Hard disk for video editing?

Anything special I should consider? I'll be using it to do video editing with Somy Vegas. Only the video / audio files will be on it, as well as the vegas project files stuff (and temporary files?).

I think I'll go for a SATA disk because my ATA but is getting full.


Taken from pccyber.ca, what would you get?

Should I go with western digital? JB/JD/JS ??? Or Seagate?

Is it worth having 16MB of buffer or is 8 enough? After all, I'll mostly be using big files, not tons of smaller files.

Each manufacturer has many hard disk lines, it's getting confusing!! :confused:

It depends on what kind of computer u have now. For harddrives overall ... the Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 10 and Wester Digital KS series are the best. 16MB of cache is worth getting (both above have it) ... if you getting a new computer you could spring for a Intel 955X chipset board and make up a nice RAID 5 array (3 drives, data protection, fast read, ok write).

I have an "old" Asus p4p800 with a P4 3GHz, 1GB dual channel.

I think my next computer will have a raid array, I'm getting worried about a HD crash...

My old system is basically the same as yours mart - I put in 2 seagate SATA 200s and they are working sweet. They were initially in RAID 0 but I moved them to JBOD for a little bit better security. Seagate tend to be pretty quite and a little bit cooler so thats why I wents that way, but 16mb cache is something to consider.

Mart, my personal experience is rather different then those expressed so far.
I've edited videos on 1.4Gig Athlon with an average WD 80gig drive, with lots of success. I've also edited videos on much faster machines, and the differences are only noticable once you have A LOT of video streams... Even then, all you get is a smoother preview of the final product.
The final render will of course be speed up by faster CPUs, but HD performance is not that crucial... Any average drive these days is miles better then the older drivers I've used with Vegas.

You say you're currently using Vegas.. What are you not happy with (in terms of performance)?

Since you're doing video, it's better off you go with pair of Wd 250G sata 2
and configure RAID0 for maxinum performance & storage space. Or if you want
speed, get 2x wd 74 raptor and RAID0 like me . LOL

Yeah, a nice pair of HD would be nice, but $$$ is the problem. I would have buy that when I was in university, but now with house / kid / wife and a new house on the way, I'll limit my budget! :razz:
