View Full Version : Staples PM Policy moving back to 110%

Yes, I know this is in the wrong section, but today I was talking to my manager and he said that discussions have been taking place about moving the PM policy from 150% back to 110%. He said that the changes should be seen in as little as three weeks from today!
This isnt a hot deal, but I figured I'd post it here as it'll have the largest impact on this forum.

Ah, crap.
110% still may be able to result in blockbuster PM's, probably ones that don't required them to pay us.
Back 110%, it was 110% before?

Heh heh - for me, too, actually, so I guess they won't really care if they lose me as a customer. Still, they do offer things you can't buy at FS - such as furniture that I would have eventually purchased - not to mention school supplies and office supplies. {Wal-mart, here I come, if Staples lowers their PM guarantee.}

Hearsay from a newbie.
Oh man, I finally noted the 'talking to MY manager' part - I originally thought it stated, talking to A store manager.
This could be another 'scare' from Staples to the RFD'ers who like to PM. I predict that the Staples PM of 150% remains in effect. God knows they make a HUGE profit; did any of you see the profit margins they make, when Trump announced it on The Apprentice for that one show where they spotlighted Staples? I have no qualms about getting good PM's from them; they are raking in the cash.

Good riddance ,I can finally save a few dollars. It was a stupid policy because of the tactics Staples used to not honor it.What an waste of manpower.
I suspect that Staples lost as many customers as they gained using it.
PS: I was also told by a Staples manager that the policy was on its way out.

This is so true. The policy was really designed to make the general public think they have the best prices, not to appease a bunch of buy only deals people from RFD. People they basically lost money too, and probably didn't shop there much anyhow.

First of all - Staples deals have never been HOT in a true sense because only a few could take the advantage of the item and not most of them.
Secondly, I couldn't care any less if Staples is moving back/forward to 110% PM Policy or even closing down their shutters forever because I know they will have hard time even to stand upto it.

I think it is ridiculous that so many people are upset and threatening to shop at staples anymore after using their PM policy over an extended period of time and getting deals FAR better than you could get at any other sale. Understandably, shoppers are fickle and want the best deals around, (which Staples may lack in overall without the PM) but I still think people should have some respect for the company that brought many many users on RFD a deal here and there. (I can think of that $120 - free wireless mouse/keyboard combo)
Pay respect to the company for keeping a policy that was probably more unprofitable than profitable for such a long period of time.

Jul 17th, 2005, 09:08 PM
I frankly wouldn't be surprised if it was happening. It's really of very little benefit to them, and just seen as a profit loss. It's not so much of an issue with items like cables or paper where the profit margins are huge to begin with, but something like a desktop, laptop, or camera where razor-thin profits are the norm, and they may already be losing money on regular sales. A big PM takes a big hit for the store.
That's another thing, most managers (some more than others), see a successful PM as a direct 'hit', an attack against the store, and them, by these cheap bastards swindling them with thier evil trickery, rather than a satisfied customer making good use of a voluntary, company-wide policy, created to improve customer satisfaction. Because of this, they respond to any whiff of a PM as they do.
-------Begin Speculation-------
My PREDICTION: They will go back to 110% right before the "Back To School" season (probably mid- to late-august). And even though it's being talked about in managers meetings right now, employees will get official notice no more than maybe a week before it happens, but the public won't notice until it's already underway. Probably they'll just quietly change the signs, and deal with the complaints and questions as they come in. I'll, of course, be forced to continually and repeatedly explain, and defend, this to dozens of bitter and confused customers over the next 6 months. They will, as per usual, use me as a scapegoat and I will be forced to patiently endure the brunt of thier frustration.
...Oh yes... this shall be fun....
-------End Speculation-------
The smart thing to do, if they wanted, would be to work thier way down to 100%, maybe jumping to 130 or 120 at first. That way they aren't getting as killed, but they still offer more than everyone else.
...but of course, the dinks at head office aren't that bright....
I'll see if i can find a tactful way to bring it up with my GM and see what she says....

This has been rumoured already for awhile.. why don't we wait until it actually happens before we have this discussion. The last rumour was that it was supposed to change in two weeks and that was two weeks ago yet nothing happened. Like others have said "I'll believe it when I see it". Also for the people that say they won't shop at Staples anymore, I completely agree with convoluted here and think you should show a little more respect for the store that got you some of the best deals even if they weren't perfect with honouring their policy 100% of the time. Just my 2 cents.
