I just heard on the radio that gas is going up to $1.20 tonight.
I can't tell if its real or not but Q107 has gotten calls from people who work at gas stations telling them that it is going up drastically tonight.
I guess we'll wait to find out! (I filled up on the way home tonight)

wholesale gasoline (http://moneycentral.msn.com/content/CNBCTV/Articles/Dispatches/P127958.asp) up $.4174USD/gallon, which translates to $0.141CAD/L incl GST. Plus the typical long weekend gouge.... yup, that sounds about right

main reason is at 10 cents higher it won't produce lineups that impair traffic flow....they will get lots of complaints
the business account drivers during work hours have no difficulty charging at a higher price.

Nope - people are too bussy with their lives to really think that someone is really ripping them off! Canadians have no idea what revolution is all about, and certainly a revolt is out of the questions. What they may do is parade around, make some noise, then return back to their work to show up for their morning work shift working their asses off.
We need ALTERNATIVE fuel sources people! The government HAS to spend money for such reasearch, otherwise we will all work just to be able to drive our asses to work and home again...

I agree. The gov. not only needs to spend money for research but also, as a solution for now, subsidize the automobile manufactures to sell the fuel efficient cars (i.e. hybrids) at a lower affordable price (as affordable as regular cars or even cheaper). Meanwhile the manufactures should stop putting out huge SUVs or promote that soccer moms need minivans. We need alternative fuel sources, but how about taking the bus, walking or carpooling for now?...The gov. need a better plan for the public transportation system.

Meanwhile the manufactures should stop putting out huge SUVs
with the amount of money they make on SUVs that will never happen. people need to stop buying them, then they'll stop making them. but will never happen either. instead you get jerks like the guy who had a bummer sticker that said "My SUV raises gas prices for you!". Jerk.

...this is ludicrous, pretty soon there's going to be riots at the gas stations. When people can't afford gas & the cost of living is rising while pay levels are decreasing or remaining stagnant, this leads people to do straneg things.
There needs to be some sort of intervention revolution or boycott of all gas stations. My car is only 2 yrs old and when I first got it I remember buying gas for 0.64/L now the same gas cost me twice as much. WTF is that?
Anyone down for a group boycott?

As long as people buy gas at the price they are selling it at the price will exist. Gas at $1.20 sucks but it is the reality of life. Complaints don;t mean anything if the demand still exists. Higher prices for non-renewable forms of energy are inevitable. Don't like high gas prices in Toronto then take public transit. If the convenience of taking your car and paying for gas is worth it for you then you will pay for that convenience. Until the cost of driving outweighs the negatives of changing your lifestyle gas prices will continue to increase year over year. Having said that 20 cents overnight is a huge jump but if people will not curb their use even with that kind of a jump what do you expect to happen.

I don't agree what you said.
our economoy DEPENDS on gas. this is canada, almost everyone has their own car cuz we need it. It isn't like some huge city where the transportation system is so well done that there is virtually no need for cars. most people don't have the option to take public transit. If the gas company charges us $10/liter today, people will still buy it, cuz they HAVE to. Complaints do have a meaning, if the gas prices are to the point where it will severely affect the economy, gov't will steps in and do what they can to CHANGE. unfortunately, OPEC is a monopoly, they can charge whatever the hell they want...the only solution is for the govt to push research for alternative fuel sources.

Bingo! Wow! You're the only one with the right answer. :| It's not about the oil companies trying to profit off us for the long weekend, it's all about supply and demand. Take out a major oil rig damaged by Hurricane Katrina, factor in that developing countries China and India are consuming more gas then the world can currently supply, and you get a price increase. Simple as that...

Well said. Until we ALL switch to NON-gas using transportation, nothing will change. Also, we need to change those BIG gas users, like airplanes. I have no idea how much gas it uses, but I imagine one plane full of gas is quite a lot. Now multiply that by how many planes take off in a minute?
Maybe if somehow we all switch to hybrids, so hopefully use 1/2 as much gas, then that will cut into 1/2 of their normal gas profit, then gas companies will start to feel the pinch.
But as things go now, they will never need to do nothing to lower gas prices. ITs really a smart thing Middle East has done to the West. Freely distribute gas in the beginning, we all hook on cars, now they slowly raise prices without limit.

CNN reports that there's a good chance that gas in the US will be at $4/gallon by the end of the year. Considering it's averaging $2.81 now, and considering that we pay more for gas up here than down there, my forcast of $2.00/L next year might not only be reasonable, it may be conservative. If we assume that the ratio of their gas price to our gas price stays the same:
$2.81/G : $1.20/L
$4.00/G : $1.70/L (by year end.... :-O)

I am surprised that nobody said that they pay more in Europe as to justify these increases...
In only three/four months we had an almost 50% gas increase.
If governements do not see this as a problem then I dont know know what else will...
I also agree that it is time for governements to push car manufacturers to come up with alternatives to gas.
This charade that is oil market has to be curved.
Next week they will say that Bush is going to fart and create a shortfall of oil, and then comes winter and that demand will increase, and this cycle of increases never stops...
I can't live without a car, I need to drive to go to work, I need a car to go buy groceries, and YES I also need a car for entertainement as well.

Yeah the problem is the supply of oil. The big problem is that there are a LOT of things in our lives that rely on oil. A lot of plastics are made from oil, bags, etc. etc.
I'm hoping that this will push companies to look into alternate fuels and technologies, maybe even ones that might be a closer step to independence like hybrids ( temporary solution ) and biodiesel.
I have a feeling that Hybrid car sales will skyrocket in the next few months.

What's the big deal about gas prices anyways??
It's a free market and it's all about supply and demand. When the demand is high and the supply is low the price is going to go up. There's really not much you can do about it. The most you can do as as a consumer is whether or not you want to fill up. People are going to fill up even if that gas hits $2/L. Now when the gas hit's $10/L, well I'm pretty sure you'll be finding alternative means to get around.

it's a little more complicated than the simple d&s model. Gas supply is fixed in world and controlled by OPEC, transportation, and refinery issues.
but i agree with most of your response
ppl also fail to realize that yes most of Canadian gas suppliers/refinery/etc are not disrupted by transportation, or upply issues but petro is a world commodity. Suppliers in Canada can sell it at the highest bidder around the world. Cdn gas companies are making a KILLING and so is the FEDERAL GOVT where federal gas tax is on a variable rate. McFLY is shooting himself since Ontario gas tax is fixed per litre.

Yesterday, Mr. Martin touched on the thorny topic again, saying: "This country was not built on jealousy. . . . This country was built on working together."
Do you think Goodale is stupid enough to bite the hand that feeds him?

I believe you forgot to say who said it was good news that the PM and Goodale will not be bring back the NEP. No matter - I'm sure after Martin gets hammered in Alberta in the next election he'll reconsider his decision.
