just be used when absolutely everything else fails, or....???

This is making me wonder about getting shaw instead of Bell.

I would get bell but my apartment faces west and I cant get the 132 deg that bell requires (damn cause that 9220 deal on the website is sooo sweet).

399.99 - 100 Programming - 56.99 PPV Credits - 50 = 193 if all credits are used.

Damn that is a pretty good deal. What is the catch? Is this reciever crap, are they dropping the PVR model soon what?

Catch?? Having the thing for half price PLUS free HDTV channels (you just pay for digital cable, $20+ analog), Bell sounds like a catch compared to this. The unit it self is identical to the other Moto PVRs just minus the recording ability. If you're still looking for a PVR, this unit has useable firewire outputs for recording if hooked up to a pc.

Anyone thinking of price matching bestbuy with the $193 price?

Actually, it is: 399 - 100(instant savings) - 100(10 off your bill for ten months) - 59(PPV Credits) - 50 (GC) = 90 :)

Just got this for $299.99 with $50 gift card (plus $160 programming credits). The computer at FS was showing it at $399 (according to the guy there they'd already put the price back up), but after showing him the flyer (that showed it ending on the 14th) he agreed to "hack" the system to get the old price. Thanks to all the other posters for mentioning this deal!

"have you solved anything?"
