Computer Crashes with HL2 and BF2

hey guys... just wondering... what could be wrong with my computer... whenever I run hardware demanding games.... my computer crashes :S

my specs are: AMD Athlon 64+ 3200 nForce4 MCP Mobo, 2 x 512mb DDR400 and 160gig SATA150 (non-raid) running a X700 Pro


could it be that i dont got enough juice ? new power supply, since i only got a generic one :S

Definately sounds like PSU problems

(I learned my lesson years ago with a Tbird & GF2MX crashing with a ghetto generic PSU playing CS)

:arrowu: I agree. Never skimp on power supply. Using a no-name PSU is like driving a car with a no-name engine. Go get yourself a nice name brand (Antec, Enermax, Fortron, OCZ, etc. ) 350W PSU.

whats the wattage on ur current PS? do u OC? does it crash in other games or juss those two? updated drivers?

i think its like 350w ~!? i have no idea ....

but yeah... seems to be only those two games..... those two games are the only games i play that demand a lot of resources!!!

can someone explain to me why generic PSU are crap ? i mean if i buy a name brand PSU how does it differ ? and how does PSU make a game crash ?

i general tells me that my CPU/VPU dont get enough juice... therefore crash... anyone wanna help me a lil bit more in explaining ?

get a mobo sensor utility for your motherboard, should be on the driver CD

see what the rails are
also see what the temperatures are
and post them here

the CPU could be overheating too

to OP: What kind of crash? BSOD, rendering errors, auto restarts?

i use a generic PSU 350W taht came with my case.

I OC my AMD64 3000+ to 2.6ghz, i OC my 6600gt, I OC my Samsung ram, i have a 160gig HD, i run 4 80mm fans, i have neon lights, i havee a cd burner, all running at the same time and i get no probs. Even in games i have no probs. Ive used generic PSUs all my life and no probs.

Just like my friends computer with similar specs, it's the PSU. Don't cheap out by using a generic one.

the crash is basically a LOOP SOUND and frozen screen..........

after about 15 mins of playing HL2 or BF2 it would do that....

i have updated all my drivers for everything..... i also play WoW and theres no problem there (i play in windows mode)....


tempertures are fine as well: CPU fan working @ just over 3000 rpm and temps are @ 31c/86f

i didnt OC any of my hardware.....

new PSU guys ? and if so.... which one should i get ?

Before you run out and spend more money, try lowering RAM timings, or upping Vdimm. A64s can be very temptermental with RAM. Try running Memtest.

Also check in your PC's BIOS for temps and voltages.

While generic PSUs aren't great, they can be fine if you don't overclock.

Memtest is a self booting program that will run a series of tests on your RAM. Kind of like Prime95 or other CPU stress tests. http://www.memtest86.com/ If it errors out it could just mean you have too tight timings, or not enough voltage.

In the BIOS (probably a PC health section) look at:

-CPU temp (which you already have, looks OK)
-System temp

Also check 12v, 3.3V, 5V (positives) for readings... If anything is too low that would point to your PSU.

Check Vcore, Vdimm. If those are low, that could just point to a BIOS setting

for some reason i dont have a 5v reading....

my 12v and 3.3v readings are ok 12.111 and 3.260....

as for my Vcore its 1.42 watever that means :S

hmm i dont know... the game seems to be working OK now... i just lowered the settings... but still... that SUCKS !!!

anymore suggestions ?

Is your room warm? Summertime is bad for PCs with poor ventilation.

What motherboard do you have? There is probably a diagnostic util that will monitor your voltages and temps in windows and display warnings also.
