From the same news wire, read the captions:
White people:
http://news.yahoo.com/photo/050830/photos_ts_afp/050830071810_shxwaoma_photo1

Black people:
http://news.yahoo.com/photo/050830/480/ladm10208301530

WTF, they're doing the same thing and it's "finding" vs "looting"

Sad.

They're real links. I'm just wondering how long before yahoo! pulls them due to public outrage.

quite funny, but true.. yahoo just grabs the new streams from the news agencies. It's the news agencies that are racist that are owned by the ppl that own the worlds media outlets. Nothing new.

Yahoo just gets their stories from the AP through RSS

Plus these two stories are from different sources. If they were from the same source then I would be saying the same thing.

I think he meant one is from AP (Associated Press) while the other is AFP (some worldwide news source). Yahoo just pulls the stories.

Maybe I'm missing the point. The white couple have backpacks on, which are more than likely personal belongings. The second picture, it looks the kid is carrying a case of pepsi! They probably watched him walk out of the grocery store..

Edit: NM, didn't read the story for the white people.

i would expect the french media (AFP) to be generally less slanted and biased than american one (AP), as is evident here

That's a good point. Both captions are written by different news agencies. It's not as though one person had nothing but good things to say about the white couple, and the same person thought the black kid was a dirty thief. It was written by different people.. and in both cases they are 'looting' technically, though you can't blame anyone for taking groceries.

Interesting. An expectation based in race ... hmmm.

Not really. Yahoo pulls these stories from News "brokers" or agencies where thousands of stories are circulating. Yahoo isn't the source, they are reporting it. Take it easy with the insults. No need to call anyone dumb, because you are just making yourself look dumber.

That's an interesting comment.. France has traditionally been extremely xenophobic, much more so than the US.

Racism ?

Isn't his allegation by the OP more one of ' dicriminatory intent' or perhaps even ' bias ' by the service journalists using these photos instread of saying it is being racist ?

How is a photo of black individual racist or of a white individual with associated text racist ?

Black or white - looting many vary.

Swimming along and coming upon food strewn in front of a store is looting.

Banding together or acting individually to wilfully smash in to a a closed up shop to get at merchandise / food is also looting.

And carrying away non - essentials ( T.V. ) is also another distinction.

Finding ( i.e and keeping a lost allet ) is also stealing.

Unless we know of how many other articles describes a black person ' finding' food and a ' white ' couple looiting food, it's may be premature to establish any pattern or intent based on race behind the reporting based soley on 2 articles.

I agree. Originally I didn't read the caption of the white couple 'taking milk and bread from a grocery store', while the black child was labelled as 'looting a grocery store', then afer I realized that, I didn't realize that the pictures/captions were provided by two different news agencies.

So, if both pictures were provided by the same agency, one labelling the black kid as a looter, and the white couple as just taking necessities, that would certainly be discriminatory, no?

if only that was true

It is true. Even in Canada, you can see it in Quebec. America was founded on multiculturalism, and although racism is still evident in parts of it today, by and large, they are probably one of the most welcoming countries to immigrants in the world.
